"ball caught securely with two hands, feet hit the ground, ball transferred securely to one hand, hip hits ground. That's what signified the catch for me.

I find it interesting that it seems everybody is voting the same on both questions.
Why do you find that interesting?
Well, to me it says that everyone thinks the questions are the same. So, when he completed his land is equal to when he play ended. I could easily see someone saying the play ended when his second foot hit but he didn't end his landing until after the ball dislodged. But it seems no one is separating the two.

How about when he rolled over and started to get up?
thishe was obviously using the ball hand to start to get up, and the ball came out. was not at all 'part of the process of coming down with the ball' to me.

It wasnt that he came down with the ball, it wasnt him getting 2 feet down and it wasnt him sitting there on his ###..what convinced me was him beginning to get up (after all of that) by using the ball to do so . Touchdown for sure.

Refs blew that call, he caught it, 2 feet down, hip down etc holding the ball in the air, rolled over, ball touched the ground and came out as an afterthought. When that's not a catch the NFL is a joke. It's ridiculous. At another game the refs call it good imo.

As a Lions fan, I can't remember the last time I felt so sick after a loss. Stafford is hurt and a really bad call costs them a win. I am sick, really. Especially after how great the defense played.

I remember a TB game some years back. one of our TEs caught a TD to win it with a few seconds left and they called it a TD on the field. they then went to replay and overturned with absolutely no definitive evidence. of course, we didn't lose our young qb in the same game.....show me another team that has this luck.

Would've been cool if the ref stayed ho-hum to see if they would throw the challenge flag. Then they can go ahead and make the correct call according to the rule. If not, good football prevails and any blame can go on the Bears staff for not seeing it.

That was Marcus Pollard and it was total BS.

You think you're sick now....take a look at the next three games and think about how bad it is going to be if we play like we did today.

I knew as soon as I saw the replay the first time that it would be overturned. Contact is made, must have possession through the end of the play..

As a Lion fan, I have to be positive and realize this loss will give us a better chance at Gabe Carimi.

Other: When he flicked the ball away with his fingers. Touchdown.

You know how it would have definitely been a touchdown? If he would have tucked the ball away instead flailing it around like a cocky #$@%. I think the rule sucks but Calvin Johnson has no one to blame but himself.

Sincerely,

Bears Fan

Exactly, Tuck the ball and come up with it afterword and it's a TD.

Enjoy your gift man. We all know the Bear's are cheaters. Always have been. Always will be.

I wish people could tell the difference between a bad call and a bad rule. This was an excellent call- exactly by the book and exactly what the NFL pounded into the refs this offseason. It was a terrible rule. Do you really want NFL referees practicing jury nullification when the rule happens to suck?

It wasn't a bad call. Just a dumb rule.
:loco: Samething happened to Troy P with an INT a year or two ago.
Actually it 2005, in the playoffs against Indianapolis. It was the first thing I thought of. The Steelers were up 21-10 at the time, and that play really should have ended the game. Instead the Colts got a TD on the very next play, and then the whole Bettis fumble and Big Ben tackle thing took place a little later...But the Polamalu play was quite similar. He had the interception, went down, and then came up without the ball.

What rule exactly?http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/definitions

Here is what I see at NFL rules:

1) "Touchdown: When any part of the ball, legally in possession of a player inbounds, breaks the plane of the opponent’s goal line, provided it is not a touchback."

Clearly Johnson had possession of the ball and broke the plane of the goal line. Or did he have possession?

2) Possession defined as "Possession: When a player controls the ball throughout the act of clearly touching both feet, or any other part of his body other than his hand(s), to the ground inbounds."

Clearly Johnson had control of the ball as both his feet touched the ground, then his body touched the ground.

The ball didn't release until after both feet and body touched. Touchdown. Bad call. Bears should have lost.

 exactly! How was the call even correct according to the rule?

He isn't quoting the rules, he's quoting a set of definitions from a fan-friendly rules summary that fits on one page (as opposed to the real NFL rule book which is over 200 pages long).

:goodposting: I'm a Calvin owner who is going to lose my game because of this play, but Calvin has nobody to blame but himself. Common sense says it should have been a TD, Common sense says the rule is stupid and needs to be changed. Common sense says Calvin as a professional has to be aware of the rule, good or bad and hang on to the damn ball.
