Brandon Marshall... *decent* WR2 at best. (1 Viewer)

Brandon Marshall is not a WR1 and it's not close. For homers and his year-long owners, what's your outlook moving forward? Is he going to bounce back or is this his reality? This was a good matchup for him and there was a lot of time where Miami was down.

I couldn't watch... What gives?

He is been a huge disappointment, no doubt. Don't think he will produce like a # 1 on that offense.

He gets a decent number of targets week in and week out. But he doesn't get enough touchdowns. Still, I can't complain. The problem is there just aren't too many wide receivers you can count on this year. It's really been a crapshoot, and Marshall has as good a chance as anyone else to explode in one of the playoff weeks, when it will matter the most.

I traded for him (Torain and Mike Williams of Seattle) before last week, thinking I was getting high-upside WR2 (already have Roddy White). But I want to start Steve Johnson over him. He's just brutal.

Based on research, I blamed much of his poor first half on the insane schedule and the large number of top 10 defenses. I guess he and Henne don't connect regardless of the matchup for the most part...

That was my thinking - those playoff matchups. But at this point, I'll go with Roddy White and Austin Collie over him and it'll be hard to start him over Stevey Johnson at the flex. That wasn't supposed to happen... but that's reality I guess. And with Collie's concussion I'll be forced to keep starting him and his 6 YPC.

He was on pace for over 100 receptions and 1300 yards prior to today's game (I don't know what those numbers are now). Henne isn't playing particularly well right now, but the TDs will come eventually.

:lmao: TDs are the least predictable statistic, especially for WRs. He is getting looks and making catches. I am very happy with him in PPR.

You got to be kidding. He's been terrible if you drafted him to be a #1 receiver.

Exactly. There have been 219 player seasons with 1200+ receiving yards in NFL history (Marshall is on pace for 1236 after today's game) and only 2 of them finished with fewer than 4 TDs. Marshall's low TD total up to this point has to be disappointing for owners, but at the same time it shouldn't be a significant concern moving forward.

I'm hoping like crazy that Marshall gets to 1,200 yards like the rest of you. More than anything, I'm just hoping he can get more than 10 fantasy points for me in a .5 PPR, which he's only done twice.

We're talking about 2 games (out of 8) with more than 71 yards. 3 out of 8 with more than 5 receptions. 1 games with a TD. That's mediocre for a WR2.

I'm just trying to find out if anyone that follows Miami or watches the games has more hope or more insight. The stats never tell the whole story for those of us that can't watch the games...

Henne looks to have really regressed the last two weeks. He had favorable matchups in both games and failed to throw a touchdown pass. He is really struggling in the Red Zone. His missed TD to Fasano today looked like a pass a grade schooler would throw. It was awful. The playoff schedule is nice for the Dolphins but unless Henne steps his game up significantly it may not matter.

I think it's a combination of a number of things. At the start of the season Henne was burning a hole through Marshall. Teams adjusted. Other WR's stepped up and Marshall isn't the only option on offense anymore. This has eaten some of his targets and soft stats from underneath stuff. In addition, teams are bracketing him. Today Reed spent the day over the top. The lack of TD's are a product of Miami being horrible in the RZ. I think he is a great buy low in so far as he'll get his receptions and his yards for the most part. The TD's probably not so much unless Henne really improves.

Thanks for the game summary, packersfan. Also:

My main hope is that Bess and Hartline are so involved, Henne starts to revisit the importance of getting the ball to his playmaker supreme. They need TDs, after all. And why Marshall isn't being targeted more in the RZ is beyond me when he's a 6'4 freak. I remember seeing a stat that basically indicated Marshall is barely getting RZ looks. That baffles me. Of course this is all self-serving as a Marshall owner, but it's the Calvin Johnson rule. Just get the targets to these guys in situations where they can make a great play. That's the advantage of having these guys.

Exactly. Add 5-6 TD's and he is a stud same goes for Colston...lack of TD's is killing a lot of really good WR's this season. That's FF. Unpredictable.

What about the lack of yards though, too? That's my concern. More than 71 yards only twice all season? The 53, 71, 166, 50, 127, 57, 64, 30 is what scares me. He's trending downwards and I just get the feeling that a return to 100+ would be more of a fluke than another 30 yards receiving performance. What's the feeling from a Miami fan - is it better or worse than the statistics portend?

Better imo. This is Henne and the offense. When Miami dedicates itself to getting Marshall the ball they get him the ball. I've seen a few games with 10-12 targets in one half and then nada in the 2nd. I think this will work itself out.

Thanks for the take. like the sound of Marshall here:

The Palm Beach Post confirms that Brandon Marshall faced double teams on virtually every passing down in Week 9.

Marshall had just five catches for 30 yards yesterday and hasn't topped 64 yards since Week 6. Predictably, he's not happy about it. "This is my first year here and coach Henning and coach Sparano's formula for winning might be a little different than where I come from," said Marshall. "I'm fine with that, but it becomes a problem when we're losing." Before you bail on Marshall, note that he gets the Bills and Lions at home in Weeks 15 and 16.

When you're not getting your stud WR the ball AND you're not winning/not scoring TDs, it's time to revisit what you're doing with that new Ferrari you're leaving parked in the garage. Hopefully the "squeaking wheel" helps.

