Tom Brady is playing up the Patriots as an underdog this week as they prepare for the AFC Championship Game in Denver. Despite beating the Broncos in Week 12, New England has opened as a five-point underdog for Sunday. And Brady said in an interview on the “Dennis & Callahan” show on WEEI in Boston on Monday that it was the right role for his team.

“I know when we played Baltimore no one picked us to win and no one’s gonna pick us to win this week,” Brady said. “We’ve had our backs against the wall for a while, really the whole season. We’ve lost players and teams have really counted us out. We’ve got a bunch of underdogs on our team and we’ll be underdogs again. We’ll see how that shakes out at the end of the week.”
Poor Tommy. Nobody ever believes in his team.

:sadbanana:
This is the first game since 2006 that the Pats have been underdogs, according to ESPN.

Poor Tom Brady. :violin:
Is that playoffs as a whole? Just in AFC championship games?

any game, regular season and playoffs included. It seems difficult to beleive at first glance but the more I think about it - it makes some sense. That may have been the last time the Pats had a road playoff game and in the regular season they've been a 12-14 wi team year in and year out.

Wow, that is hard to believe and really impressive if true.

This might surprise a few people, but I'm picking Manning and the Broncos in a blowout. Pats are not in the same league as the Broncos right now. Pats won a lot of squeakers this year, they are not that good on the road, and the weather is not going to be a factor.

I think it'd be hilarious if Peyton came out today and said the exact same thing about the Broncos. A little gamesmanship like that would be fun.

I don't bet on games so don't really follow point spread closely. Denver was favored on the road against NE? Well then I guess it's wrong.

Considering their division, a string of home playoff games and their dominance over that time, it didn't seem that far fetched. But obviously I interpreted the stat incorrectly.

That's not true either. The Patriots were slight underdogs to the Giants in the Super Bowl just two years ago.

Do you think any NFL team in history has been a favorite in 100 consecutive games?

just adding that I'm not trying to bag on you, just the idea that is insane.

As a fan I think BB is still in Mannings head, and Peyton is going to overthink every decision. The Broncos D will have no answer for Blount, Ridley and Vereen. Brady completels 30 of 35 passes with 3 TD's, and the Pats win easily, 42-21.

I think the real outcome will be a three point win, which can easily go either way.

Since 2005, in nine games against the Patriots, Peyton's offense has averaged 29 points per game, with him throwing 22 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. I think Belichick was in his head a bit early in his career, but not anymore. Peyton broke through in the mid 00s, and since then, he has probably been more in Belichick's head than the other way around.

yeah that time Bill went for it at his own 30 was something else

Peyton has been good vs BB at home, seems like they always played in Foxboro though.

No. That's why I said it seemed difficult to beleive it when I heard it on the radio this morning.

The reason I could beleive it though was that the Pats haven't played a road playoff game since then and always seemed to play at home when they played top teams like Indy/Denver, SF, etc.

But yes, it was naive of me to actually consider it possible.

I wonder what the consecutive favorite streak is? I wouldn't be surprised if it was the Pats, but it could have been the Steelers or Dolphins during their runs.

I think a better statement is that the Pats have not been as good on the road as they have been at home. They went 4-4 on the road this year, but two of the games ended with controversial calls. Even so, they lost their 4 road games by a combined 18 points and they were all one possession games with a chance to win in the last two minutes.

In the past 4 seasons, they have gone 22-10 (.688) on the road. I would guess that that is best in the league over that time. They lost those 10 games by 7, 3, 4, 4, 1, 1, 3, 8, 14, and 20. They haven't had a loss on the road by more than one possession since 2010. They outscored their opponents by a count of 996-671 with a 72 to 30 turnover advantage.

