HONESDALE, Pa. (AP) Authorities say a 10-year-old boy charged with fatally beating a 90-year-old woman told a Pennsylvania state trooper he was "only trying to hurt her."

But an arrest affidavit says the boy also said, "I killed that lady."

A bail hearing was scheduled Wednesday for the boy, who is charged as an adult with criminal homicide. His lawyer wants him released into his father's custody.

The beating occurred Saturday at the home of the boy's grandfather, who had been caring for the woman, Helen Novak.

According to the boy's mother, her son said he lost his temper when he went into the woman's room to ask her a question and she yelled at him. Police said he admitted punching her in the throat and stomach.

During an interview with a trooper, he said he "pulled Novak down on the bed and held the cane on her throat and then punched her numerous times."He also told police that he "was only trying to hurt her."

A 10yo? At that age children can be at vastly different levels of maturity. We dont know anything about this kids home life. He may have been severely abused. He is certainly very mentally ill.

Cant just start electrocuting children til we know the entire story. He needs years of intensive treatment but may have a chance to lead a normal life in the future.

I think you are beingna little hasty throwing around the capital punishment. If he were 13-14 I would probably agree with you, but he is ten.

I'm usually an advocate of trying kids who are in their upper teens as adults...Especially in instances of violence and general disregard of authority, but I agree....I can't think of a scenario where I'd be OK with a 10 y/o being tried as an adult.

in some countries/cultures parents have some official culpability for the crimes of their offspring. With a child as young as this, it seems like something worth considering as a society. A 10 year old that is so out of control as to choke and strike a 90 year old woman seems like an indicator that there is something very wrong in that child's home. If that is the case, then those who helped create a monster should face some consequences IMHO.

I think it's best if we have laws in place before charging people for what some perceive as crimes. Just out of curiosity, suppose the boy is out of control, has only mom at home and this happens. The mom has tried but can't control him and the dad isn't around. You think the mom should go to prison and the lowlife "dad" is free to continue to spread his seed amongst more lady friends?
