I was looking at some footage the other day of Brett Favre and studying his face. He does not seem like the deepest thinker in the world. As we have all seen he has the "little boy" enthusiasm, we have also heard his home spun Mississippi 'good ol boy' delivery and we have the vague sense that he loves to go off in the woods and hunt whatever edible mammals happen to be moving nearby. Looking at Brett, I thought "This guy is an extreme male, there doesn't seem to be anything soft or female about him." I am sure this sounds like some kind of strange observation to most of you (and it is.) But where I am going with this is that I think that our best athletes play the role of heroes in our society, like they have done going back to ancient times.

So at this point in pro football I think there are three real QB heroes, Favre, Manning and Brady. Each guy can single-handedly lead his team to a win. Each are very different than the others. So who is your favorite hero? Not "Who is the best?" but who do you identify with and root for?

Favre: The 100% male male, jock from the time he as a kid, Plain speaking, unintellectual, huntin', fishin', country boy, gunslinger, gambler, rifle arm.

Manning: Prototype physically, a "towering presence," makes those around him better, master at the technical part of the game, out thinks most defenses, uses all weopons, including distraction and confusion.

Brady: Overachiever who proved the experts wrong about his 7th round draft position, completely focused on his work, handsome, toothpaste good looks, never lets up, a QB machine that has no specific super strengths other than his mastery of every aspect of QB'ing.

Are you a woman or gay? When I watch football, I don't think about this nor do I care about this.

I might have agreed your comment about Favre a year ago but listening to him in interviews after the game its obvious he puts in a huge amount of time studying the game compared to what he did 10 years ago. Without seeing the tape he can tell you where every player was on the field, where they moved to, where they were going to, and what he was thinking during the play. He a big kid, with a quad core pentium processor in his head.

The difference between him and the other two mentioned here is that he enjoys life to the fullest.

Before I opened the poll I figured PM would be in dead last...and I was right. For whatever reason, and I think it is his over-commercialization, he has lost the fan appeal.

I personally would take Brady if given a choice. Favre, while incredibly durable, is crazy. Manning and Brady are technicians - but overall I am a bigger fan of Brady's posie versus the frenetic actions of Manning as he approaches the line.

Brady and Manning make it look easy -- effortless. Favre appears to try harder. We all like those who give 110%, and whether he actually does give more than Brady and Manning is moot. Favre brings an emotional element to the game that the others do not. It's his passion that is contagious, and it makes us love him, and football, all the more.

I voted for Favre.

For me it's not his effort or his "100% male male" nature but it is his infectious, extroverted enthusiasm.

His teammates have to feel it for I can catch a bit of it through my TV.

This is no doubt a key observation. How could Favre be having the kind of year he is having unless he knows where all his folks are. He must have some kind of a super football processor in his head.

Favre does seem cut of a different cloth... which I guess was one of the thoughts I had in creating this post. Two great points to bring up where Favre is concerned... durable and crazy. Maybe that should get on his plaque in Canton.

Agreed...the other 2 are almost, robotic in everything they do.On the field and off.

This is a good post. I will say that Payton, with all of his yelling and gesturing at the line seems to be working too hard. It has made me wonder if he is trying to bring attention to himself. Who knows? It's a style.

I agree the enthusiasm is a great quality. I've heard he dresses with the coaches and doesn't really interact with the guys on the team... which if true is too bad and seems to contradict the "good teammate" tag.

I am surprised by the % who prefer Favre... but its revealing. I voted for Manning but I agree with all of the knocks against him people have mentioned. I can't stand Brady... he and the Pats are just too good. Screw 'em.

Who would you want to back you up in a fight?

I think most people identify with the qualities they would most like to possess. Chop out the homers and I think Farve wins by a landslide.

Brett Favre is not only the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, he's the finest human being I've ever met.

Favre is winning by a landslide even with the homers. Without them, it is nearly unanimous. I think this is a reflection of the way Favre has carried himself throughout his career, in stark contrast to Brady in particular. Not because he is so manly, as the OP suggested IMHO. To me the interesting question is whether this can propel Favre to the MVP this season. I think it can. Brady is putting up all the numbers, but his team and he by association is doing it in the worst possible way. Spygate. Running up the scores. Shamelessly padding stats. When voting for the MVP, how many voters will bring themselves to vote for the stats guy rather than everybody's favorite player who is winning games singlehandedly? Favre is the embodiment of everything that is great about football, while Brady represents everything that is wrong with football. Yep, Favre for MVP!

Of course we had to have at least one appearance by a Favre hating troll.
 I love Favre.

I just love attracting you into a thread within nanoseconds even more.
No....you're just a tool.
And yet, here you are. I'll bet you won't let me get the last word here, will you?

Are you denying that Favre was a vicodin addict?
Nice example of pissing in a thread. Enjoy a brief vacation.

The vicodin incident just shows that Favre is human. He's not perfect or on some ungodly pedestal. Brady is a pretty boy, someone if I met in real life I'd never be able to relate to. So how is life with whatever current model you are dating? Are you thinking about appearing on the cover of GQ magazine again? Ummm... no...I'd pass on that conversation.Favre is human, seems like a normal guy.
