per Adam Schefter:

Bucs S Tanard Jackson has been suspended indefinitely without pay for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

I heard this rumor two weeks prior to Opening Day from someone at the team...was hoping it was just that. Rumor is it was the white stuff.

I heard the rumor at the beginning of the year and then Joebucsfan or somebody tweeted it at the beginning of the season. I wonder wtf he played 2 games and it took so long?

Must be a process with the league and legal. I had honestly forgotten about it.

Interesting quote from Mark Dominik. Jackson was scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the 2010 season; now they'd probably have to eat his salary.

"We know that he is suspended for the rest of the year. And his contract will roll over, which means he will not be a free agent."

It's a tough loss, and if it is the white stuff, getting Jackson clean and healthy should be his and the Bucs only priority, as addiction is no fun, for anyone involved...

It's a fairly big loss. Tanard allows the Bucs to take more chances, and he can be the 4th linebacker at times. As far as what individual players mean to the entire defense, I would've put him behind Geno Hayes, Gerald McCoy and Talib. Maybe even Quincy Black. But he's an impact player.

Will Bucs go with veteran Piscitelli or a youngster safety? My immediate reaction to the news that the Bucs will lose Tanard Jackson for the season for a violation of the substance-abuse policy was that Tampa Bay has to hope backup safety Sabby Piscitelli has improved after a rough season in 2009.But after some thought, it became clear that it isn't a given Piscitelli gets the nod. The Bucs are intrigued by special-teams ace Corey Lynch and rookie prospect Cody Grimm, both of whom had bright moments in the preseason and will likely garner consideration to start in place of Jackson.Piscitelli seems the likeliest option given his experience and ability to play both strong and free safety. But the potential of both Lynch and Grimm is hard to ignore, and the Bucs saw playmaking ability from both of them during the preseason. Grimm has risen to second on the depth chart behind Jackson at free safety and continues to make quite the impression on special teams. Lynch has shown he has a nose for the football with his adeptness at blocking kicks and his two-interception performance in the preseason.General manager Mark Dominik, during his announcement of the Jackson suspension, said coach Raheem Morris would use the next couple of days to mull a decision on who will start in place of Jackson. And truthfully, maybe that's the right course of action. Because the more you think about, the more you realize the answer here is not at all obvious. But here's something that isn't debatable: Jackson, a tremendous safety, has put his team in a very tough position with what are, frankly, very selfish actions. We'll soon see whether the Bucs they can overcome it all.
I heard pretty good things about Grimm during TC.

I heard it was marijuana that was the "substance".

Now, I know it's not fair, but the NFL is going to suspend someone for smoking dope for a year, and yet Braylon Edwards gets a DUI, bailed out of prison, 3 days later is going to suit and play.

Apples and oranges I know. But the NFL needs to lay down some more appropriate and timely punishment to avoid the appearance of a double standard.
