BTTF 2017 : Scoobus wins World Series (1 Viewer)

Doug Fister's ERA last year 4.64. He is my # 7 starter.

Sonny Gray (5.69), Adam Wainwright (4.64), Mike Leake (4.69) are your top 3 starters.

Goooooooooood luck
WOOOOOOOF!!!

That said, I'd take Sonny Gray winning a one on one ERA battle with Fister this season if each has enough innings.

Just a handful of picks remaining...

Catcher: Wilson Ramos, Devin Mesoraco, Bruce Maxwell, Josh Phegley, Jesus Sucre

Ramos might be back in May, but he'll probably DH. Which is fine, as long as he eventually gets in 20ish games at catcher. Mesoraco is sorta catching in ST but taking it slow. I could get absolutely nothing from these two, but upside is a pair of above average bats at 250 AB each. I've got both A's backups, and rumors of Vogt spending time at DH could push this duo to 300 ABs between them. Sucre is not a lock to make the Rays, but the worse things look for Ramos, the more likely he gets to 50 ABs, so he's a good hedge.

First base: Joey Votto, Victor Martinez

Votto is my rock. Give me some bombs and a .400 OBP. If V-Mart gets 5 games in at 1B, he's a competent backup, and I can play Votto out of position in the outfield if needed.

Second base: Brad Miller, Raul Mondesi, Brett Lawrie

Miller hasn't really played 2nd in the majors. He's supposed to play there for the Rays this year, and if he doesn't, I'm screwed. Lawrie got cut which was certainly unexpected. He might sign with the Rays and play 2B, which could be good or bad for me. Mondesi was turrible last year but I'm hoping for 200 ABs of a good glove, even if he hits .190 in the process.

Shortstop: Carlos Correa, Alen Hanson, Wilmer Difo, Jorge Mateo

Please stay healthy, Carlos. There's no guarantee any of these other guys get time at SS. Maybe Brad Miller does - Duffy might start the year on the DL - and these guys can cover 2B when Miller slides over. Mondesi could also see time at SS, or play good enough D that sliding him over out of position won't kill me.

Third base: Justin Turner, Jhonny Peralta

Turner's already getting injections in his knee which is awesome. Jhonny should get 300 ABs somewhere and hopefully qualify at 3B, and maybe I'll get lucky and he also qualifies at SS. Difo could play here too, as could Lawrie if he ever gets a job.

Outfield (starters): Joc Pederson, Mark Trumbo, Keon Broxton

Well, that's a lot of risk. My park is a HR haven so I'm hoping these guys get on base a lot and hit a lot of bombs. Trumbo may be a primary DH but hoping he gets enough time in the OF to qualify. Pederson may sit against lefties so I'm hoping I have another glove somewhere who can fake CF.

Outfield (bench): Nori Aoki, Bradley Zimmer, JaCoby Jones, Peter Bourjos, Justin Ruggiano

Not a lot of depth here but Nori should get 300-400 ABs for the Astros and I might need every one of them. The rest are just dart throws. Jones could win the starting CF job for the Tigers. Bourjos could make the White Sox with TIlson injured. Ruggiano is the lefty masher the Giants need, but maybe not the one they'll keep.

Catcher: Russell Martin, Pedro Severino, Caleb Joseph, Chance Sisco, Luke Maile, Juan Graterol

This is fine, Martin has proven to be pretty durable and should be at least above average offensively, hopefully he remembers how to throw out runners this season. For the backups, Maile and Joseph should at least get enough AB's to spell Martin, while Severino and Sisco have good upside if they find a way into the lineup.

First Base: Hanley Ramirez, Steve Pearce, Dan Vogelbach, Rowdy Tellez, Jesus Aguilar

I had Hanley last year and he was really good, he should be really good again this year. I can't believe the Jays run Smoak out there too long and one of Pearce or Tellez could take over at some point, likely Pearce. Vogelbach looks like he's going to get every chance to start. Aguilar is the name of a player as well.

