Brian Williams - IDP steal? (1 Viewer)

As expected, Drayton Florence, who signed a six-year, $36 million contract with the Jaguars in the offseason, lined up at right cornerback, which meant Williams switched to safety for the first time since he was a sophomore at N.C. State.

Although Florence said in March that he would be a starting cornerback and Williams would move to safety, Del Rio declined to confirm it. He still wasn't eager to confirm the move Monday, even after it was made at practice.

"Everything will work out in time," said Del Rio, who was emphatic that Williams will be "starting somewhere."

Because Williams is due to make $4 million in base salary next season and has a $6 million salary-cap number, the Jaguars can't afford to have him in a part-time role.

And Williams has no problems with switching to safety, saying, "Just as long as I'm on the field, I'm happy."

The switch could strengthen the Jaguars' defense at two positions. Florence would be counted on to be a better coverage corner, and Williams would be expected to be an upgrade at safety over Sammy Knight, who left in free agency, and Gerald Sensabaugh, who has returned from two torn labrums.

Brian Williams to start at safety

My guess is Williams will be at strong safety on 1st and 2nd down, and maybe nickelback on third down? I think this piece says everything that needs to be said about the Brian Williams/Gerald Sensabaugh argument. I suppose Sensabaugh could win the job in camp, but it seems unlikely.

Jags looking at moving Williams to safety.

Porter at wide receiver, Florence at cornerback give Jaguars a different look

:(

Thats what caught my attention. Rare to see a CB convert to SS.

This would concern me long term.

Alfie Crow over at JagNation thinks that Williams might not be big enough to play SS and expects him to "start" at nickel corner against passing teams. So, really you're looking at someone that is playing corner at least half the time, and maybe some safety to keep him on the field when the opposition runs multi-TE formations. I wouldn't get too excited.

That was the first thing I looked at. What other safety on that roster is any bigger than Williams (5-11 / 202)? Sensabaugh goes something like 6-1 / 204. Granted he's not 215, like Knight, and I'm sure Mr Crow is intune with things, but if the size thing is all he's basing it on, I wouldn't be concerned.
