Bucs DeWayne White. Emerging pass rusher? (1 Viewer)

DL DeWayne White has 3 sacks and 2 Forced fumbles in 3 games, and theres talk of him bumping Spires out of his LE spot on the bucs depth chart. I'm wondering what kind of numbers we can expect from him going forward this season.

There has been talk about this happening for three seasons. Spires doesn't get the credit he deserves opposite the more flashy Simeon Rice and White has never been solid enough in run support to force the switch. The Bucs have had some health problems at defensive tackle early in the season and DeWayne White is getting a few more situational snaps with Spires moving inside to tackle. That's happened fairly often in the past but White is likely to stay a situational player for now. If you hear that Spires will align inside more often, though, White is definitely worth rostering, especially in big play leagues. He knows how to get to the quarterback.

He's 13th among DE's (weekly average) in Zealots:

I don't have any evidence, but as a Bucs homer I've noticed his role increase a bit from previous seasons. As mentioned above, don't expect his tackles to increase greatly, but he's doing a good job thus far in getting after the Quarterback.

I'm a huge fan of White. Every time he gets on the field, he seems to produce where ever they put him. In 2004 he was great as an interior pass rusher. He just hasn't had a full opportunity yet, but he will next year. He's a UFA and either Rice or Spires, both well in to the wrong side of 30, will be gone, or he'll be starting somewhere else. Definintely a guy for the future to store if you have a roster spot, I have in one of my dynasty leagues.

A couple good articles on him

Does White get more playing time because of the McFarland Trade?
I don't think so. I'm not certain, but I don't think McFarland has played much in passing situations recently. This week, against the Bengals, Ellis Wyms proved he could get to the quarterback from the undertackle position. White has already been contributing in a situational role this year, I don't think he gets more time unless Wyms proves to be a one hit wonder.

Thanks, I don't get a lot of Tampa games, so I don't know what he's been up to exactly.
"We knew we had to go after Carson Palmer," said pass rush specialist Ellis Wyms, who registered both of the Bucs' sacks. "This defense is about rush and coverage, rush and coverage, and we had that."The got it by changing things up a bit. Instead of sending their pass rushers directly into the line, they often had them work off stunts in which the linemen loop around each other. They also changed their lineup a bit. Dewayne White, who usually works as an end, often worked from an inside position. Wyms, who usually works inside, often lined up outside.
I don't know what to make of that, other than to think that the situation is pretty cloudy right now...

I wouldn't make too much out of it. T2 teams usually have athletic defensive tackles and expect the front four to provide the bulk of the pass rush so they'll sometimes use stunts to mix up the looks, both on rush and passing downs. My guess would be that the Bucs employed more than the usual number of stunts because the Bengal OL was in flux all day (Steinbach originally started at center with rookie Whitworth at guard, then inexperienced Ghiaciuc at center and Whitworth at tackle after Levi Jones went out). Both White and Wyms are veteran Bucs at this point and both have played both end and tackle in past seasons. I'll be interested in what the Buc homers think, but I don't think White gets a big bump in value. Wyms certainly gets big value in DT specific leagues after the deal.
