Breaking News - Terrell Owens Rushed to local hospital (1 Viewer)

Star-Telegram Staff Writers

Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens ingested a large amount of prescription pain medication in a suicide attempt, according to a Dallas police report released Wednesday morning.

The report indicates that when police asked Owens if he had tried to harm himself, he said yes.

A team source said Tuesday night that Owens had suffered an allergic reaction to pain medication Tuesday night and was admitted to Baylor Medical Center.

Owens left the hospital early this morning and police said they would make a statement during "working hours." A news conference will be held later today, police said.

Terrell Owens' publicist, Kim Etheridge, said of the incident, "This is not serious." The source said Owens' status is unknown for today's practice and for the Cowboys' game Sunday at the Tennessee Titans.

KTVT/Channel 11 reported that a fire rescue team took Owens to the hospital, reportedly to the emergency room to induce vomiting. Dallas police did not confirm nor deny any details. Calls to Owens' agent were not returned.

Owens was on pain medication after he suffered a broken bone leading to his right ring finger in the Sept. 17 game against Washington. The next day, Owens had a plate screwed in to protect the bone so it could heal with no further risk of damage.

Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said Sept. 20, "the pain medicine made [Owens] ill."

The original prognosis was that Owens would be out two to four weeks.

But after having the plate inserted into his hand, the question was whether Owens could withstand the pain of playing and catching passes with the plate.

Owens has not practiced with the team since the injury. He caught passes Tuesday on the side from teammate Sam Hurd, and Parcells said he thought Owens would join the team for practice today.

"Yeah, the swelling has gone down pretty good," Parcells said. "He's caught some balls and he ran a lot [Tuesday]. [Today] he'll do something. We have a ways to go."

And Parcells said there was a long time before Sunday.

"If he can get to the point where it looks like he can function and he feels pretty good about it....It's just, can he withstand the pain of catching the ball? If he can withstand it, he can play."

However, after Tuesday night's developments, Owens' status for the rest of the week is uncertain.

I say we all wait till we hear what comes out of TO's mouth before we go by initial claims on a police report. If the report is true, I hope TO can find whatever it is his life is lacking.
Now why we would we do that? Apparently his own official auotbiography with his words, is incorrect. If he can't be truthful in his biography, how are we supposed to believe anything he says?Plus, do you really think he's gonna come clean on this, assuming there's any truth to it?

Mike & Mike looked to almost break in with an update on the TO saga, but it was quashed. They said they'll be working on it behind the scenes and will return with it later...

Based on what I have seen of TO, attempted suicide would be a most unlikely scenario.
As fans ... I'd think we're too distant from the underlying personnas of the players to have any real insight.
Exactly! How would anyone that has never met him know what is doing on inside his head?
Because those sounds he utters are called "words".
 Really? So when has he ever stated..."I'm messed up and will try and kill myself or do something for a cry for help"?
So you think Owens is the model of stability? :lmao: If you're waiting on him to yell to the world, "I'm unstable!", then you should just return to your coloring books.
I guess you are just smarter than us to have had the foresight that TO would do something as extreme as take his own life. I don't care how he has acted in the past. NONE of us would have any idea of exactly what was going on in his mind that he would try something like this. Remember, some people thought many of his antics were just ploys.

ESPN just reported last night as a "reaction". It's on Mike and Mike right now.
That was on the update. When they came back Greeney was about to update a story. Then he paused and said oh ok were going to wait on this. We will get back to it later. It sounds like he was just about ready to report it but was told not to.

Common decency, man. I know the media paints a pretty picture of TO, but this report should have never been leaked. T.O. isn't some scumbag, and if he has a problem, I'm sure he will be forward about, especially now that the media has leaked his problem to the whole world. I'm done with this topic, as I'm sure it will be filled with true scumbags that have nothing better to do with their life than rip an individual they have never met and do not like. I wish TO nothing but the best. Get well soon.

Police report: Terrell Owens attempted suicide

08:26 AM CDT on Wednesday, September 27, 2006

WFAA-TV Staff

Terrell Owens broke a finger in the Sept. 17 game against the Redskins. According to a Dallas police report obtained by News 8, Dallas Cowboys star receiver Terrell Owens attempted suicide Tuesday night.

