In an abrupt about-face, Rams coach Scott Linehan is going with Gus Frerotte as his starting quarterback Sunday against Arizona and benching injured Pro Bowler Marc Bulger.
On both Sunday and Monday, Linehan gave Bulger a strong endorsement, saying Bulger gave the team the best chance to win despite playing with two broken ribs and would start Sunday against Arizona.
But on Tuesday, Linehan informed Bulger that he would sit for a week or two.
According to sources close to Bulger, Linehan told him sitting would give him a chance to let the ribs to heal and for the Rams to possibly get some injured players back on both sides of the ball.
Frerotte, 36, relieved Bulger in the second half of last week’s 35-7 loss to Dallas, completing three of six passes for 29 yards.
Frerotte started 15 games for Linehan in 2005 in Miami, when Linehan was offensive coordinator for the Dolphins.
