Lions moving Williams-Broncos?

Roy Williams | Lions

The Detroit Free Press claims the Lions now have plans to trade Williams, and are entertaining offers from teams. The Broncos have contacted the team about an offer for their second and Domonique Foxworth.

Williams has already established himself as one of the league's elite wide receivers. The 26-year-old had 63 catches for 836 yards and five touchdowns last season before missing the final four regular-season games with a knee injury.

Would be a decent trade for both sides...Foxworth is a an up-and-comer who would fit fantasically in a cover-2 scheme like Marinelli runs, and Roy of course would do well in Denver.

Would guess Denver would have to add something to this trade, but its certainly interesting.

Would guess this trade would be preferable for the Lions over a similar offer from the Eagles given A) it would send Roy out of conference, and B) Sheppard is going to demand alot more money than Foxworth.

Wait, WTF? Why would the Lions trade away their best player?

Hmmm. I guess I already answered that by myself.

Why would the Lions trade away their best player?
Roy Williams has basically already stated that hes not going to resign with the Lions so they can either trade him now for something, or just get a compensatory pick for him in the 2009 draft....

Don't get too excited Broncos fans. Dallas with two first round picks can step right in and trump any offer the Broncos make. Roy Williams is from Texas and would love nothing more to wear that star on his helmet.

the Lions could tag Williams next year

Sorta useless to pay a receiver top 5 money for a team thats going to be competing for the #1 pick...not to mention there are always problems with holdouts etc. when players get franchised, but yeah you are right they potentially could just keep franchising him...damn i hate that clause

I'd like to trade Roy Williams for Roy Williams. Where's Redman?

:blackdot: Or they could just tag him and trade him ala Aneas Williams, Corey Williams, etc etc.

the thing to consider is that one of these years Millen will need to win games to keep his job. Also, The Lion fan base will want to see that the Lions are not just mailing it in. It seems as though the Lions' team, coaches, and front office are the only ones that expect wins from this team. The fans know better. I guess hope springs eternal in the offseason.

Why wouldn't they trade him this summer then instead...he is more appealing when he comes at a cheaper price to other teams, because he is not a top five paid receiver right now...it really doesnt do much do keep him around this year unless they think it could aid in the development of Calvin Johnson, but normally when someone becomes disinterested in a team it hurts the entire locker room and they are much better off just trading him this offseason :)

He'll be a top 5 paid WR no matter when he gets traded...he'll get a new contract this year if hes traded, or next year if hes traded.I haven't seen that Roy is "disinterested" in playing for the Lions, just that he'd prefer to play elsewhere. Given hes in a contract year, if he sticks with the Lions he'll be wanting to play his best to maximize his new contract.

Further, the Lions' coaching staff needs to win this year, and taking a combination of draft picks and lesser players for Roy is a move that will pay off in the future, not this season.

I don't see how any of that justifies trading him this offseason. They'll do it if they get a great offer, but otherwise they'll keep him, because theres no real pressure to move him.

The SMART thing to do would be to keep him and then tag him if they want to trade him because you get a year of service from him at a minimum and contrary to you assumption I don't think his value is any greater right now. Plus, a lot can happen in a year: what if CJ2 becomes Charles Rogers? What if he has a career damaging injury? Williams has been the teams best offensive player and their only top WR who has actually lived up to expectations: if I were a Lions fan I would be outraged that they are even talking about this.

I wonder if Shanny will unload another of his dead beat RBs on Detroit as part of a deal, ala Tatum Bell?

I can't find this anywhere on the Detroit website and McMillen just recently said he wasn't trading Roy. Sounds like an internet rumor.

Not to mention this goes against the strategy that the Broncos have adopted this offseason.
