Breaking Bad on AMC (10 Viewers)

The Finale of The Wire was good? I thought Season 5 of the Wire as a whole was teh suck and pales in comparison to Season 5 of Breaking Bad.

That said, the rest of the Wire was as good if not better than the rest of BB, IMO.

I think the Wire lost its way after it left the Streets and Docks. I even liked the mayoral - city hall season, it gave some interesting prospective but the newspaper/media segment seemed weak by comparison.

 
Armchair QB here.....How I would have done the last 2 episodes:

2nd to last episode

-Feature Walt reading the newspapers and creating the blueprints for the finale revenge.

-Go to the bar, call for a cab, then Walt Jr. at school, same convo, cancel all the plans in his head, call cops, etc.

-End episode thinking Walt has given up

Last episode

-Open with the scene of Walt watching Charlie Rose and him setting plans into motion again

-Cab is there, so he's out in front of police by a decent amount

-Everything else happens the same

Would eliminate alot of the "unrealistic" stuff on him getting form NH to NM :shrug:

 
Ending the 2nd to last episode with us thinking Walt had given up wouldn't have had an impact since the two flash forwards told us that he was coming back to ABQ.

I thought the finale of the Wire was great. Honestly, outside of a couple episodes in season 5 of BB I thought it was the worst season by far :shrug:

Won't read this thread for fear of spoilers. Late band waggoner. Just started in the last two weeks and am half way through Season 3. Big fan.

 
Just watched the whole thing in three weeks. Best show I've ever seen, no question. I was amazed at how the quality started high and stayed high. Most shows seem to have a 'feeling out' phase before they get good, but not this one.

I'm sure every opinion has been beaten to death but I'll give mine anyway. The show was extremely heavy on foreshadowing, so I don't understand why people have questioned the ending. Of course the machine gun and ricin were going to come into play - just like Salamanca's bell and dozens of other plot devices they hammered over and over. By the 3rd season I was having a lot of fun trying to predict how the foreshadowing was going to come into play. Sometimes I was right, sometimes they got me. Helluva three-week ride :cool:

Yup. I think there are a few spots where it ratchets up significantly.

- when crazy 8 gets his it becomes apparent that the show isn't a buddy comedy action thing.

- tuco in the junkyard introduces that some bad people and bad things are coming.

- Jane dying confirms that the protagonist is no hero at all but rather a deeply selfish person.

- one minute which was so tense that it caused my wife to stop watching until just recently.

- run - which was the moment Walter took the full measures speech to heart and went from a player in the drug game to a calculating, empire making person.

I don't feel like it slowed down for a moment after that.

This show was quality from start to end. Not a dull moment :thumbup:

This is a good point - however the police weren't overly covering him like a live / still potentially dangerous suspect (although they should have been) - but either way that's a clue that they felt he wasn't a threat.

After all the goodbyes Walt said or made, and the final camera pan away from him, I'm pretty confident he's gone.

 
I intentionally avoided this thread until I was finished with the series to avoid all spoilers (I was watching it on Netflix, so a multi-month delay for each season), so I haven't yet read a lot of the first 10,000 pages worth of discussion. I do look forward to slowly working my way through it though.

One thing I just read today on Reddit that was probably discussed here previously, but which I hadn't realized yet, was the symbolic link between the burned one-eyed teddy bear from the plane crash, and Gus's ultimate fate.

Netflix has a row labeled "More like Breaking Bad" which includes things like The Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy. Which makes Netflix's recommendation engine look really good, until you look to the right and see that "More like Breaking Bad" also includes How I Met Your Mother, Super Troopers, Bob's Burgers and Zack & Miri Make a Porno.

I'm also trying to figure out how the movie White Chicks can be classified under "More like The Hunger Games", too.

Highly unusual script format. Very surprising to see. I wonder if they were all like that, that's very interesting. I mean, detailing specific camera angles, moves, cranes, etc., is considered offensive in the industry. Even in TV. In a show that was this stylistic, though, I wonder how often it occurred and if there was some kind of understanding between Vince and the directors to smooth it over.

I was thinking that myself, but you see similar things with the Coen Bros. and a few others. I assume that when you have a team that's been together for that long with a specific stylistic vision, you work it out.

Of all the great shows I've watched it's the only one that didn't have a lull. Every season was terrific. Some episodes weren't as good as others obviously but the overall level of quality was amazing.

So, it is customary for someone in the Witness Protection Program or who has been "disappeared" like Walt was, to use their actual birthdate with their new identity? I ask because Walt obviously did, which is why his ID as Mr. Lambert has his real birthdate on it when he showed it to the gal at Denny's on his 52nd.

Yes. But to add to this: saying that season 5 isn't as good as the rest of the seasons is true about practically every season of every series. Almost nothing holds up to the best of The Wire.

 
Thinking about the greatness of Breaking Bad has me more convinced that network TV is kind of dead in the water. Modern network television has been eclipsed by cable - and I don't see this changing.
