Bucs release Meshawn (1 Viewer)

Fantasy implication:If he is deactivated and unable to sign with other teams, would it be appropriate to allow Keyshawn owners a free replacement, as you would in the case of an injury to a player?
Yes, all they have to do is drop Keyshawn, and they can use that roster slot on any FA.
I should've been more clear. Assume that the league limits the number of free WW pickups. In the scenario you describe, many leagues would charge a transaction fee for replacing a player with a WW pickup, unless the player you are replacing is injured. Is this a special case that warrants treatment similar to that an injured player would receive in such leagues?

I'm not sure how we got to the second page without asking this...So what kind of impact does everyone see this having on Jurevicius' fantasy value the rest of the season? Is he healed up enough to come back and be the consistent #2 as the Bucs try and run the table for a playoff spot?

Wow. Huge news.Notice how many FBGs are reading this thread? Well over 100 right now. No better service out there for providing up-to-the-minute reports on football news. Thanks for it!

He sure didn't look good the other day.Bucs are thin at wideout...if they are planning on running the table, I can't imagine placing Key on the bench is a good start.

What a ####ing season. I can't wait for it to end.

wow...big news. hehe and it has everyone here interested. "159 User(s) currently reading this topic" at the time of this post
have him in my espn league -- says he's owned in 98.4% of leagues...so there's a lot of us trying to figure out if we bench or cut him  ... starting to sound like the latter.

Nothing new really, but from the St. Pete Times...

Keyshawn Johnson was deactivated for the remainder of the season by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today in an apparent personal conflict between head coach Jon Gruden and the Pro Bowl receiver. Johnson has four years remaining on a $56-million contract, which he restructured this season. He will not be available to play for any other team this season but would likely become a free agent at the end of the year. Johnson and Gruden clashed repeatedly almost as soon as the Bucs hired the coach. Earlier this season Johnson's agent, Jerome Stanley, told the Times that Gruden was not utilizing his star receiver correctly. During one five-game stretch this season Johnson caught just 12 passes.

If a fantasy owner wants to carry KeShawn, it would be no different than carrying Terrell Davis or Barry Sanders. It's going to cost you a roster spot.

Just got this from kffl:Buccaneers | K. Johnson Released - from www.KFFL.comTue, 18 Nov 2003 10:30:15 -0800ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released WR Keyshawn Johnson. So is he released or deactivated.? (also just dropped SOD and grabbed JJ in my league . . . )

Any links yet. This wold be huge news. I just don't see the Bucs doing that unless something has happened behind the scenes. Could this possibly be inactive as in injury instead of "Deactivated". You think Gruden saw my post on not being able to handle the Volatile team
yesterday i was listening to Fox radio about how Gruden is giving certain players WAY too much rope to do what they wanted. Only took one day to correct that didnt it? I wonder what this will do to the rest of the team...What does everyone think about Joe and his playability the rest of the season?

More from Gruden's press-conference yesterday...

He vowed to shake up his lineup to avoid the fouls that have led to slow starts in three straight losses."To me, that's a lack of concentration," he said. "Whether it's complacency, lack of details, whatever it may be, that's intolerable. It's totally unacceptable and intolerable, and frankly, I'm disgusted with it."
Gruden said he was considering ways to improve discipline."You can levy fines, you can lengthen practice, you can have one-on-one conversations, you can scream and yell and sometimes replace players who commit consistent penalties," Gruden said. "All those will be considered.
Guess he wasn't kidding.Maybe this is what they needed...a big shakeup. :(

KFFL is a little late to the party. The original report was that he was released, but Lenny P quickly clarified that. He's been deactivated the rest of the season.Cheers

sssshhhhh.....keep it down guys. I'm trying to trade Meshawn before my league gets ahold of the news...............

with my luck, if i cut him, gruden will change his mind next week, and it will have been a one-week scare tactic.i doubt a team would say it was going to deactivate a player for the rest of the year and then not follow through on it, but there's a chance, right? i mean, they're planning to deactivate him for each of their remaining games, not for the whole season all at once.is this a possibility?

Keyshawn is being interviewed on WFAN/YES network right now. He says he didn't miss any practices, went home to see his kids like he does every Sunday night. He says he was contacted by the Bucs GM - he will be deactivated for the rest of the year. He is "clueless" as to why.

For some reason, I don't believe him.

Dude's got a $56m contract...only 3 TDs so far this year and he can't keep his mouth Shut!!!...what a head case...

After Keyshawn's little love fest for Parcell's a few weeks ago, I won't be surprised if he signs in Dallas next season.

I agree, but he had 1 catch in the last 9 weeks. How effective could he be?
Well JJ had been sidelined with an injury for the first 8 of those weeks as I recall. He only was activated like 2 weeks ago. I don't see anyone else on that team besides JJ who can step in and replace Key.McCardell's already high FF value (as related to his draft spot) just got bumped a bit since he's now the first and second option in the passing game (aside from RBs).

Funny. I'm on a conference call with 2 other owners now. Who have alrady talked to 1 and 2 each. This has spread very quickly. There pissed i picked up Joe two weeks ago.

