BOSTON sports - How did we ever get so (1 Viewer)

"It's unfortunate. Pathetic," Jones said. "What they need to do is instead of kicking people out of the stadium, they need to fine them 10 grand, 20 grand, 30 grand, and then make them pay in full and if they don't, take it out of their check. That's how you hurt somebody. Kicking them out of the stadium, what does that mean? It's a slap on the wrist. The guy needs to be confronted and needs to pay for what he does."

Seems like Mr. Jones has lost a little bit of his financial perspective on the average guy's salary out in the real world.

What was the hope for gain in making it up?
No idea and I readily accepted it as fact when it first came out. However, no fans reported the incident which is strange. Additionally, the only fan I know that has been quoted by name is in the Lupica article and that fan claimed that the beer vendor refused to serve the guy. Only problem with that is that they don't have beer vendors walking the aisles in the bleachers.

I have no doubt there were plenty of racists in the stands that night but I'm definitely questioning if one of them was shouting out racial epithets.

I like to picture the last word that's missing in the thread title as "racist".
As opposed to my Tampa Bay acquaintance who used to fly the stars and bars and someone surprisingly racist again from Tampa. No racists in Florida or Tampa. Sure not.

Tons of racists and dumb hicks in Florida. I'd be the first to tell you.

I assumed it true also but it's not plausible to me that hundreds within earshot would have heard it and not one notified an usher, or come forward as a credible witness to it happening since. Whatever number of racists there are at Fenway are thankfully far outnumbered by bleeding hearts who wouldn't tolerate it, many who would love to have their names in the papers talking about it.

Also makes no sense for a seemingly reasonable guy like Jones to make it up. I guess one of the two has to be true though. Or maybe he thought he heard it but actually didn't. Who the #### knows.

This is true, but I wouldn't judge Tampa by its bad seeds. I think Boston fans like myself are sensitive when it comes to this sort of stuff given the Yawkeys, integration, the bussing problems back in the seventies, etc.

Again, I'm not from Boston, I'm from CT, born and raised, but align myself with the Sox, so it's hard to watch such incidents.

Just a weird thing to read people say "This isn't who we are" but if it weren't who you are, then you wouldn't have that reputation.  Maybe it's not who you want to be.

"During Tuesday night's Red Sox-Orioles game, it was reported to Red Sox security that a racial slur was used in a comment from one fan to another fan. The offending individual was promptly ejected from the ballpark, and has since been notified they are no longer welcome at Fenway Park.

"The Red Sox organization will not tolerate the use of racial slurs at Fenway Park, and we have apologized to those affected. There is no place for racial epithets at Fenway Park, in baseball, or in our society. The Red Sox have turned the matter over to the Boston Police Department, who will further investigate with their civil rights unit and determine whether it merits further action."

The prices to attend a Sox game are not real world.

One step closer for the Celtics...  It won't be easy, in fact it would become one of the greatest underdog stories of all time.  But if there's one town it can happen in, it's this one...

Lonzo Ball just fell into the Lakers lap.  That's who Magic wanted all along.  Though can't lose with either of those 2 picks.  Both teams improve big time.

We've won too much now.  I'm actually sorry.  I remember when winning was this unimaginable thing and losing mattered so much.  I remember the patriots going to a Superbowl and thinking how great it was they got there but obviously they had no chance against the bears.  And they didn't.  Then it happened again against the packers.  And they didn't belong there either, but it was fun getting there.  Then against against the greatest show on turf.  And they didn't belong there either.  But then something totally unexpected happened.  They broke Isaac Bruce's rib early, hit Marshall Faulk so many times he still complains about them, knocked Kurt Warner out of the Rams, turned Mike Martz into a former offensive coordinator and for a minute we were all patriots cheering for our drunk owner.  And that was awesome.

Then the Red Sox lost to the Yankees in the 2003 alcs after the world's longest rendition of God bless America and Sox fans were back to lovable underdogs even though the.  And it seemed the same thing would happen in 2004 when they got down 3-0 against the Yankees and were trailing in game 4.

