Box safeties and slot corners after week 1 (1 Viewer)

Tick

Footballguy
Stuff that sticks out from looking at snaps. Numbers are snap percentage / percentage of snaps deep or outside. So 50/20 means they played 50% of snaps and 20% of the snaps they played were deep (safety) or outside (corner). First number is good if high, second is good if low.

I’m guessing that if a guy was >90% of snaps, his team intends to play him all the time. If he’s below 90%, his team is matching their opponent’s formation and it will change weekly. That’s really flawed, because maybe some of the guys above 90 are on teams that were matching a bunch of 3WR sets this week. But I’m making assumptions to jump on guys for the first waiver run.

Slot corners:
ARI G.Williams 100/36
BAL Humphrey 98/11
BUF T.Johnson 67/0 - uh oh
CIN Hill 97/27
IND Moore 94/0
JAC J.Lewis 100/9 - surprise to me!
KCC Conner 99/0
NYG Phillips 84/2
PHI DeJean 100/13
PIT Ramsey 100/19
SEA Witherspoon 100/13
WAS Sainristil 91/15

Not a slot corner:
GBP Nixon 100/93
HOU Pitre 92/0, but he’s a safety
LAR Lake 100/6, but he’s a safety

Looking at my leagues, targets on waivers are Jourdan Lewis, Dax Hill, Dru Phillips, and Garrett Williams

CAR Ransom 14/100 - drop
CIN Battle 100/69 - yuck

SEA love 100/62 - ruh roh
TBB Winfield 97/74 - does it matter?
WAS Martin 100/52 - mid

Nothing on the NE guys. Both Woodson and Hawkins were great on the stat sheet. Looks like Woodson is more the box guy but Hawkins did get a sack and a pick. Both are available on my waivers and I am not sure which one to go after.

Yeah, Woodson 100/52, Hawkins 100/68. I have Woodson on my waiver prelim list but below the box guys.

These are great Tick! So helpful. Thank you.

Battle's boxscore had me assuming otherwise. He was awfully productive to be deep that often.

Minnesota:
Metellus 100/70 yuck!
Jackson 100/82 yucker

Chicago:
Byard 100/66 :-(
Brisker 100/48 deep more than expected
McCloud 82/7 - slot corner, probably matchup based

Love the effort Tick. TY.

McCloud is a backup that played because Kyler Murray popped up on the injury report for Sunday practice then was ruled out. Ask me how I know... o_O

I didn't get to watch the entire Pat's game but I did see Hawkins with a few JAG-esque plays (bad angles, missed tackle, poor ball-in-air awareness) so I'm not sold yet. He did line up everywhere and was flying around. Despite starting Woodson, I didn't even know his jersey number and my viewing was sporadic so I can't comment much.

I should have noticed that - I have Kyler Gordon on 5/6 of my CB-required teams plus 2 more shares in DB leagues.

The Browns had success throwing the ball and couldn't run past the line of scrimmage probably had something to do with it

So I added Watts for K Joseph and Pitre for Jalen Ramsey. Is that good? I kept Lake as my 3rd DB(start 2).
Depends on what other guys were available. Looking at the PFF article posted with box percentage, blitz percentage etc can give a good idea who the better box options should be. Watts seems to be a solid add but if I remember correctly Pitre was a little disappointing on usage and with CGJ there it may limit him somewhat.

I had Pitre as spending a lot of time in the box, but it was actually 34.5% of the time while he was in the slot (I have been tending to combine the two, although that's a really, really rough shorthand measure) about 60% of the time.

I have no idea about future divisions of labor between he and CJGJ. In fact, I added CJGJ and quickly replaced him the next night because both his temperament and his availability are really volatile and I wanted something steadier. I'll bet his deployment reflects his volatility in some way, also, although I cannot prove that and can merely suggest it. But that means I also conclude that now Pitre is volatile also, both in terms of role and participation.

CJGJ always seems to bring that. He brought it to Detroit and Philadelphia. And he talks an awful lot, which I don't particularly care about, but weird **** seems to follow him around.

I watched a good bit of that game last night, Pitre was around the LOS a lot, nearly had 2 sacks while I was watching. Will probably be matchup based, but I like what I saw so far.
Watts didnt do much, but that might be because Minn was so awful.
Makuba and Dax Hill are on my radar, as Q Lake doesnt seem like the same player this year.

This is definitely the challenge of the DB world. Year to year usage/role varies so much that one year a DB is awesome for IDP and the next year they suck. Happens over and over and over again. That's why it's hard to put any capital into DB's and just play for the flavor of the year (as there are always top 10-15 guys on waivers every year).

also interested. I'd love to see how the CB/S info shakes out over a few weeks. I don't really have the time to go through gamebooks anymore.

We've turned a bit if a corner, at corner. I've invested in the position, grabbing up the Alonte Taylor's, Dru Phillips, Daxton Hill, etc. I don't think I'm going to be shuffling guys in and out, like I have in the past, barring injuries.