Second Base: Kolten Wong, Jose Reyes, Steve Pearce, Hernan Perez, Allen Cordoba

So, I deliberately took some super-utility types this time to give options but it doesn't look like Pearce will play any 2B for the Jays and Reyes may now be locked in at 3B for the Mets. Perez, will likely have not great defensive ratings at a bunch of positions this year. I'm fine with Wong here but I thought there may be more options for platoons/subs, etc...

Third Base: Josh Donaldson, Jose Reyes, Hernan Perez

Donaldson is obviously the best, Reyes will probably get more AB's than I anticipated but as outlined above, I kind of wish they were spread around the diamond more.

Shortstop: Matt Duffy, Jose Reyes, Allen Cordoba

I like Duffy, I think he should be solid with both the bat and the glove, Cordoba may or may not stick, Reyes shouldn't ever play SS again but likely will at some point. Some injury risk that I'm not real well covered here for.

Outfield: Carlos Gonzalez, Carlos Beltran, Matt Kemp, Steve Pearce, Hernan Perez, Jose Reyes, Adam Engel, Matt Szczur

This could be a disaster defensively and I don't know if Reyes plays here anymore (he is still working out there at times it seems), though I'm pretty sure Pearce and Perez will. In any case, I should get some good bats out of this group and hopefully Cargo can play a passable CF :oldunsure:

Starting Pitchers: Carlos Martinez, Danny Duffy, Carlos Rodon, Trevor Bauer, Drew Pomeranz, Steven Wright, AJ Griffin, Tyler Duffey, Bryan Mitchell, German Marquez, Mat Latos, Frankie Montas

I actually really like my first 4. All guys who have pitched a full season, so no innings limits to worry about, all guys who have upside/are pretty well regarded and if last year was their floor, that will be mostly okay. Beyond that, I feel like the Red Sox will probably screw me with Pomeranz and Wright and neither one will have a good IP/G by the end of the season and I don't know that any of my fliers will pan out, so might be cobbling at some point.

Relievers: Cody Allen, Brad Hand, Boone Logan, Mark Rzepcynski, Bryan Mitchell, Yusmeiro Petit, Dustin McGowan, Mat Latos, Lisalverto Bonilla, Kevin Gadea, Johnny Barbato all those starters who don't win starting jobs, like 10 other guys I took fliers on.

Basically grabbed a very good guy in Allen and a bunch of lefties, then hoping I can fill the back end from my late round fliers, who I didn't even bother entering in my spreadsheet and the guys who don't make it as starters and end up in bullpens or with partial seasons.

C - Sandy Leon, Andrew Susac, Chris Herrmann, Christian Vazquez
My plan was to get a catcher early and not worry about it. Last year I grabbed Posey in round 1 and liked the fact that I didn’t have to deal with scrapping together a catcher. Obviously that didn’t go as planned. However, getting this crew from round 14 and later, I can’t say that I am disappointed. Leon won’t hit as well as last year, but he was A/A/A on defense. MIL traded a very good reliever for Susac, so I imagine he will get plenty of PA’s. Herrmann raked last year, but ARI is going with three catchers, but there is a good chance that Herrmann plays some OF and CI which would be super slick. Vazquez is strictly Leon insurance with plus defense

1B - Ian Desmond, Kennys Vargas, Byun Ho Park, Billy Butler
I think Ian is going to rake in Coors. Would be nice if he plays some OF too, but I drafted him as my 1B. Always a good idea to corner the MIN DH. Maurer sucks so hopefully Vargas and/or Park play enough 1B. Butler is fat and a ######## and unemployed

2B - DJ LeMahieu
NL batting champ. Happy to have him at the top of the lineup.

3B - Todd Frazier
Excellent defense and hits bombs. Hopefully he bats closer to his 250 career average than his 225 from last year.

SS -  Tim Anderson
Don’t love him, but SS was super thin when I picked. Hope he plays slid defense and steals a bunch of bases.

