Brandon Gorin traded to New England (1 Viewer)

The Cardinals have acquired OT Brandon Gorin from the Patriots for a conditional pick, and will plug Gorin into the RT position in place of the injured Oliver Ross.

While I can understand Arizona's willingness to do this deal, how can New England afford this move? Gorin started almost half of the Patriot's games the last two years and according to the team website, this leaves rookie Ryan O'Callaghan as the starter with only Wesley Britt as a backup at RT.

Why would the Patriots move a starter like Gorin for a late round pick? Just having trouble understanding the motive here. Even if O'Callaghan had been lights out in training camp, Gorin would be invaluable as a backup. This is the second decent OLineman the Pats have dished out for almost nothing in return. Pats homers, is this just an indication that they are loving what they see of younger guys like Kaczur and O'Callaghan?

Light

Mankins

Koppen

Neal

Kazcur

Hochstein

OC

Those are the Pats big 7 right now. They're all young and outside of Koppen are signed long term. After that you have guys like Stevenson, Yates and a bunch of others fighting it out to make the team. One area where the Pats have been very successful under BB and Dante Scarnecchia is developing young O lineman. They have a knack for developing no names (Andruzzi is the model for this) or digging guys up in the daft like Light or Mankins that they have ranked higher than anyone else. That's one reason you can't really look at their O line names and totally know what they're up to. My guess is there a few other no names who they are happy with and this made Gorin expendable.

As for OC there have been some pretty glowing articles about him lately and this deal would seem to indicate they weren't BSing. As of right now he would appear to be penciled in as the starter. With Kazcur banged up (his status has been somewhat of a mystery) dealing Gorin would seem to indicate they are happy with another prospect or two as far as backups are concerned.

Gordon traded TO NE? Huh?

I'd say it indicates that Kaczur is close to coming back and will be the starting RT. In addition, they feel that O'Cal is good enough to backup at RT.

IMO, Gorin was a marginal starter at best. He was semi-capable at RT, but when pressed into duty at LT he was abhorrent.

As opposed to Kaczur who was able to hold down LT as a rookie. BB values versatility on the line, and if a guy can only play one position like Gorin, he is not nearly as valuable as others.

So this could mean that not only do they like O'Cal better at RT, but perceive that he could serve as the 3rd string LT as well, a role Gorin was unable to do with success.

Agreed about the versatlity. Gorin got eaten up at LT. Hopefully you're right about Kazcur. He's been MIA for all of camp and he needs to get back ASAP if he's going to start on opening day. I have to believe they are comfortable with OC starting the season with the Gorin move though.
