In all, he’ll receive $40 million this year, $10 million in 2013, $11 million in 2014, $19 million in 2015, and $20 million in 2016. Which makes it, in essence, a three-year, $61 million contract with a team option for year four (at $19 million) and year five (at $20 million).

Going by this info, Brees' cap hit per season will be:2012 - $10.4 M

2013 - $17.4 M

2014 - $18.4 M

2015 - $26.4 M to keep him, $14.8 M to cut him

2016 - $27.4 to keep him, $7.4 M to cut him

...

Kinda have to think a healthy, still-rolling Brees would restructure after the 2014 to exchange some salary for additional signing bonus. That would change the 2015 & 2016 cap-hit figures.

Sure, he'll restructure, and take some of that in bonus money. Plus the cap should be bigger at that time too. Very good job by Loomis, and Brees.

I really don't see that much surprising about the contract that I'd say Brees was swimming in leverage.$40m guaranteed money, $20m yearly average, 5 years, none of it is any kind of big step above what we've seen for elite QBs. Yearly money is in line with what we've seen for Brady ($18m) a few years ago, Peyton this year ($19m) and with the Colts (want to say $20m off the top of my head but someone can double check me) a couple years ago. Brady got more in guaranteed money for a 4 year contract.Not saying it's not a good contract. It's the best QB contract so far, yes. But just best by a little bit though, not by a lot. Seems right about where you'd expect him to come in given what we've seen so far, and that he should have more longevity than Manning and Brady.

From ESPN's breakdown, he has $40m year one, all guaranteed. He gets $15m year 2, so $55m his first 2 years. Then he makes $6m in year 3, for a 3 year total of $61m.The 2 year total is a little high, the 3rd year it comes right back down to the average.

Let me post to add, as I just saw on PFT... in addition to the $40m guaranteed, he has an additional $20m that is injury guaranteed only. Which helps tremendously since I imagine injury is about the only reason he'd not see the money as it is hard to picture him being released for performance. I was wondering why the reports were disagreeing on total amount of guaranteed money, some are counting just the fully guaranteed $40m and some are including the additional $20m injury guaranteed.

40 million in a year how is that not overpaid for a top 5 QB yes but an aging one at that.

I have always defended athletes and their salaries but that is a crazy number for 1 year, I don't know how you slice that it's worth it unless your are guaranteed to win the super bowl. Also football is a business I don't see players saying oh we didn't win this year let me give my salary back to the fans because they deserve it.

good for all parties concerned. brees got what he's worth to the franchise. the FO got him to a come to only $20 million a year over the length of the contract. they didn't want to cave into his demand for $21 million.