OF - Yasiel Puig, Michael Brantley, Kevin Pillar, Jarrod Dyson, Mitch Haniger, Dylan Cozens
Great D in center with Pillar. Don’t care if he does much with the bat. I am really hoping for some bounceback from Puig and Brantley. Hopefully Dyson doesn’t play against lefties so I get his speed and a decent OBP. Haniger could be good. Cozens mashes, but probably won’t play.

UTIL - Daniel Descalso, Aaron Hill, Shawn O’Malley, Ivan DJesus
I think all these guys will be first guys off the bench for their teams. They all play all over the infield and put up decent defensive rankings in WIS. Don’t want any of them playing too much though, so if any of my starting IF goes down I am kinda screwed

SP - Clayton Kershaw, Gerrit Cole, Rick Porcello, Taijuan Walker, Jeremy Hellickson, Tyler Glasnow, Doug Fister, Colby Lewis, Max Fried, Tyler Jenkins, Michael Kopech, Cesar Valdez
Went SP in round 1, 2, and 3, so not sure I feel anything but happy with the top 3. Obviously need Kershaw's back to cooperate. I expect a little bounceback from Cole, and some regression from Porcello. I like the upside of Walker and Glasnow, and the improvement that Hellickson showed last year. Fister and Lewis are both too good of pitchers to stay unemployed too long. Fried, Jenkins, and Kopech are unlikely to pitch at all in the majors. Hoping that Beane saw something in Valdez and he makes the roster.

RP - Addison Reed, Carter Capps, Dan Otero, Santiago Casilla, Carson Smith, JP Howell, Wade LeBlanc, Fernando Abad, Joba Chamberlain, Ryan Pressly, Enrique Burgos, Luke Hochevar, Daniel Coulombe, Dalier Hinojosa, Aaron Barrett, Tyler Webb, Jorge de la Rosa
Who the #### knows. Have probably too many injured guys looking to bounceback (Capps, Smith, Hochevar, Barrett), but if two of them come back to where they were, well, that’s good I guess. LeBlanc and De La Rosa hopefully get a few spot starts. The rest, who knows.

i show everyone fully in at 50 picks, except for scbf, who is at 47.

Draft is over! Well done everyone.

599 batters drafted; 598 pitchers drafted.

Catcher: Jonathan Lucroy, Robinson Chirinos, Chris Gimenez, Brett Nicklaus

Have Lucroy and both his backups, so unless Texas trades for a catcher I should be ok on PAs. Gimenez is a flier, might platoon in Min.

1st base: Paul Goldschmidt, Josh Bell, John Jaso, Matt Adams

Dont like taking a 1B in round 1, but Goldschmidt should rake. Bell maybe plays some OF which would be nice.

2nd base: Devon Travis, Darwin Barney, Joey Wendle

Travis is good when healthy but rarely healthy. Barney should back him up if he goes down.

Shortstop: Alcides Escobar, Jordy Mercer

Probably waited too long on SS, but ended up grabbing 2 starters, maybe one can act as trade bait if others fall short.

3rd base: Maikel Franco, Adonis Garcia

Hopefully last year was a sophomore slump and Franco's ready to go this year with an improved lineup. Garcia isn't very good but he's projected to start for Atl.

Outfield: Giancarlo Stanton, JD Martinez, Shin-Soo Choo, Michael Conforto, Charlie Tilson, ICHIRO

Will mash if healthy, but all 3 are quite injury prone. Have to worry about who will play center as well but you never know how WIS will rate people. Looking for a Conforto bounce back.

CA: Yasmandi Grandal, Roberto Perez, Ramon Cabrera, Mitch Garver.        Should have enough PAs and hopefully get some offence from Grandal.

1B: Eric Thames, Matt Holiday, Yonder Alonso.                                               Should have extra PAs and a good bat on the bench.

2B: Dustin Pedroia, Kiki Hernandez, Ian Happ, Willie Calhoun.                       If Pedroia gets hurt, I’m screwed.

