Buffalo Bills sign Giants OLB Kawika Mitchell (1 Viewer)

Mitchel is one of those guys that gives me pause. Was really a non factor in the league until the 2nd half of last season. Not sure another change of scenery and bigger expectations are a recipe for success for that guy.

I'm assuming they felt he was a much cheaper alternative then to try and get into the Lance Briggs sweepstakes. Any ideas of what he should expect salary wise? Any Giants fans care to help me get excited? about football.....lol

It's going to be hard to compare what he gets in this free agency with contracts from prior years; because of the huge inflation we're seeing this offseason.

If he signed this quickly, my Bills probably overpaid him.

LOL, so true, so true. Kinda reminds me of the Jeff Posey signing a few years back.\ TD called him at 12:01.

I'm sure our collective jaws will hit the floor when his contract numbers come out, but with so many teams so far under the cap, most of the contracts we're going to be seeing will be ridiculous. Unfortunately, "overpaying" is "fair market value" this year.

Lance Briggs is going to get HUGE money. Assuming Mitchell was had for quite a bit less, I think this is a great signing as it strengthens the Bills defense, brings a veteren into the locker room, brings a SB ring to Buffalo and allows a little more money to be used on other needs (ie TE, WR).

I would be careful touting "brings a SB ring" as an asset. The league has a long history of overpaying marginal contributors from the reigning Super Bowl champs.

If you notice the beginning of that sentence, it said the positives were assuming Mitchell was had for quite a bit less than Briggs gets. Experience is experience and even role player's experience is good. Besides whether or not they overpay for it, experience is still a good asset.

Mitchell re-invented himself last year. He showed coverage skills he didn't before, regained the physical presence he had in 2005 and was even capable in pass rush. It'll be interesting to see if 2006 was just a down year for him. If he plays as he did for New York, he's a solid pick up for the Bills' scheme as he'll allow them to get Angelo Crowell into space more often. still, as Woodrow noted, pursuing the marginal talent off teams that went deep into the playoffs isn't always the best idea.

Nice reversal of fortune for a guy that didn't see much interest this time last year.

5 years for $17.5 million ($5 million guaranteed). Link

Looks like a bargain to me.
Wow, that's a total steal in today's market IMO. I was concerned that they were going to pay him like a star. They don't need him to be a star at all, they just need a solid LB to go play the Strong side. Crowell can get moved back to WLB now and Poz will be back and manning MLB. Dig and Ellison didn't quite cut it as starters but make excellent depth. Now if they can just get a nice run stuffing DT I'd be pretty happy already. With Ko Simpson coming back this year at safety and getting some CBs healthier, the defense should be a lot better as long as they get that big DT up front.

IMO, the two biggest offseason needs still are a big DT and #2 WR. A pass catching TE would be nice too, but it's not as urgent to me as it is to others. If the Bills could get that #2 WR in free agency, could it open the door to the Bills trading up to get Ellis or Dorsey? That would be pretty awesome.

Yeah it's almost worth paying this soley to get Crowell back to the weak side.

A bargain? $5mm per season for a fringe NFL starter? Seriously? Wow...talk about rose colored glasses.
17.5/5 = $3.5 million
:goodposting: Too much airplane glue this morningSolid signing for the Bills
Fringe NFL starter? 2 sacks and a fumble recovery for a td in the post season too was a big part of the Giants, while he may not be great, I think he is a very rock solid starter to pair with Crowell and Poz. And at 5/17.5 it makes it all the better. Stroud is in for an interview which makes me wonder is a deal already in place? and he's here for a physical?

I'm not much for post season wonder boys, but Mitchell had 85 tackles and 4.5 sacks last year during the regular season. That's not too bad. Of course, there will be a question as to whether those numbers were inflated because the fantastic defensive line made life easier for the LBers, but it's not a bad deal for him at all.

Jason, Marcus Stroud is still on the Jags and is allowed to work out a trade. He is in Buffalo now. Is he allowed to meet with teams in person? Or does this maybe mean he is taking a physical meaning a deal has been in place? He's been here for the past 3 hours according to someone inside the building.

Stroud would be an incredibile addition, assuming full health. The man is a monster.
Wait, an interview with team officials or the Buffalo media? And I'm not sure what I would be willing to give up for him. I hope we don't have to trade our 2nd rounder.

He had 2 100+ tackle seasons with the KC defense, so he can get it done regardless of surrounding cast.I don't expect him to be a superstar, or even a star, but he can definitely be a good player for the Bills. And this is definitely not a bad deal for that type of player.

I'd give up a 3rd for Stroud anyday.
 Me too. That would be two huge pieces to our defensive puzzle and not really over paying for either.Plus imagine all the players we will be getting back from injury this year too. Our "D" might be pretty good this year (reguardless if we get Stroud or not).

Nice contract for Mitchell.

I read an article where someone said there are rumblings that Stroud's leg injuries have really hurt his effectiveness and he is nowhere near the player he was. I would stay far away if I were the Bills.

I love this deal. Not only did we get Mitchell for a reasonable contract, but it also leaves us room to extend Crowell's deal this off-season. Assuming we can get that done too, we will have a fantastic LB corps for the next few seasons.

I wouldn't have minded keeping the LB corp the Bills had, assuming they could improve at DT and keep some blockers off of them so they could make plays. That being said, they upgraded a little, and improved their depth at the position, which was shown last year to be critical. Good move by the Bills. Add a solid DT and this will be a good D next year. Now if only the O can stay on the field.......

Having Kawika and Angelo on the outside is going to speed up Poz's learning curve. Crowell is gonna be free to Make plays whenever and wherever he can now as well
