Brian Kelly (1 Viewer)

A Norwegian Lutheran can pay homage to Touchdown Jesus without any sort of pangs of regret. Is Notre Dame really ready for "Touchdown Abraham"?
If this was truly a concern it would have been raised by now. With a name like Kelly most people will assume he is Irish Catholic, and even if they do happen to know I doubt any of them will care.
Holtz Name Meaning and History1. German: topographic name from Middle High German holz ‘small wood’, ‘copse’. 2. Jewish (Ashkenazic): from German Holz ‘wood’, either an ornamental name or a metonymic occupational name for a woodcutter or someone who sold wood. Weis Name Meaning and History1. German: nickname from Middle High German wis(e) ‘wise’, ‘clever’, ‘experienced’, Middle Low German wis. 2. Respelling of German and Jewish Weiss.
This is a ridiculous line of questioning here.
I guess if Coach Kelly doesn't care what people assume about him and his religious persuasion, that's fine, but why should we just expect that he's willing to live in the closet? That's kind of insulting, don't you think, especially when they're playing most games on his sabbath?

I thought you guys were just joking about the Jewish thing, and still may be, but just so we're all on the same page,

But a high-level college job that may open after next season just may be a perfect fit for him. Charlie Weis, Notre Dame’s coach, is under significant pressure after the Irish stumbled to a 7-6 season. And the 47-year-old Kelly, who declined to talk about Notre Dame after a Cincinnati practice here this week, is an Irish Catholic who grew up in a household where the Fighting Irish were the only game on television on Saturday.
NY Times Orange Bowl article

The Irish name only takes a candidate so far. Ask George O'Leary. And Charlie Weis looks like a less bona fide coach after the NE cheating scandal.

How did Notre Dame do with the last coach it got from Cincinnati?
Faust would end his stint at Notre Dame with a 30-26-1 record, never winning more than seven games in one season and never coming even close to contending for a national title. This included four consecutive losses against Air Force, whom the Irish had never lost to prior to 1982. Despite his mediocre record and growing discontent among Irish fans, Faust was allowed to remain at Notre Dame for the entire duration of his five-year contract.

from a prestige standpoint, UF doesn't even compare to ND or any of the other upper tier programs. (frankly, neither does USC).

Set aside the past 15 years and take a look, UF's program was crap.
The point is that he can get any player he wants at Florida. Notre Dame is supposedly being restrictive about academics (and has been since Holtz left). Meyer can be as great of a coach as he wants, but won't succeed without the players.I don't know what the prestige is supposed to mean. UF is a top 5 program right now in all respects. No reason to leave.
Historical Prestige my man...Florida, Florida State, etc. are just RECENTLY players....Notre Dame has until RECENTLY always been a player.
fixed
Quick, name another team that has all its home games nationally televised. Whether or not ND is a championship contender, they are always a player because of fan base and money. Just look at Weiss' recruiting classes despite his poor record. He's getting talented guys year in and year out.

I personally dont think we'll know if Weiss is going anywhere until after the USC game, but Kelly would be a good choice.

PS - Rutgers could very well NOT be a stepping stone. Just expanded the stadium to around 50k, they're the only school of note in a good football state, and they're a large state school. Its a program that still needs alot of work, but there is an opportunity there for Schiano to build up Rutgers ala Paterno built up Penn State.

If your definition of "player" is having your home games nationally televised then only ND currently qualifies. But we know that's not the defintition being used because before the NBC contract not even ND had all of its home games nationally televised. The only things currently prestigeous about ND are its history and the NBC contract. Money and talent mean nothing if it doesn't result in wins on Saturday. ND hasn't been a "player" since Holtz left.

Most of Florida's success has come in the past 20 years. When using the eras before the BCS was created, Florida never finished higher than 27th in any of them. Through 1958, Florida was buried in the bottom half of the nation, behind schools such as Indiana, Vanderbilt and Rutgers. The Gators didn't win a bowl game in the '70s at all.
All that proves is that Meyer doesn't want to be the Gators coach in the 1970s. I don't think he has to worry much about that.

They havent finished the season with a chance at a national championship in a while, but they have BCS appearances. They have enough clout to force the BCS to give them an AQ birth with 9 wins on a year. They have the facilities of a top school. They are always relevant, whether they suck or not. No other school can say that. They are a player in recruiting and even if they only get a BCS bid every 3 years, they are a player in FCS.

They have the facilities of a top school.
Is this still true? I know the school is pretty and historic, and they have a huge booster presence. Do they still have top flight weight rooms, practice facilities, etc? The stadium is certainly nothing special compared to many others.

They sunk a lot of money into the facilities. Stadium holds over 80,000 also.
That's good...but not top 15.Looks like they added some new scoreboards this off-season, but prior to that hadn't put any money in it since '97. I've just heard luke-warm reactions to visits there.