3B: Jose Ramirez, Cheslor Cuthbert.                                                                Same goes for Ramirez

SS: Jorge Polanco, Jose Iglesias.                                                                     Eh

UT: Wilmar Flores, Ronald Torreyes.                                                                   Any games played at 2B or 3B is a blessing.

OF: Andrew McCutchen, Kole Calhoun, Denard Span, Andrew Toles, Brandon Guyer, Mallex Smith, Tyler O’Neil, Jose Martinez.

Should be able to get 3.5+ OF from these guys

SP: Jon Lester, Johnny Cueto, Jameson Taillon, Tyler Anderson, Ricky Nolasco, Ty Blach, Chad Green Robert Stephenson, Daniel Mengden.

Barring injury I hope to get 5 full time starters

RP: Grant Dayton, Koji Uehara, Brandon Maurer, Neftali Feliz, Andrew Chafin, Jose Urena.

Somehow, I didn’t draft enough RPs.

Minors: Stephen Gonsalves, Tyler Wilson, Adam Plutko, Josh Fields, Carlos Estevez, Sean Gilmartin, Jumbo Diaz, Deolis Gurrera, Nick Pivetta, Lucas Sims.

Any innings I get from these guys will be a plus.

Starters: Sonny Gray, Adam Wainwright, Mike Leake, Shelby Miller, Jose Berrios, Luis Severino, Chad Kuhl, Clayton Richard

A complete boom or bust strategy, as everyone except Kuhl is a bounce back buy. They all have either histories of being very good or the talent to be very good. Except for Richard, he's awful.

Relievers: Derek Law, Mychal Givens, Stephen Bowman, a bunch more

Relievers are a crap shoot, hopefully enough do well to leave me with an ok bullpen.

Catcher: Evan Gattis, Cameron Rupp, Eric Fryer, Kyle Higashioka

Went for a 2nd catcher a little early in hopes that Gattis/Rupp will cover all my PAs and give me a little pop at the bottom of the lineup.

First base: Brandon Belt, C.J. Cron, Rhys Hoskins

Not sure if Belt was worth it in round 7 given the depth at 1B, but I really like his OBP in front of all the power I drafted.

Second base: Neil Walker, Danny Espinosa, TJ Rivera

Walker is a bit of a question mark coming off an injury but at least I have another starter here in Espinosa.

Shortstop: Trevor Story, Luis Sardinas, Erick Aybar

Story is boom or bust but felt worth the gamble when I took him. In the past I've drafted lots of real-life utility guys and they end up with 200 PAs and D- range, so this year I'm hoping either Espinosa or one of the awful Padre shortstops can fill that role.

Third base: Nolan Arenado, Ryan McMahon, Will Middlebrooks

If Arenado gets hurt, I'm screwed and I quit.

Outfield: Jackie Bradley, Curtis Granderson, Hyun Soo Kim, Albert Almora, Robbie Grossman, Trayce Thompson, Austin Jackson, Derek Fisher, Aneury Tavarez

A decent group for not prioritizing OF real high in the draft. Kim may platoon but I should have enough bench PA to cover that.

Starting pitcher: Kenta Maeda, Aaron Nola, Joe Ross, Jharel Cotton, Clay Buchholz, Edinson Volquez, Nate Karns, Mike Clevinger, Austin Voth, Henry Owens, Justin Nicolino.

I maybe gambled too much on IP early on, but hopefully covered my ### with Volquez, who I'm sure I'll have to use even though he's my #6. Could really use breakout seasons from Nola and Cotton.

Relief pitcher: Cam Bedrosian, AJ Ramos, Robbie Ross, Junichi Tazawa, Ian Krol, Bryan Shaw, Zach Putnam, Tony Sipp, Mike Minor, Shawn Tolleson, Buddy Boshers, Silvino Bracho, Jake Petricka, Rubby De La Rosa.

I didn't start drafting them until late and probably didn't get very good value because I didn't put much research time in those rounds. But at least I bought a lot of lottery tickets.

Overall: I really like my offense, a lot of power with some OBP at the top and good depth behind it. Pitching I'm far less confident in, but if I hit on a few gambles I could have a really good team.

