Bryan Scott (LB/S) BUF (1 Viewer)

This guy is racking up the tackles today and has LB and S eligibility in Yahoo leagues. His last 2 weeks he has not racked up tackles. What is the deal today? Anyone have any insight on this guy?

he's a nickel LB so his production will be heavily matchup-dependent. I think the Bills basically used their nickel package as their base against the Patriots and wanted to use him to try and match up with Gronkowski. This is probably why New England averaged about 7 yards per carry on the ground.

Next week against a run-heavy team like the 49ers, I assume Scott will go back to being less of a factor.

Exactly right, not to mention Byrd left the game with an injury that probably helped Scott even more. I don't see him being consistently productive week to week.

what happened to Sheppard this yr?
nothing. he was never expected to play in the nickel package.
hold on, Sheppard was being prop'd as an LB2, pretty sure he was expected to be in the sub-packages during the off-seasonLB2 HIGH CEILING

well, he probably does have a high ceiling if Bryan Scott wasn't around.there was always a chance he could beat out Scott for nickel snaps, but it hasn't happened and probably won't happen anytime soon.

I'm not sure where that was copy/pasted from but this was my take on him (from the FBG website):

The Bills landed their middle linebacker in the third round of last year's draft. He has ideal size for the position, but needs to be more physical at the point of attack. There were quite a few times last year when he seemed a step slow but part of that could be the adjustment from college to the pros. Sheppard should be a good fit for the new defense and have a chance to make more plays when lining up as the only linebacker inside. The biggest determining factor for his fantasy value will be whether he gets a chance to play in the team's nickel package or not. The team is very comfortable using veteran safety Bryan Scott as their nickel linebacker, but he is 33 years old and Sheppard figures to take over at some point. Given the situation, he's probably a LB4 type player with upside.
EDIT: He was ranked 50th in my final LB rankings and generally in a range between 40 and 56 by other staffers. There might have been more optimism on him early in the offseason, but not once it became clear that Scott was going to still be a factor.

That LB2 HIGH CEILING cut & paste is from Feb 1.Jene's early April update had Sheppard as a MATCHUP LB3.

Jene's mid-June update had Sheppard as a PRIORITY DEPTH / MATCHUP LB3.

From post #92 in the LB tiers thread

Wannstedt said that Barnett would move inside and replace Sheppard in subpackages.
We had plenty of time and info to see the Sheppard was not going to be a 3 down LB if we looked.

nobody that I remember had him in nickel, which can be a killer.

I believe it might have been said that on the chance he happens to develop into a nickel capable player he could have great upside, so they probably said to stash him, like they say stash everybody.

to be fair, some people play in deep leagues, dynasties, etc, and it's hard to give advice that covers everything.

ps

they were in nickel all game, which meant scott was in probably 90% of snaps, and whosis got about 13 snaps.

now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I saw him referenced occasionally as a hot sleeper, and was snickering to myself because I knew to beware from reading this board.

its more of Dynasty thing, picked him last yr because he was solid in the last half of the season; surprised he does have a bigger role

he's behind 33yo Bryan Scott (a former corner and safety) and 31yo Nick Barnett (a former safety). Not a huge surprise that they are better in coverage than a run-stuffing MLB.He's still early in his 2nd year as a pro and a guy like Scott is probably nearing the end of his career. I think Sheppard is still a pretty good dynasty prospect.Should get plenty of action this week against the 49ers so we'll see where he's at.
