Rookie linebacker Brian Cushing has a knee injury and will not play this Saturday in the Texans' preseason opener at Kansas City. Texans coach Gary Kubiak did not specify how long Cushing would miss. Cushing, the team's starter at strongisde linebacker, had an MRI on the knee last night and was at practice in a brace with an ice pack on his knee.
"We're kind of in an evaluation period," Kubiak said. "He's been fine, he practiced all day yesterday, actually even got in his weight workout after practice. Then, last night his knee got sore on him, and so we're kind of evaluating where he's at right now. He's going to miss some time. How much? I won't know for a couple days."
The Texans are expected to issue a statement on Cushing's official injury status later today. Linebacker Zac Diles moved over to the strongside with the first team in Cushing's place. Diles had a team-leading 66 tackles as the Texans' strongside linebacker in 2008 before he suffered a season-ending leg injury.
"Zac made his living there last year before he got hurt," Kubiak said. "We've been working him at WILL since we got Brian in here. Zac makes an unselfish move for the team to go back and go to work at SAM."