It's never been the same and probably never will again.

And then Boston completed the 4 sport championship run, with multiples titles in multiple sports.  And it was over.  I didn't need anything more from sports, and I just wanted other people to enjoy what I had.

Yet somehow, after 18-1, spygate, deflategate, the craziest catches yo've ever seen in a Superbowl in 3 straight Superbowl appearances, that win against Seattle might have been the best.  It was so sudden, so cathartic, so much like their last two appearances and so relieving that they survived the miracle catch.  It was awesome. But we couldn't even enjoy it for a week without everything turning to deflate gate. And so it went.

And then 3-28.  Arguably the greatest Superbowl in history.  Cementing Brady as The GOAT.  The #### you Goodell Superbowl.  That was great.

But this victory lap, and the Celtics, and really everything in sports, it's just so unnecessary.  There's no need for it.  There's nothing left to prove.  It's fun to argue that Brady is the best of all time.  There's nobody left to argue with.  It's fun to win as underdogs. Winning as the massive favorite is like watching a movie you've already seen.  There was no drama watching the patriots drub the raiders today.  The most dramatic moment was when gostkowski nailed that 62 yard field goal and it didn't even feel like he might miss it.

So I'm sorry.  I don't want them to lose, but I'm sorry that as long as they're around, so many of my friends from other regions can't win.  I hope raiders fans get a better Superbowl than the Gannon debacle.  I hope lions fans finally win one. I hope Browns fans finally become perennial playoff contenders and get to witness a title.

Honestly I feel guilty rooting for my own teams now. This town is just too great

Seems like sports defines your life a little too much. That's kind of weird/sad.

Also, you know the Raiders have won 3 Super Bowls yes? Also that town is the home of maybe the greatest NBA team ever, who is in the middle of their run.

  I never said I wasn't a sports fan/didn't post here, I just don't wrap my self-worth up in it like you seem to. All good though, whatever keeps you warm at night, who am I to judge

There are a few great thread titles there though. Thanks for reminding me of that Ryan Lochte one :lmao:  I should write some of those down.

You left off maybe the best thing about it from your perspective-it allows Bostonians to convince themselves that everybody hates them due to jealousy of their sports teams and not because they're just a bunch of obnoxious loudmouth racists

Don't forget that we cheat. Get all that salt out there.  When you're inferior, you shouldn't hold back on demonstrating your complex.

I just want to clarify to anyone and everyone that I am NOT a "Boston fan".  I am a Celtics fan due to my crush on Brad Stevens.  I live in Missouri and have never even been to Boston.  And I hate the Patriots and Tom Brady's stupid face.

I will freely admit that a far too large section of Boston fans are raging **** heads with racist tendencies. I would also argue that most teams have a far too large section of raging **** heads with racist tendencies. Degrees and all

I didn't stereotype an entire city, I just noted the well-documented tendencies of its sports fans.

By the way, love the bit where you go fishing and then get upset when fish start flopping around your boat.
Who's mad? I'm trying to be encouraging.  You're doing as good a job as I'd expect.  You've got a lot of potential.  I honestly believe that if you were a winner you'd be good at this.

I dunno, you seem kinda mad.  Not "Boston sports fan after a black hockey player scores a goal against the Bruins in the playoffs" mad, but maybe a little perturbed.

If I'm mad about anything it's that life is too short for all of you to enjoy this level of sustained success.

:lmao:  being on twitter when that happens is what being in Germany in the early 40s must have been like.

It's times such as these that we must look to our most esteemed leaders and philosophers

When you do well, everybody's after you, and sometimes the motives are legitimate, and sometimes it's envy and jealousy.

....but it's still miserable there in the winter and they still let people drive on the shoulder between 4-6.  What happens if your car breaks down?  Also, you can't get good Mexican food there either.
