Browns Score With Three (3) Off. Down Linemen (1 Viewer)

Take a look at this video of Robert Royal scoring on a pass for the Browns vs the Bengals.

The Browns only used three down linemen:

You might want to freeze it at 00:00-00:01 so you can see the lineup, as it starts up pretty quickly.

Given the flexibility in the rules, it surprises me that more offensive coordinators / coaches don't use this more often. It was obviously effective here. Not all the time, just.... more often, or occasionally.

Before this play this year the Browns had had 9 TD passes, that's nine.

Interesting setup. Seven men on the lOS, yet only three are down.

However, I was wondering how 63 avoided a block in the back call. Seems blatant to me between the :01 and :02 second mark.

I don't even think 63 was covered, which is kind of funny, and he goes back to block and is too late to block the man rushing in. Actually if you notice Mike Bell (No. 22) gets away with a pass interference / illegal block downfield about 5 yards up. He must be used to blocking on screens, and in fact that's probably exactly how the play looks like it's going to go with O-linemen and a blocking TE covering up the WR's, which looks pretty dangerous. Instead the Browns ran the TE out deep and use the RB to block not go out as a receiver.Thing is there is so much going on in that play not only did the Bengals not what to do neither did the refs. Too much going on for them to catch all the spots.