I drafted 10 of these guys last year. I'm sorry, you're ####ed.

Bryant, yelich, gregorius, s perez, b Phillips, pence, melky, kendrys, Kendrick, jankowski, owings, ruiz, bethancourt, revere, greg Garcia, rene rivera, r liriano, t beckham, r weeks,              e Cabrera, d smith, erceg, g allen, murton - 24 batters

a sanchez, moore, samardzija, hammel, kennedy, h Santiago, asher, gossett, b Norris, m appel, p Clemens, kendricks, z lee, c lee, j gant, s romano, m banuelos

strop, bush, brach, dull, robles, Vincent, neshek, scheppers, j acquino - 26 pitchers

no idea on this one, all I know is every year 2 of my pitchers die in spring training and then I usually have 1 decent arm, 1 cripple and some crapola.  this year I have 6 bolded SP that threw over 150 innings last year, appear to have set jobs and a good track record.  they are not aces, but sanchez can be good and the others I hope play the season.

happy with my bolded 8 everyday lineup, Phillips is my risk, but I think Atlanta trots him out every day.  grabbed Kendrick with the hope he gets 300-400 PAs and qualifies at 2b to help.  I figure ruiz and rivera to get 200-250 PAs to use as perez' backup.  no idea about the other bench fodder.

I drafted only 7 RP with track records, scheppers and acquino I hope win jobs.  I took 11 eleven extra SP with the hopes 1 or more get some usable RP innings.

I should have prepped more before the draft because my first five rounds or so were on a wing and a prayer.   I'm pretty much OK with what happened afterwards.  Here's hoping for good fortunes in the IP department.

Loaded at OF and bullpen. Need Moncada and/or JP Crawford to rack up infield ABs or I'm hurting there.
Moncada is going to be :moneybag:  for you, and Crawford should be, too.

Only thing keeping Moncada from the everyday 2B job now is a career utility IF (Yolmer Sanchez).

WIS BBTF 2017 -- New Orleans Pelicans outlook

BATTERS

Catchers: Stephen Vogt, Tyler Flowers, Geovany Soto, Stuart Turner, Trevor Brown (AAA)

Even missing a few weeks to injury, Vogt got 532 PAs last season. He might catch a little less and play 1B more in 2017 -- just as long as he racks up PAs. Flowers and Soto are both starting catchers for right now (Soto as a non-roster invite). Stuart Turner is supposed to make the Reds' 25-man as the 3rd catcher ... we'll see. Brown seems to be a versatile guy only an injury away from relevancy.

First base: Adrian Gonzalez, Mitch Moreland, Trey Mancini (AAA), Clint Robinson

Gonzalez should get at least 500 decent (not elite) PAs. Moreland should be the long half of 1B platoon in Boston ... he should love the Green Monster. Mancini's probably starting out in AAA, but is supposed to come up before the All-Star break -- he can (sorta) play RF, too. Robinson is supposed to make the Nationals 25-man -- best WIS case for him is a decent bench bat.

Second base: Ryan Schimpf, Brandon Drury, Yolmer Sanchez, Adam Frazier, Arismendy Alcantara, Michael Martinez

Schimpf and Drury are pretty much competing for my squad's 2B slot. Both have pop ... Schimpf is a better defender and Drury has better BA and OBP. Neither guy has yet played an entire MLB season at 2B, so here's hoping for a break with at least one of them. Yolmer Sanchez is actually listed as the current starting 2B for the White Sox, which was a big surprise -- but he's just keeping the seat warm for Yoan Moncada. Frazier backs up the IF spots with a decent bat. Alcantara and Martinez are just potential IF PAs.

Shortstop: Trea Turner, Adam Frazier, Arismendy Alcantara, Michael Martinez, Chad Pinder (AAA), Charlie Culberson (AAA)

Really need Trea Turner to stay healthy, keep hitting, and rack up 600+ PAs. If Turner goes down, one or more of the aforementioned depth infielders will have to step into the breach. Pinder will start in AAA, but seems to have a path to at least bench-infielder playing time -- we'll see. Culberson got 68 PAs for the Dodgers last season, but he's only a 50th-round flyer for me.

