Brett Favre is a hypocrite (1 Viewer)

I was thinking about this on the way to work. I don't know if it was brought up in any other thread (I just got back from vacation and am not about to look).

Brett railed on Sterling Sharpe for 'not honoring his contract.' Brett railed on Javon Walker for 'not honoring his contract.'

If Brett wants to play ... he should honor his flippin' contract!!!

My guess is that Favre would be THRILLED to honor his contract with the Pack! However, he doesn't want to come back with them if he's just going to rot on the bench. That's the problem. He's not threatening a holdout or asking for his release over $$$. Favre wants to play...and so far, it doesn't sound as though his best opportunity to play in 2008 is with the Packers.

But he's not going to rot on the bench. If Rodgers couldn't make it thru the year healthy as a part-timer .... do you honestly think he's going to make it thru as a starter??Even so, who gives a rip if he's sitting on the bench. He signed the contract, he should honor it.

His contract does not guarantee that he is a starter. I completely agree that he is a hypocrite. He should practice what he preaches.

I don't get all this Favre hate.

He decided to retire and changed his mind. He threw for 4200 yards, 28 TDS and led his team to the NFC championship game last year, why should he sit on the bench for Aaron Rodgers. What has Aaron Rodgers ever done to be ahead of a guy who is a legend and had an awesome season last year. The guy has been retired for 3 months, I think the Packers really could re-adjust what they changed in the offseason during VOLUNTARY minicamp.

The Packers are a better team with Favre this year, it's not a question in my mind. Aaron Rodgers is no Steve Young, he doesn't have an NFL MVP season under his belt like Young did so I don't see how wanting to play Rodgers would be more important than using Favre and trying to get a Super Bowl. Aaron Rodgers could be a bum, we don't know, he should not be the reason to push Favre out the door. I'm on Favre's side and to tell the truth I've never liked the Packers or Favre although I do respect Favre.

People/Fans get to caught up. Take a simple approach to it and realize first and foremost that Favre is human. He changed his mind about retiring. Athletes have been doing this for years, too many to name. The point is its his own "legacy" and he can do what he wants with it. I really don't think he cares, the fans are the ones who care more than he does. If he wants to play let him. Football is only a game PERIOD. Yeah I know they make plenty of money doing it. But that is what the market dictates and what value an owner/team wants to pay. Favre has one life to live when his life is over, last I check, he isn't going to live again. The Pack should let him come back and play for them, trade him or release him. What harm will it do? What are they afraid of? Anyone with a football mind knows Favre is the best QB for the Packers if he is to play for them. For those who say he is a hypocite, whatever. It amazes me to think people act like they have not ever reneged on anything in life or just simplied went back and forth on a decision many times. Just as Favre did or has done. Some decisions are not black and white, emotions, family etc. play a role in decisions we all make.

I could not care less if he came back or not. I just want to take the situation out of a "sports realm" and put it into real life thoughts.

It's not Favre hate. I said it in the email. I'm a Packer fan AND I'm a Favre fan (I firmly believe that the Pack is a MUCH better team with Favre starting) .... but on this issue Brett's 100% in the wrong. He signed the contract, he needs to honor it.

Because you are a Packer fan.

I am not a Packer fan nor do I consider myself a hater, but I believe that hypocrite is such a stong word and one that everyone is guilty of on some level. I would be more comfortable with a word such as hubris. I may be out of line here, but this seems comparable to the power play that Chad Johnson pulled earlier this year. The difference is that Chad didn't play the retirement card.

I don't remember Chad Johnson talking about other players honoring their contract when they were holding out.

The bigger difference is Chad didn't preach to other players about something he did himself.

I agree, there's no gaurantee of him being a starter and in fact, he should embrace the idea of open competition. Why not go into camp telling the coaches to choose who's better from what they see in practice. Does he really want the team to start him if indeed Rodgers is better at this point? Is that fair to the rest of the team? I think for the team to embrace either QB at this point, they deserve whomever is the best player at this point, and that should be decided on the field. An open camp, best player starts. Whomever isn't the better man at this point, mans up and is the backup.

I'm not sure, but as a Cowboy fan, I hope Farve stays retired. Rodgers isn't proven, will get dinged at some point which is where we'll see what kind of player he really is and without Farve, who is there backup? I know with Farve, they could fall back on Rodgers like they did in the Dallas game. If Rodgers goes down, can the offense still run effectively?

I simply believe that Favre's viewpoint is motivated by speaking out of an attitude of hubris rather than hypocracy. In the process he may very well be a hypocrite.

 I seriously doubt that this is true.

That contract was written for Brett Farve. If he would have gotten hurt while playing, he would have been paid for that year. It isn't subject to him playing and starting 16 games.

This seems/feels different to me though. He retires as a starter after a very productive season. He decides in March that his tank is empty, so he retires. The team asks him to CONFIRM that he isn't coming back before the draft, and he says "Yep." [the reason why the Packers have moved on with Rodgers] They add Brohm and anoint Rodgers as their starter, along with drafting another QB. Favre THEN decides that he isn't ready to hang 'em up.Where's the part where Favre is the hypocrite? It wasn't a contract dispute, and he isn't threatening a hold-out. He retired, thinking that he was sincerely done, then later changed his mind. Meanwhile, the team made all their arrangements for life after Favre. Now Favre wants to come back and PLAY, but the team is saying he's welcome to come back and hold a clipboard, and that they have no intentions of releasing him so he can find playing time elsewhere. Since then, Favre has not threatened ANYTHING to my knowledge...just reiterating through his agent that he wants to PLAY.