I for one am Very happy about this move.I mean something is up, but I hated Key from day one and I never wanted him on the Bucs. A slow overpaid WR that never had good hands in Tampa. The only thing he did was block well... oh yeah and talk and make a fool out of himself time after time.Hope to find out why... but I am happy he is history!

I can't believe the Bucs cut one of the WR's in the game.Or whatever he said about himself a few years back. :P Most overrated WR in the game.

I think him and T.O. have the same problem. They have a passion for the game but started to believe all the hype. They continue to say "Give me the ball" yet only catch the damn thing (wild guess coming) around 40% of the time. I think a coach/owner will put up with a players big mouth as long as they produce. Johnson has not produced therefore he is gone.

Right...If they released Keyshawn today, the remainder of his pro rated signing bonus would accelerate into this year's cap, and they don't have the $8 million in cap room for that to happen. As a result, they would have to cut other players to make that move.By deactivating him, they are essentially paying him to stay away from the team, but won't cut him until the offseason when they can properly plan for the cap implications. Also, by waiting until mid summer next year, they can spread the cap hit over two seasons.Cheers
But don't most roster bonuses occur on March 1? Wouldn't they want to cut him before they have to shell out 2 Mil? Aren't roster (not signing) bonuses amortized in the year they were given not over the two years (or life of contract) like signing bonuses?

We'll see who they try and trade to. Lord knows the Bucs need all the draft picks they can get with what they gave up for Gruden.I hope the Lions don't try and trade for him unless he's like a 3rd round pick. The Lions need to start focusing on defense.

so what does it get them to deactivate him as oppossed to just cutting him? I don't even know what deactivate means, is he still on the roster? Does it change the cap implications or is it just to keep him from playing for someone else?
If you check the gamebook you will see that a handfull of players are listed as inactive for the game. Perhaps you've heard in the pregame shows where so-and-so will be inactive that day because his injury isn't is well as was hoped. On the roster, not dressed, benched for the day.___________________________________________________"No man stands taller than when he stoops to help a 'Skins fan"

Good for Gruden!! I only hope more teams follow the example of the Bucs and the Browns and start making life not so pleasant for more crybabies.

I'm just glad Gruden is doing something to shake things up. None of us really know what's going on in that locker room. Keyshawn is a good WR, but maybe he was being more of a distraction than any of us have thought. I don't like the idea of taking a cap hit since TB has done a good job of managing the cap with Rich McKay at the helm. I'd like to see them get something of value since they traded some 1st rounders to get him a few years ago. Whatever the reason, this TB homer sides with Gruden. I have faith in him based on his track record in Oakland and last year in TB. Dude knows what he's doing.

Now did he say "I'm clueless as to why I got cut."Or did the interviewer say: "Why did you get cut?"And Keyshawn said: "I'm clueless."Because that, I'd buy.

CBS Sportsline quote from Keyshawn...News: The Buccaneers have deactivated Johnson for the rest the season. The team will likely try to trade him in the offseason. When contacted by Sportsline.com's Jay Glazer, he responded, "I'm not even in town right now. I'm traveling." Johnson also added, "For what? What are they doing that for? What have I done? I didn't do anything. I haven't done anything, like I've always done, but play with passion when I step in between those white lines."It will be interesting to find out the real reason...

Well, I think Keyshawn played a huge part in Tampa's Super Bowl win last season; statistically he had some really, really good numbers in that game and came up with many critical first-down catches while the Bucs attempted to hold on to the ball.I say this as a Vikings fan (0-4 in the big one). It would pain me to thank Keyshawn for anything, but if helped get the Vikes a ring...I think be able to do so.Regardless, I understand your interest in getting something for him. Not sure, but trading him has not come up, does anybody know if Keyshawn has a no-trade clause in his contract? The BlueOnion

ever since Coach traded the #1 pick away for $1,000,000 or something like that i have not liked his prospects. GDB lady GM's traded away a pick for money. this was back when he was the #1 pick and Craig T. Nelson would have had a solid team... but they traded away the pick. :wall: :wall:

You know, he was a distraction...but the Bucs fans running off and saying they are glad he's gone should really think twice about it. Key made some MAJOR catches for this team last year and was a big part of their title run. He's not going to be replaced as easily as you all think. JJ is a nice player, but not as good, and now the third WR on the depth chart is Karl ####ing Williams. From a pure talent standpoint, this is not a good move. But Gruden said he was tired of this #### and felt like something had to be done. I don't mind the shakeup, but don't kid yourself and act like he doesn't matter, because that's not true. Maybe this team needed to be slapped across the face, but they are ultra-thin at WR.

Why on Earth would you trade for him? Even if you thought you were getting a steal you would inherit his contract (but not his signing bonus). The Eagles couldn't even get a 2nd round pick for Jeremiah Trotter when he was franchised (and teams could basically work out their own contract for him).Any team with half of a brain would wait until he was a free agent since all of the big money will presumably go to Owens.Oh wait, you said Lions, never mind.
