Caitlin Clark vs Angel Reese - "Burning Heart" in the Desert (4 Viewers)

Ministry of Pain

-These two just can't seem to get out of each other's way. I feel like Davis is the instigator and to be perfectly honest, I don't watch a lick of the WNBA
And that's my point. I don't know a thing about it and yet I know who these two ladies(loose term) are.
Reese wears some swanky outfits to the theater, I mean arena before the games, gotta giver some credit for her overall attitude

I can't tell if this is whooped up drama trying to sell a product that is wasting their time marketing it to guys like me...
Wait a minute, did someone say cat fight?
And that's how it feels to me. They want to push the cat fight angle and try to get more clicks and views

And as far as Caitlin and Reese are concerned, let me help. You want my money?
Step in the ring as soon as the season concludes and you two rack up a few more personal fouls and technicals with each other.
That's right, fight in an exhibition with advertisers that will easily push the purse past any amount of money they pay you in the WNBA, little over 100 grand when I checked

The advertisers pushing a boxing match for the two of you will easily net you several million each so think long and hard about what you are willing to do
Stop selling a product nobody wants, just enjoy playing basketball or get in the ring.
But stop having fights during games and trying to sell the WNBA like it's hockey, or some action packed wrestling, IT'S NOT!

:headbang:

-The title is an obvious reference to the Rocky IV theme song but went with GnR on the closeout anyways

You seem pretty worked up about something you claim not to watch or care about. 🤷
It's thrust into your face by ESPN if you tune in for any of the 4 major sports
You can't get away from it, it's advertised like it's an extension of the NBA during the Playoffs when the avg NBA fan wants to tune in
Then you have this cat fight splashed across the media outlets and the instant reaction on social media
You don't have to watch a second to be exposed to it

And your post is an encouragement to not speak up or say what's on the mind of many

Funny, I didn't hear anything about it until you made a post and I'm still not sure what happened

Nothing really. A foul upgraded to flagrant (she fouled since she only was on two fouls and Reese won’t sink both free trows) and two technicals on Reese and Clark‘s team mate.

I also think the term cat fight has run its course.

And it couldn’t have been expressed in the WNBA thread?

My issue is that like Howard Cosell you make declarations that don’t contribute anything other than to show off your personality. And you start new threads for each one regardless of whether there is a thread on that topic already.

All of that indicates you’re less interested in participating in community discussion and more interested in making everyone digest your hot or cold takes. This isn’t ESPN.

Should have called the push in the back on Reese on the rebound. Clark reacted partly because she was pissed that the push wasn’t called, leaving Angel wide open. It was a frustration foul. Everything flowed from that awful non-call.

1) This "feud" and the entire WNBA is the new soccer. Media keeps trying to force feed it to us and it's never going to be popular.
2) The best name I heard this weekend was someone calling Reese "Brick Barbie".

I saw the play on a replay and it looked like a typical foul preventing a layup and making and awful free throw shooter earn the points. I don't understand why there was any dust up and calling a flagrant was comical.

I'm very sorry this is happening to you.

Nick Wright nails it:

Biggest takeaway:

Reese has to get A LOT better for this to be a real rivalry.
C'mon, they only lost by 35
I am pretty sure he means as players, not their teams.

Clark is a superstar. Reese, in Wright's words, is a famous rebounder.

Anyone trying to act like this is a Bird vs Magic situation is on drugs.

Pretty much.

Reese and her stacked LSU team beat Clark for the title. Can't take it away from her. But she's the one constantly acting ridiculous here. She was openly cheering last year when Clark was getting hit with cheap shots and the "flagrant foul" call over the weekend was an absolutely absurd flop.

As far as as the "she had a very busy off-season" comment......it certainly makes it hard to take her seriously as a player when she came back for year 2 still unable to make layups. But honestly.....I dont blame her for taking every single opportunity to increase her profile and make off the court $$$. The stuff she does there is going to absolutely dwarf her WNBA salary.

Its very clear they dont like each other. But its also clear to me that there's a LOT more animosity coming from Reese.

Reese is very very VERY unlikeable from the outside.

Reese represents the old guard of the WNBA. I bet she receives a lot of kudos behind the scenes for giving Clark the business.
Without Clarke no one give her a second. She’s probably missing a layup as I’m typing this.
I get it, but it's been pretty well established the veteran WNBA players don't like Clark.
Why is that?
Jealousy of the attention she is getting. In her first season she was the most famous and profitable player in the league.

She's also the best player in the league. She's already tied for 3rd in triple doubles and has only played 50 games. She is going to be the top scorer, top assist maker and probably top 3pt shooter by the time it's said and done. She'll be the Jordan of the WNBA and she's a white girl. That's the issue.

Almost half the WNBA is white, so it feels like that component of the story is media driven.

Why do you think Aliyah Boston didn't get hate?

I don't even know what she did.

Not being an WNBA fan (or basketball in general) I looked up last years stats (AR and CC were both in the league) and I was surprised that neither of them were the top players in the league at all.

Apparently, A'ja Wilson from the Las Vegas team lead in most categories.

CC only really won on assists, and AR on offensive rebounds. But all other stat categories, only CC was in the top 10 on some of them and AR was no where to be found.

This makes this "rivalry" really stupid IMO. Based on the coverage and smack talk, you would think they were #1/#2 in most stat categories???

One is well on her way while the other one isn’t.

How many are white from the USA? versus white from overseas? The foreign white players and black players have to be 85% of the league. Bueckers coming in will ease some of the CC hatred.

I think it's more about money and jealousy. I'm writing without knowing the answer, but CC probably does have an advantage getting endorsements not only because she is essentially the S Curry of the WNBA but because the clean cut white girl next door image. And they all lash out at it not because of CC but because of every girl they've known that had that image.

To me the whole thing is stupid. But the only way the WNBA is relevant at all is if there is something to talk about other than playing a game where a top HS boys could beat them. Not that they aren't super skilled. But the difference in size, speed and athleticism make it a different game.

They were both rookies. Clark is basically the LeBron of the WNBA as a prospect and arguably had a better rookie year than LeBron (7th in scoring and 1st in assists....LeBron was what, 15th in scoring as a rookie?).

So yeah, obviously something that they're going to cover a lot within that sport, just like they did for LeBron his rookie year when he was much further behind the league leaders than Caitlyn.

Regarding the topic at hand, ESPN has the rights to all women's hoops stuff and this is the best chance women's hoops has had to draw viewers in pretty much ever, by far, so of course they're going to push it and try to make fetch happen.

And people are tuning in. 2.7 million viewers for their game the other night. That's a WNBA regular season game pulling in almost as many viewers as some of the NBA playoff games, which a few years ago would have been so outrageously insane to even think about.

Their biggest problem though is that Angel Reese probably just isn't good enough. The rivalry is going to lose its appeal within the next couple years when people realize it's basically like trying to maintain a rivalry between LeBron James and Andre Iguodala.

The problem with the WNBA is that outside a few players, with Angel Reese not being one of them, the product on the court isn’t very good.

I don't really know either. I'm just spitballing numbers here. I can name maybe 8 WNBA players. Most of them are white women who played at UCONN, and I only know that from ESPN coverage.

I think another issue they have is that all the hard contact and criticism Clark receives isn't rattling her the way they thought it would. The way Kaitlen carries herself is admitable
