Bucs QB Freeman leaves with thumb injury (1 Viewer)

Josh Freeman left Saturday's preseason game with a right thumb injury.

Freeman was originally diagnosed with a bruise. He was getting the thumb taped before, and there are conflicting reports about whether he ended up in the locker room for X-rays. Either way, Freeman is officially done for the night after completing 2-of-5 passes for 21 yards. Hold your breath, Bucs fans. Aug. 21 - 7:57 pm et

Bucs QB Josh Freeman is out until the regular season opener after fracturing the tip of his right throwing thumb.Beat writer Stephen Holder "guesses" that's an optimistic estimate from the Bucs rather than a conservative one. Jason LaCanfora, though, confirms that Freeman is expected to practice and play by Week 1. The Bucs won't want to rush Freeman back as the injury could affect his throwing motion if not fully healed. He falls just short of QB2 status in 12-team fantasy leagues. Source: Stephen Holder on Twitter

Ouch, this sucks! I sure hope he's back by Week 1, I have him as my QB2 in one of my dynasty leagues and this could also affect Mike Williams if it ends up hurting his throwing motion. Sure hope he heals quickly.

I hear you - I picked up both those guys in a dynasty start up this week. Obviously I'm looking more ahead, but I still think they can surprise this year.

Upgrade: nobody

Downgrade: well, nobody. it's not like Freeman or the rookie WRs were going to start for you week 1 anyways.

Really bad situation for Tampa. Freeman needed these reps to gel with rookie receivers and get preseason work as the starter. It definitely hurts his progress. I'm not saying it ruins the entire season, but these are bad weeks to miss for a guy who needs the work and has promising options at receiver. The chemistry that could have been built in simulated game situations won't be there.

I'm not a big fan of preseason, really. It's just a necessary evil, but Freeman's development is exactly why it's necessary. Even if this was just a "growth" year for him, with more expectations in the future, it hurts the growth.

I have Mike Williams penciled into at least one of my lineups.