All that is mostly meaningless as historical stats don't win games and the current NE team has mostly different personnel on it at this point.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/14/both-teams-have-changed-since-broncos-patriots-last-met/

Less than two months have passed since the Broncos and Patriots met in a wild regular-season game New England. But as the two teams prepare to face off again on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game, there are significant differences on both teams. Here are some of the major changes on both teams since the Broncos and Patriots met on November 24:

– Broncos linebacker Von Miller had his best game of the season in that November meeting, scoring the game’s first touchdown on a 60-yard fumble return and adding two sacks and two tackles for loss. Miller is now on injured reserve.

– The Broncos’ secondary has undergone significant changes. Chris Harris was the Broncos’ best defensive back at the time of that previous game in New England, but Harris suffered a torn ACL on Sunday against the Chargers. In that first game, the Patriots’ passing game really picked up after Broncos cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie left with an injury at halftime, but Rodgers-Cromartie is healthy now. Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey didn’t play in November but will play on Sunday.

– The Broncos’ defensive line is also very different. Broncos defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson had a sack and a tackle for loss in the November game, and he hit Tom Brady as he was passing twice. Vickerson is now on injured reserve. Derek Wolfewas a starter on the Broncos’ defensive line in the November game but hasn’t played since then after suffering seizure symptoms on November 29.

– Broncos tight end Julius Thomas was injured and didn’t play in November, and backup tight end Jacob Tamme was Denver’s leading receiver in that game. Now that Thomas is healthy, he’ll be one of Peyton Manning’s top targets, and Tamme will likely be a non-factor.

Rob Gronkowski was a huge part of the Patriots’ offense, with seven catches for 90 yards and a touchdown against the Broncos. Gronkowski is now on injured reserve.

– Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount barely played, with just two touches. Blount has recently emerged as the focal point of the Patriots’ offense, with 48 carries for 355 yards and six touchdowns in the Patriots’ last two games. The flip side of Blount’s emergence is that Brandon Bolden, who was the Patriots’ leading rusher in the November game against the Broncos, is now a non-factor.

– Patriots safety Steve Gregory didn’t missed the November meeting with a finger injury. He’s healthy and starting now.

– Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes had nine total tackles and recovered a fumble against the Broncos. He’s now on injured reserve.

– Patriots defensive tackle Sealver Siliga is now a starter but was inactive when the Patriots played the Broncos.

– On special teams, Patriots punter Ryan Allen is hurt and might be unavailable on Sunday. The Patriots had Devin McCourty returning kickoffs against the Broncos in the regular season but have now turned those responsibilities over to Blount. The Broncos had Wes Welker on punt returns against the Patriots but this time will have either Trindon Holliday or Eric Decker returning punts.

Do all these changes add up to an advantage for the Broncos or the Patriots? We’ll find that out on Sunday. But we know for sure that these two teams are very different than they were in November.

Whew! Thanks for clearing that up.

We all thought that Manning was going to play nickel corner against Brady.

Brady is such a whiner, oh poor tom
This is why he tops the "most hated" lists. 3 superbowl rings. Plays in a division with 3 disfunctional teams. Supermodel wife. Enough money to pay off the national debt. Still seems pissy half the time.
Maybe he is frustrated with going almost a decade now without winning a ring, after winning three in his first four years as a starter.

Consider that the last time Brady and Belichick won a Super Bowl, Rudi Johnson was a 1,400-yard rusher for the Bengals, Mushin Muhammad led the league in receiving yards, and Drew Brees was still a Charger.

Yeah I am sure Brady is pissy because he doesn't win the Super Bowl every year, must be Manning's problem too, solid logic there chief.

I think the challenge for Manning over the years is that his teams just don't really have special game plans on offense. They "do what they do" and rely on Peyton to make the correct read at the line.

Whereas the Patriots and BB, do gameplan for Manning and give him different looks.

So effectively Manning has to adjust on the fly whereas the Patriots kind of know what to expect at kickoff.

Sometimes Manning guesses wrong and that's what has hurt him over time.

3 shady SB wins...A decade of losing in the playoffs...2 SB losses to a sub-par quarterback...crying on national TV for being a 6th round pick...

Seems more like reasons to mock than to hate. Just my opinion though.