I watch all the Dolphin games...the main issue is that nobody on the Dolphins stretches the field and because if that coverage is tight. Marshall is not a quick cutter or blazing fast guy, he is kind of like a Fitzgerald. Teams try and take him out because Bess is a decent #3 slot guy, but the Dolphins don't have a 2, a TE threat or even much of a weapon out of the backfield. Normally Ronnie catches pretty well, but he isn't explosive out of the backfield. On top of that Henne has been mediocre; but partly because of the receivers not being very open. Yes, he missed the TD to Fasano, but the ball just came out of his hand bad (slipped?). He is an OK QB with some upside, but until the Dolphins get a deep threat you will see a season like Marshall has had thus far with a few more TD's sprinkled in.

The Dolphis dont throw deep and Henne does not throw into double coverage much. limits the Beast. You cant hit a WR on every play BUT you need to feed your top WR's if you want to win and let them make a play. They need to Feed the Beast.

Teams are quite content to let Henne check down to Bess all day. Miami had a brutal schedule this year, on paper. I thought Marshall was a gamble at his draft position..... New team with a brutal schedule.. Revis Island twice, Henne at QB. Two headed running tandem with a coach who likes to pound it and play defense. Lots of red flags there on Marshall.

I agree - I would let Henne check down as well I suppose. I though the running game would be far better, too. I just bought Marshall last week since the 2nd half looks great (again, on paper) aside from week 14: 10: TEN (7) <-- DST rank vs. WR position11: CHI (3)12: @OAK (6)13: CLE (28)14: @NYJ (25)15: BUF (21)16: DET (13)I guess we'll just see. Miami is only 2 games back, spend nearly the entire 2nd half at home or in warm weather, and face some weak passing defenses. Still, something has to change in the offensive approach.

Do you actually follow the team or watch Marshall? Because if you do then why would you pat yourself on the back for the "Revis Island" concern? Against NYJ Marshall had one of his best games: 10 for 166 and 1 TD. Revis island has been hurt and is not the same.

Marshall has never been a big TD scorer. From '07-'09, he had 23 touchdown catches, which is a little less than 8 per year. Not stud-worthy, and he is now playing with a QB who is not nearly as good as the guys he had those years (Cutler and Orton), so I am not surprised that he isn't scoring. He is still on pace for over 100 catches and 1,200 yards.

That aside, I did think he was overvalued this year, so he is on none of my teams (because he went way before I would have taken him in every single draft).

I was explaining my thought process BEFORE the season started. I just thought BM had more red flags on paper than other WRs around the same draft position. His performance overall doesn't seem all that surprising so far. He's great, but the situation seemed less than stellar for someone you would want to be your WR1.

how many times did cutler throw the ball in denver?how often did you expect miami to throw?
The targets are actually fine - 3rd in the NFL (87), 4th in NFL in receptions (52). The problem is that the targets are never in the red zone and never for more than 6 yards it seems....

Shoot I got offered him for TB Mike Willaims. Im kind of torn. I really like WIlliams plus its a dynasty league

Revis didn't even play that week. Cromartie matched up on Marshall and actually covered him very well - but Marshall just looked like a beats that game.

I just traded for him in a .5 ppr.

I gave: Thomas Jones, Lee Evans and James Jones. (all bench players)

for B Marshall.

In another .5 PPR with no flex, I got offered B Marshall for my Jahvid Best.

The new question, how do things change now with Pennington at the helm? I think benefits Marshall assuming Pennington can regain his accuracy since the deep ball certainly won't be there.

After watching today's game and Marshall and Henne's body language and interaction I'm fairly certain Henne was purposely avoiding Marshall the last two weeks. With T. Thigpen at the helm I'm expecting a big game Thursday.

What a bust of a pick. I'm so glad traded this waste of space, so he can go and be somebody elses problem.

Bingo. Henne simply was never going to bring it for Marshall. I'm hopefull for Thigpen, who really resurrected Bowe two years back in KC. Different system, but he's a guy that seems to take more risks. I was happy about Pennington too (ANY change), but I'll take this scenario. Marshall will be on the bench though for sure. Gotta see the connection before I trust it again...

Dynasty league?
3 keeper
I wouldn't cut bait after 9 games. This is a super stud we are talking about.

Something happened above and beyond the double/triple coverage. When the season started Marshall had 3 games w/ 13+ targets. Today it bubbled over when Henne came into the game. Marshall looked disinterested and threw a tantrum.

Marshall will be fine.

Henne is done in Miami being a starter. We must find a franchise QB. It has eluded us since the year 2000 (Our first without Marino)

He's killing my season. Very worried about his prospects over the next couple of years in Dynasty. Was shooting for Roddy with my WR1 pick and he was snatched up right before my pick in the draft. Oh what could have been!

Putting on street clothes with a hammy strain and sitting on the sidelines the whole second half tells me he won't play again for quite awhile. He was already pissed about the way he was being used. Wouldn't be surprising if he milks this injury all the way through the end of the season.

Wasn't worth squat even when he was healthy. Might be cuttable in redrafts if he is ruled out early this week.

He was on his way to a decent game before he got hurt... sucks
He was? :) You get points for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties?
He had 3 catches for 41 yards in less than one half. They had a 1st down at mid field with about 1:30 left in the half, in a game they trailed in the entire time. The opportunity was certainly there for him to have at least a decent game if he didn't get hurt.