The report says Owens was depressed and reportedly took prescription pain pills. A woman companion states that she observed him putting two pills in his mouth.

According to the police narrative, the woman said the prescription of 40 pills was filled on September 18 and—until Tuesday—Owens had taken only five pills.

The police report said Owens was asked if he had taken the rest of the prescription; Owens said, "Yes."

According to the report, police also asked if he was trying to harm himself. Owens answered, "Yes."

Owens was treated at Baylor University Medical Center.

Well ... with the thread merge, the thread title is fairly inaccurate. The attempted suicide angle is pretty darn huge.

Fanball's player reports:

09/27 00:32 Cowboys: T.O. rushed to hospital

The News

Terrell Owens was rushed to a Dallas-area hospital Tuesday night, where doctors tried induce vomiting, according to KTVT television in Dallas. It wasn't immediately known what caused Owens' trip to the emergency room.

Our View

It isn't yet known whether Owens' trip to the ER had anything to do with the broken bone and subsequent operation he had performed last week. Though Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said earlier in the day that Owens was expected to practice on Wednesday, his return to the practice field could now be delayed further.

If he did indeed attempt suicide, he instantly moves from the most unsympathetic figure in sports (in my eyes anyway) to a human being that I genuinely feel sorry for.

I never hated the guy. I thought it was a bit obvious that he had some internal struggles that led to his ridiculous behavior. No, I'm not saying I would have predicted this.

Glad the suicide thread was merged with this one

Only a half hour behind The Ticket... :D

Iv'e hated him for a while. You still don't want to see someone try and off themself though. :(

I thought he was realeased from the hospital allready? But then again you would think he would have allready had pretty much every pain med there is throughout his career and would not have a reaction from one now.
exactly why I thought it was fishy last night.
Yep. Plus the injury happened 10 days ago, were we to believe he took the medication for the first time last night? :fishy:I've also never heard of pumping a stomach due to an allergic reaction. That screams OD.

I agree, but the cynic in me wonders if this was a PR attempt at turning him into a sympathetic figure. Who knows? It's such a soap opera.

Been lurking, don't know what to say but feel compelled to say something. What a terrible story, I wish the T.O. the best.

My manager just called me, said he heard on the radio that it was an attempted suicide. Not sure on much more details or if the radio is just spouting rumors. I'm sure given the nature of this, it'll get coverage soon enough. Sorry I don't have a link or anything, I'm concerned for sure, but this is TO we're talking about...

This is clearly tragic and I think even the biggest TO-haters out there would hope that the guy is OK and gets whatever help he needs.

That said, I'm not looking forward to the inevitable rush of "we were too hard on him" commentary. I don't think any of the reactions to his antics were out of line, even though in hindsight there was clearly more going on here than we thought.

Glad the suicide thread was merged with this one

It can't really surprise you that ESPN was a half hour behind can it? It's not uncommon for local outlets to get stories first and major networks to pick them up after the fact.

Regardless, I had a Bi-polar cousin (who was more like a brother to me) commit suicide a few years back. If not handled right, the situation can sprial out of control quickly.

Something doesn't make sense here.

You don't attempt suicide and then get released from the hospital 12 hours later. There's no way the doctors and hospital would allow him to be released if he were truly suicidal. They take on way too much liability if that occurs.

Does anyone have a clue where he went after being released? If he has gone to a mental hospital, then the story makes sense. But if he's at home (or shows up for practice today), there's no way he attempted suicide last night.

I thought about this as well. Don't they usually keep the person for further evaluation?

So how will the NFL handle this?

Their previous track record for situations like this and how they're handled ain't so hot and TO is a MAJOR NFL star.

Who was that defensive cat that the Vikes drafted and then flittered around the league for awhile, before flaming out in a big way?

One thing, whether TO was trying to kill himself of not, why is the fact that he allegedly admitted to trying to harm himself being taken at face value? If either he took a bunch of his pills or was just having a bad reaction to the prescription dosage, isnt his state of mind while being rushed to the ER a bit suspect? If he was doped up they might have asked him if the moon was made of spare ribs or if he wanted to run off and start a new life with Jeff Garcia and he might have said yes.

He's still in the hospital...