Third base: Yangervis Solarte, Conor Gillaspie, Rob Segedin (AAA)

Solarte was a nice surprise bat last season for me even in an injury-riddled season -- I'm happy to take him on again and hope he can keep his BA and SLG numbers steady. Gillaspie is an OK hitter who seems to get 200+ PAs every season no matter what his situation looks like in March. Segedin looks like a promising bat, but needs help to get PAs for the Dodgers. Frazier and Drury may also get 20+ 3B starts in 2017.

Right field: Nelson Cruz, Scott Schebler, Mark Canha, Trey Mancini (AAA), Clint Robinson

Cruz has been very steady with his power numbers ... hope this isn't the year he suddenly turns old. He'll DH a lot, but has easily qualified in the OF every season for a while now. Schebler is platooning in Cincinnati, but he should get the bigger share of ABs as a lefty. Canha seems to have power potential, but hasn't yet put it all together for the A's -- he'll be the short half of a RF platoon in Oakland.

Center field: Lorenzo Cain, Roman Quinn (AAA), Trea Turner

Really gambling on Cain's health here. When available, Cain is great in CF. Otherwise, I'd need Quinn to come up a little sooner than he'd predicted to (~All-Star Break), and then for him to stick and hit. Turner played a lot of CF for the Nationals last season, but if I have to use him there in WIS, my infield is in trouble.

Left field: Stephen Piscotty, Scott Schebler, Mark Canha, Trey Mancini (AAA), Clint Robinson

Looking for Piscotty to stay healthy and keep hitting. He actually has some room to improve as a hitter. Same backups as in RF.

PITCHERS

Starters: Chris Sale (L), Sean Manaea (L), Chris Tillman, Gio Gonzalez (L), Yovani Gallardo, Chase Anderson, Tim Adleman, Tom Koehler, Ross Stripling, Kris Medlen, Brian Johnson (L)

The first seven guys listed are projected to be in their club's Opening Day rotation -- Koehler, too, though he's got a foot on a banana peel and isn't rocking spring training. Needing Chris Sale to continue to be a 200-inning rock for this unit. Hope Manaea takes that next step and pitches like a true MLB #2 -- and doesn't get limited to 150 IP or something. Tillman is hurt now, but hopefully can return in April and still approach 180 IP. Gio has lost some velocity, but has had a nice spring so far -- can pitching coach Mike Maddux teach Gio to rely more on the curve and change-up? Koehler eats innings, nothing flashy. Gallardo, Anderson, and Adleman are each projected as #4 real-life SPs -- hoping for at least one to be a usable WIS back-end starter. Stripling starts in AAA this year, but pitched 100 IP and got 14 decisions for the Dodgers last season -- maybe they call him up early when they need a sixth or seventh SP. Atlanta's got two forty-somethings in the rotation -- can Medlen shake off the Tommy Johns and do a little something this year? Brian Johnson is an SP lottery ticket for a team that burns through starters.

Bullpen: Zach Britton (L), Ryan Madson, Sammy Solis (L), Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard, Joely Rodriguez (L), Raul Alcantara, Chris Heston, Luis Avilan (L), Tom Layne (L), Michael Tonkin, Hoby Milner (L)

Every one of these relievers is set to make the 25-man to open the season. Britton was other-worldly last season and will return to Earth -- but even a doubling of his ERA would yield a very good closer. Madson was a decent closer himself last season, not amazing but workmanlike. Alcantara and Heston (to a lesser extent) could be in line for starting slots, but project as long relievers right out of the box. The rest are a grab-bag of middle relief guys, some with decent track records (Clippard, Avilan, Storen) and some totally unproven (Rodriguez, Tonkin, Milner). Out of these 12 names, would like to hit on six of them ("hit" = "being usable in WIS").