And the Denver defense is dinged up big time, they are worse than when they faced them earlier in the year. Tom Brady should be able to light it up. I expect play action to be his friend after last week's run fest and hype that Ne is now a running team that I do not buy.

Can Manning pass up and down the field vs Ne, if he cannot they will lose. I do not expect the Denver D to contain Brady.

This post makes no sense.
Then why did you post it?
Yeah, that's probably the approach I would have taken in your position.
I'm sorry. Were those your Cheerios I pissed in this morning?
I don't eat cereal. You post was dumb and it made no sense. Don't act like it's the first time someone's told you that.
You mad Bro?
I think so. :(

Brady is such a whiner, oh poor tom
This is why he tops the "most hated" lists. 3 superbowl rings. Plays in a division with 3 disfunctional teams. Supermodel wife. Enough money to pay off the national debt. Still seems pissy half the time.
3 shady SB wins...A decade of losing in the playoffs...2 SB losses to a sub-par quarterback...crying on national TV for being a 6th round pick...

Seems more like reasons to mock than to hate. Just my opinion though.
 I love seeing grown men get so wrapped up in hating on Brady

Tom Brady is playing up the Patriots as an underdog this week as they prepare for the AFC Championship Game in Denver. Despite beating the Broncos in Week 12, New England has opened as a five-point underdog for Sunday. And Brady said in an interview on the Dennis & Callahan show on WEEI in Boston on Monday that it was the right role for his team.

I know when we played Baltimore no one picked us to win and no ones gonna pick us to win this week, Brady said. Weve had our backs against the wall for a while, really the whole season. Weve lost players and teams have really counted us out. Weve got a bunch of underdogs on our team and well be underdogs again. Well see how that shakes out at the end of the week.

It's just playoffs, they were underdogs in the regular season multiple times this year...atleast against Denver and Carolina, I believe.
That's not true either. The Patriots were slight underdogs to the Giants in the Super Bowl just two years ago.
The Patriots were slight favorites in that game, not underdogs.
That is correct. I misremembered. So yeah, this is the first time since 2006 that the Patriots have been the underdog in a PLAYOFF GAME. They were underdogs in four games this past season alone (ATL, Carolina, Denver, and Baltimore).

So I'm not sure if anyone actually remembers the first half of the week 12 matchup.

-The Patriots elected to kick and shut down the broncos on their first drive quite handily, three and out.

-The Pats first possession the moved up the field just fine, averaging 5-6 yards per play -- until Ridley coughs up the ball and Von Miller returns it 60 yards for a touchdown.

-Broncos kickoff and on the first or second play of the drive Von Miller gets a pretty good sack on Brady, dislodging the ball which is recovered and returned to the 10 yard line. Moreno runs the ball twice for touchdown #2.
-Broncos kickoff and again on the first set of downs, Legarrette Blount coughs up the ball... recovered by the Broncos.
-The Broncos proceed to run the ball 8 times before kicking a field goal.

This was all in the first quarter.

Pats scored on every drive but one in the second half.

With Gronk in the lineup.

This is a big challenge for the Pats this time around. They can win it though. Run the ball.

Three keys for the Pats:

*O-line...this is the key to the run game...the RBs get the notoriety but it's guys like Mankins that were the unsung heroes of the Colts win...also, it's been pretty obvious for years now but the key to beating the Pats is getting pressure on Brady...with no Von Miller (and Chris Harris in the secondary) how the Broncos generate pressure will be extremely important...

*Jamie Collins...the kid is finding his groove in a big way...gotta assume he will be matched-up with Julius Thomas a good portion of the day and that match-up could go along way towards who wins this game...

*Chandler Jones...he's a big time player and he needs to be in the Denver backfield all day disrupting Manning if they are gonna slow down this offense...if the Pats win I have a gut feeling he will be one of the main reasons...

it was a bizarre game. like the ball had a slippery substance on it.

weather isnt looking like a factor, injuries on both sides have mounted up especially on defense. I dont belive Julius thomas played in the first game, Gronk did