Anyone know anything about Dane Belton in NYG or Tony Jefferson in LAC? They're both sitting on waivers and I could use a S to pick up. They both have scored decent. When I look for snap counts for Belton it appears he's only getting about 25% (must be making plays when on the field). Jefferson was just activated last week and played 60 snaps and scored well. But LAC had three safety's with 60+ snaps. Is that gonna be an ongoing thing? Either worth picking up?

Who else is available? I wouldn’t roster those guys in my leagues but there are deeper leagues out there.

Yes, the slot/box guys are changing the CB position. It’s weird to see which are called S and which are called CB.

I would echo this sentiment. In a vacuum not worth rostering but without knowing your options it's tough to give a complete answer.

This is a 16 tm dynasty with IDP and very deep rosters (40+) so there's not much available. The ones available are Belton, Jefferson, Hickman (CLE), Taylor-Demerson (ARI), and McCollough (LAR). With injuries to my safeties, I'm a little concerned and trying to find a nugget on waivers.

If it is a DB league you would be better off grabbing the corners @massraider mentions. I have been doing the same in my DB leagues - some of these corners are way more reliable scoring now and are certainly a better option than a deep dredge in a shallow S pool.

Yeah, unfortunately my CB's are all dinged too. My luck. Unfortunately, we have to start CB AND S. I'm always able to find CB since they are more abundant on the WW. Just a challenge trying to find a S at this time. However, LAC just signed Jefferson to the active roster again (rewarding him for his solid performance last week). I'll probably pick up Jefferson and hope he gets at least 50% of the snaps, weather it be at S or NB.

This might be slightly off-topic, but does anybody have any insight as to which JAC CB is the one to own between Lewis and Campbell? Both have scored well through three weeks and Lewis is listed as the nickel. Is there one to target over the other long-term (ROS) or is it too matchup-dependent to say either way?

Yeah, I'm quoting myself but apparently he had problems in Houston and they released him today. This dude is just weird and stuff follows him everywhere.

Oh my word. I know this is a more serious forum and thread, but you've got to check this out.

Code:
Player Total defensive snap share Blitz rate Box snap % Slot snap% Wide Corner % Targets faced
Jourdan Lewis 100.0% 1.6% 9.5% 65.1% 23.8% 8
Tyson Campbell 96.8% 0.0% 1.6% 0.0% 98.4% 7

Lewis for me by a wide margin - he's only wide 24% of the time.

Thoughts on Jeremy Reeves stepping in for Will Harris at safety in Washington? Looks like he played close to 90% of his 46 snaps in the box.

They signed Darnell Savage today if I'm not mistaken.
Assuming Reeves will get a week or two to prove himself while Savage gets acclimated.

I have to laugh. Bro, you're going to have to scour that for yourself. I don't know what they're planning on with Reaves. If you got the computer and the access . . .

I think your logic is pretty good. I know I'm the idiot that didn't subscribe to PFF and used a second-hand box safety report and wound up with Quan Martin in my lineup last week. Guess what? He's a free safety. LOL.

But you'll really have to just look at the information coming across your screens. I know waivers run tonight for most leagues. Good luck!

CJGJ getting cut by HOU has to be a huge gain for Pitre. IIRC, Pitre had his great season as a starting safety that moved to nickel CB on passing downs.

If nothing else it will settle everything down. Apparently he was blowing assignments and leaving guys hanging out to dry. I don't want to go too overboard about it, but I sorta watched it the past few years because I stream DBs and he just screws everything up with his clubs. And after I was done with teams he was around (this was Detroit and I rostered Tracy Walker at the time and I just vaguely remember thinking that "this cat isn't right" and he sorta messed up Walker's playing time or something like that and I noticed) I began to hear the weird Philly rumors and oh man I just started reading about them and watching his interviews and stuff . . . what a waste of time. Houston, what were you thinking?

Oh my word. I know this is a more serious forum and thread, but you've got to check this out.

Size matters.

Dear word. I watched him sit with a sympathetic audience and give an interview. It wasn't awful. Like, I don't hate the guy. But he's kinda cooked. I think social media is not for everybody and I think both he and the public sort of take it seriously and then not seriously enough for each other, if that makes sense. It was weird and sad. But it definitely does what I thought. He clearly brings it on the field or it prevents him from being prepared and concentrating on a goal.

Oh well. Just a hunch I had and I figured I'd post after I opened the can of worms.

Waivers ran last night. I picked up a Ransom. I hope he starts to take over and get more than 58% of the team's defensive snaps. I don't have much in the way of FAAB left. I probably should have gone with Jaylen Watson, the Chiefs' cornerback (it's a CB-required leeg) or maybe Tarheeb Still, but that would be too wise. I'd rather chase the ephemeral nature of last week's perfection. Heh. Thus it is.

Tarheeb Still seems like a good one - just looking at the PFF snaps, it looks like he maybe plays the slot when there are 3 WRs and plays wide for 2 WRs. That's a pretty great role too.
