California = Most Hated State (1 Viewer)

Americans love Hawaii, dislike California

Raleigh, N.C. – Over the course of four months starting last October, PPP asked American voters nationally what their impressions of each state are. Hawaii came out on top, by far, with California bringing up the rear.

Americans generally have a favorable view of most states. Only five are in negative territory, led by California (27% favorable and 44% unfavorable), Illinois (19-29), New Jersey (25-32), Mississippi (22-28), and Utah (24-27). Only seven other states have net-positive ratings in the single digits, and another breaks even (Louisiana).

Perhaps to no one's surprise, California ranked lowest with Republicans (according to the poll results, they "absolutely hate" the state) and highest with Democrats and women. Hawaii was the most liked state, followed by Colorado, Tennessee, South Dakota and Virginia. And then every other state in the country, and THEN California.

Say it ain't so!

Could it be our towering Redwoods? Our staggering coastline? Our 80-degree weather on February 23? Perhaps it's our mild temperament and active lifestyle. Or maybe it's that we're the world's fifth largest supplier of food.

Well here at HuffPost San Francisco, we say good riddance -- you can keep the other 49.

California has the largest GDP among states, which is to be expected since the state is more than 50% larger in terms of population than Texas, the next largest state.

California’s GDP in 2009 was $1,891 billion followed by Texas with $1,145 billion and New York with $1,093 billion, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.

California accounted for 13.37% of the country's GDP in 2009, and in 2000 accounted for 13.2% of the nation's GDP.

Texas, however, is currently contributing more than 1/2 a percentage point more to the nation's GDP than it did in 2000. The state's current GDP percentage is 8.09%, while is 2000 Texas accounted for 7.46% of the country's GDP.

In 2009, Virginia is in the top 10, after being number 11 the previous year, while North Carolina drops one spot and Georgia is out of the top 10.

Compared to the year 2000, Michigan, which has had its share of economic issues in recent years, is out of the top 10 list. Georgia was in the top 10 as well in 2000.

New York was the second largest economy in 2000, followed by Texas, Florida and Illinois.

Just went to L.A. for the first time a couple weeks ago. Loved it. Too sprawly and car-oriented for my tastes, but there was a lot of fun #### to do.

Yes, stay far far away from L.A. and CA. You'd hate it here. :X

Butt hole enema and all that stuff... totally true. Stay where you are and don't ever move here. Please.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of LA but I'd still live there over 95% of the country. That's great that people hate California (and watch Jersey Shore)...just means that when I finally move back to Marin County, there will be fewer people.

This tells me that most people have not been to Alabama.

Im not a fan of LA, but its better than 95% of the US.
Los Angeles is the worst place I've ever been. And I've traveled West Virginia and live next to Wisconsin.
I'd rather live in LA than the wastelands of Minnesota.
Different strokes. I'd rather live in Hallock than L.A.
Noted residents

Kristen Dexter, Wisconsin politician[5]

Frederick McKinley Jones, inventor

Donald Pederson, educator and inventor

[edit] In popular culture

Hallock was featured in the 1996 film Fargo substituting as Brainerd, Minnesota.
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,196 people, 485 households, and 305 families residing in the city. The population density was 573.2 people per square mile (220.9/km²). There were 586 housing units at an average density of 280.9 per square mile (108.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.91% White, 0.08% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.59% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.42% of the population.
I think LA and Hallock are quite similar.

It's not really California that people hate. It's Californians.
Just those commies who run San Francisco and those Nazis in Orange County. The other 35 million of you seem pretty decent. What are conservatives' problems with California? Queers? Porn industry? Racial diversity?

Who do Californians hate the most? Not sure we have animosity towards anyone
 I've only been to 12 or 13 other states and can't think of one that I have a negative opinion of. I wonder how many of those people polled have actually been to California or Hawaii for that matter.

If I were taking the poll hare are the states I would rank as unfavorable:

Alabama

Arkansas

Louisiana

Mississippi

I can't imagine how anyone could hate California.

I could see how they might hate themselves for not living there (I do that sometimes), but no idea how anyone could hate the state.

Here is the thing....

All other states have states around them that are very similar. The states in the northeast are all pretty much the same. I mean, who can tell the difference between the obnoxious New Yorker versus the annoying Bostonian if it was not for their dumb accents? The midwest is all the same just as the south is. If you are in Alabama, how are you going to hate your South Carolina clone? The pacific northwest- Washington and Oregon might as well be the same state. The southwest is one big ole' dessert. The only outliers are Hawaii and Alaska. Everyone loves Hawaii and no one ever thinks about Alaska. So, the only unique state that has everything within it's borders with great weather is California.

I'm going back to Cali, shakin 'em, bakin 'em

Takin 'em to spots they never before hung

Takin 'em to the place, on Sunset it's a trip

Where the A.C.'s cold, and the girls still strip

We're #2, we're #2!

FWIW, I think the politics in CA are ridiculous, even more than NJ. And the coat of living seems even higher than NJ too.

But, if my wife would be in favor, I'd move to CA from NJ in a heartbeat. The SD area is pretty much the best you can do in the US outside of Hawaii IMO.
