Bread makers (1 Viewer)

I'm looking at buying a bread maker but have no idea where to start so I'm reaching out to the FFA as there seems to be an expert on every topic here.

I was looking at THIS ONE on Amazon but other than the reviews, have no idea how to tell a good machine from a bad one.  Does anyone have any experience with a good bread maker?  Is there a particular brand that shines above the rest?  I'd like to keep it under $200 if possible but could be talked into spending more if $200 is going to have me end up with a garbage product.

Thanks in advance!

Go on craigslist or something.  Get a breadmaker from someone that got it as a wedding gift and never used it.   Take it home, make bread twice and sell it on craigslist after it collects dust for 6 months.

Has anyone seen the mixes for bread-machines recently? I went looking a month or two ago and didn't see them.

Check out the website for America's Test Kitchen (AKA Cook's Country).  They do thorough tests and reviews of a lot of kitchen equipment.  I think they have tested and reviewed bread makers.

Dont need a breadmaker, bro.

Get yourself a nice castiron pot, and make some delicious boule the real way, and it honestly takes barely any more effort than a breadmaker.

And for sandwhich bread, all you need is a loaf pan.

Got perfect recipes for all this stuff

I can attest. Soulfly hooked me up with a recipe and it turned out pretty great.

Yard sale season is coming up too. There's a breadmaker at every one. And you don't even need to get there early to secure it. It'll still be there at 3:00PM.

Can you post some of the recipes?

Sure, which you looking for?

They're from my wife's baking/travel blog... I have the links saved on my comp, but Ill be home soon.

I know it sounds "lame", but the sandwhich bread is so damn good. it's smaller than, say, a wonderloaf bread, but it just tastes GOOD.

They're all about the same. Get one that is easy to clean.

We mainly used ours for pizza dough until it finally broke. Now we just make pizza dough in the kitchen aid mixer

We have this one Zojirushi Bread Machine. Wife absolutely loves it. Have had it about 3 years and still going strong. Makes great bread.
I was looking at this one also after seeing it pop up in a few reviews of other bread makers.  I think this is probably what I'll go with if/when I decide to get one.

Thank you for the advice everyone.  Much appreciated!

Agree with these. We make bread in ours once every few years. Years ago everybody had to have one. There was an entire grocery store isle of mixes. Now they can be had for next to nothing at a garage sale or thrift store. The toughest part is finding a grocery store in our area that might carry 3 or 4 mixes (I live in a very rural area). Let it take up storage space for a few years and then get rid of it.

Can someone give me the cliff notes on why you need a breadmaker?  I can remember my mom making home made bread as a kid in the oven.  Is it just a time saver or something?

I would say not a time saver or a money saver. My mom used to buy the frozen bread and make it in the oven from time to time. You would have to put it in the pan and cover and let it raise for several hours and then bake it. I think in the store those frozen loaves are $.80-$1.00 each in a bag of 5. I think it is more the magic of the smell of the bread cooking and the wonderful taste of hot bread from the oven with better melting in than a time saver or money thing.