If somebody can point out the hypocrisy in that whole storyline, I'm all-ears.... :lmao:

I just watched an interview with Favre on Fox. He's seems pretty genuine to me, a standup guy like always. Green Bay should start him or release him. He wants to play, let him!

Call Favre what you will (besides Lovie Smith's personal beaotch), but either he'll be starting for the Packers on Week One, or he'll be starting for a playoff caliber AFC team. Or he'll be injured because he's on the cover of Madden's video game. :coffee:

That's EXACTLY how I heard the whole deal. I don't think he did anything wrong either btw... He simply told them how he felt at the time, and he never officially filed his retirement papers - according to what he just said on TV.

Let him come back and compete for the job against Rodgers...Rodgers will injure something as usual and be out...Favre will have his old job back and everyone will be happy.

After seeing the Favre interview it is cut and dry to me play him, release him or trade him. I'm dumbfounded on what the Packer brass is thinking again I ask, what harm will it do in trading, releasing or playing him and what are they afraid of? Someone please answer these 2 questions.

This has ZERO to do with legacy, loyalty, history or whatever. He just wants to play football.............Let him play football.

Packer management is being very selfish.

Brett Favre is better than A Rogers.

Ask Ryan Grant who he would rather have at QB.

Packers will not have a $12m backup.

Packers are garbage if they tell him now that he would be a backup. That tells me they don't want the best QB to start and that they are fine with 8 -8 this year.

But hey..Minnesota will probably win that division anyway.

Very disappointed in the Packers Brass. Brett needs to play. This is the first time that I have had bad feelings towards the packers organization in my life.

In the interview he said he retired because he was being pressured. He said MM called him every week asking what he decided. He also said if they gave him til training camp he would have come up with a decision.

Is he serious? After the draft. He couldn't do it in april? That's almost 4 months.

This is what he did the first year, they waited until after the draft. Good luck whatever team gets him. He'll be fine year one but will screw up your off season plans if you let him.

except Brian Brohm, who is probably better than Rodgers anyway.

The timeframe to tell them does not matter to me. If he said it in April, May, June or July he still wants to play. The Packers made other plans during the interim of Favre making his decision. Favre understands that, as he stated, so why are they not trading, releasing or playing him?

I see what you did there.

Whatever. The guy's wanted out since Thompson arrived. He's #####ed and complained about everything Thompson's done. Yet it was Thompson's team around him that helped put up that 13-3 record.

If he doesn't like success, then let him move on.

This "I just changed my mind crap" just doesn't fly with me. He retired, then showed up on Letterman and basically called his shot. This was planned all along. Don't let the good ol' boy pull one over on you.

That's only true if you pin your whole team on that year and don't plan for the future. Get real. Show me another team that year after year pinned their year on one player coming back or retiring. It affects free agency and who you draft. :lmao:

As a Packer fan and Favre fan I feel like both parties could have approached this differently. I wish Favre would have just said that he is going to play this year and not openly tell anyone that he doesnt know if he could play another year. He could keep this all internal and then if week two into training camp he realizes he's done, he could retire then. Yeah, it would probably irk some people but I dont think it would cause the media storm that's going on now. I think that would have been better than what's gone on.

He said in the interview the Pack wanted an answer before the draft. He retired on March 3. The draft was on April 26. That's 8 weeks of time he could have waited to make sure. He chose not to. Sucks to be him.

They could put Matt Flynn on their practice squad. Just because they drafted two QBs doesn't mean there's no room on the roster for Favre. WTF, he was a 7th round pick.

How many years was it before Favre arrived that the Packers made the playoffs... I'm just throwin' that out there. 72', then '82, then when Favre got there in '92, and they've pretty much made it regularly.

Alot of people don't like there boss, the company is doing well and they still may want to leave and work for the competition.

Sure. But don't show up on TV and lie about it then. He's putting the blame squarely on the Packer front office rather than manning up and telling the truth.I have a hard time believing anything other than the guy's wanted out for years. He has not liked Thompson period.

Something tells me there's plenty of room for Favre on the roster, just not in the #1 slot. His entire response in the interview was basically "I wasn't 100% committed, but now I am, unless I'm not the starter, in which case I'm not".

They executed their plans because he retired. The hopes of the team was not on Brett after they named Rodgers the starter and drafted QBs. IMO the plans are already made, the Pack have moved on..............Again I ask why don't they release, trade or play him?

What more can he or the Packers say????? From the conversations he has had with Packer brass they don't want him. Let him go, that is the simple solution why is this hard to do?

They can do whatever the hell they want to do, as he's under contract with them. That doesn't make it right though. They won't release him and have Tampa or Minnesota knock them out of the playoffs though, with Favre at the helm. I think the solution is to trade him to an AFC team - and not get much back in return.

How about this. My contention is that Favre knew he was coming back all along, as the Letterman interview more or less confirms. So rather then just manning up, he said he'd retire, knowing Green Bay would make plans without him. Then, knowing they made plans without him, Favre springs this news with the knowledge they wouldn't welcome him back with open arms.Yes, he wants out. But instead of just saying that in the first place, he played it to make himself look good and make the Packers look at fault. Not a big fan of that move.

I watched the same interview and came away with a different impression. He looked like a deer in the headlights as he tried to explain away his "retirement" press conference. It was hard to watch.I love watching Favre. Favre can still play. But he made a decision to retire and that's what he told his team he would do. They prepared in the off-season working with this assumption. And they simply can't release or trade away their team's icon. He has to retire a Packer.Favre, it's time to man-up, retire for good, and move on with your life. Jesus.

Thanks for reading. You'll have to excuse me if I step in to prevent the lynching of an innocent man.And crazy is the idiot wing of Packer nation selling "Fire Ted Thompson" T-shirts. Wasn't the guy Executive of the Year last year?
