Brandon Belt (1 Viewer)

Big 'N Tasty

Footballguy
Is he worthy of a pickup? 5x5 head to head. I'd be dropping Brantley, Damon, or Brian Roberts FWIW.

Help me out...I don't know anything about this guy or the Giants, so is he going to be starting right away? hitting something like .377 with a .992 OPS in the minors this year.

Belt has a lot of upside....BUT he is a rookie - I doubt you want to drop Damon or Brantley for him because they are everyday players.....it's not clear whether Belt will play every day or even where....Roberts otoh is on the DL and weeks away, so if that is a hole in your lineup, sure. If you have Roberts on reserve do you need his SB if/when he comes back more than a little more power from Belt? and then who does Belt replace in the lineup?

Belt struggled in his April MLB appearance but has nothing to prove in AAA. The problem with him is where he gets the ABs in the Giants' crowded OF/1B situation.

I wouldn't drop any of the guys you mentioned unless you have a load of SB guys elsewhere in your lineup.

I don't think I need Roberts' stolen bases. Belt would be replacing one of the players I platoon in my UTIL spot. Damon, Brantley, or Dunn. Thanks for the answers, Eephus too.

If you have a team that is looking like a top team 3 I'd rather have Damon. If your team is middle of the pack wor worse I'd rather have Belt. I'd rather have Belt in a keeper formats.

Guy should turn out to be a pretty good player down the road, but he looked way over matched in his first stint with the Giants earlier this season.

If you just look at his slash line, you'd say Belt was overmatched. But I think that's a case where the numbers oversimplify. I'm not saying he was great or even good, but a .237 BABIP in a very short 60 PA sample didn't help him at all. If you watched him every day, he had some very nice looking ABs that ended up as outs. He has a very good eye, almost to the point of being too unaggressive. When the results weren't there early, it looked like he started pressing which accelerated the death spiral.I still wouldn't pick him up in a redraft league because of the playing time questions but I expect a lot better than a .569 OPS & .077 ISO this time around.

Yeah, overmatched certainly wouldn't be the word I'd use to describe his April stint. A little bad luck and a little too passive at times sounds more correct. He has a great approach at the plate, for a young hitter, and he has plenty of talent to put up numbers. The ability to work the count and draw some walks is a skill that it seems like it can take young hitters forever to develop and Belt seemed well on his way before. He hit the ball well (again) in AAA and it's a different situation than before so hopefully that confidence will carry over for better results.

Huh? I would. I still think he has value and you never know. Guys like Michael Morse are being scooped up in most leagues. Every year rookies come up in May/June and produce.

I expect him to get a lot of run. I don't think the Giants would bring him up to come off the bench. They would be better off keeping him in the minors if that was the case.

Not sure how he'll do numbers wise. If you have space for him I think he is worth a flyer. Hold him for 2-3 weeks if it looks like he has worked out the MLB jitters you can keep him. If he is still figuring out MLB pithing maybe you go a different direction.

I do thin Posey being out for the season will hurt Belt's production.

I guess we'll know a lot more after the weekend. The Giants have a lot of 1B/OF options. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if Belt is the guy who goes down when Sandoval returns in June.

:goodposting: although it may well depend on how well the team hangs in the standings in the three weeks before Sandoval is back.....if they are not contending, why not get Belt some valuable experience....there is no future for Burrell. They might also try and trade for a catcher better than Whiteside - rumor that Pudge might be available and a guy that experienced and knowledgable might help for the short term - if they don't have to give up much to get him I could see that happening.

Pretty funny that every report about Belt's call-up includes the phrase "the team didn't call him up to sit on the bench". Did any of the fantasy news outlets consult the Giants about that?

Frustrating as it may be as a Belt owner, I can understand the dilemma. Assuming they need Rowand/Torres in center, that leaves only Burrell, Ross, and Huff as guys to lose ABs to Belt. As uninspiring as those guys are, they are veteran hitters that can really help this team if they get hot. Belt's likely production for this season isn't too different from what these guys have already done (in recent seasons).

A trade would make sense, but it's not as if the Giants are a team that can afford to go trading away guys who can hit 20 HRs.

This looks like it'll just be a really disappointing season for anyone wanting to see Belt get consistent ABs.
