He isn't that type of guy from everything you hear about him, and he wasn't getting 16 million. That deal was going to be redone, still probably going to get 10 to 12 million though.16 million is a lot to throw away.Keep that dream alive! It's a rumor until the paperwork is handed inIt's a rumor until it comes from Calvin. That's interesting, and is a valid argument for waiting to see if he actually retires. Could still be a negotiating tactic. He's gonna owe Detroit $3.2M, that's almost a $20M swing... I'm sure he is very comfortable, but $20M is something he might regret 10 years from now.
I don't know all the nuances of his contract, but I feel like he would collect at least $25M for another two years of service, but if anyone understands the details id love to hear it.That's interesting, and is a valid argument for waiting to see if he actually retires. Detroit could also let him go without asking for the money, as they were probably going to ask him to take a pay cut anyway. He's gonna owe Detroit $3.2M, that's almost a $20M swing... I think he is just different than most athletes. I bet he saved a lot of his money and doesn't need to ever have a job again, I think his health is more important to him than the earning power he has for the next few years. Most athletes aren't like that and it makes it difficult to think he is, but he has never been the typical athlete.I don't know all the nuances of his contract, but I feel like he would collect at least $25M for another two years of service, but if anyone understands the details id love to hear it.That's interesting, and is a valid argument for waiting to see if he actually retires. Pro athletes prob don't understand that they'll never have this type of earning power after they retire (with the exception of a certain few)... Maybe he thinks he'll somehow be able to earn a few million dollars a year doing who knows what, but reality sets in quickly, hence the amount of former players in broadcasting and analyzing games. Some just like the big screen, but I'd bet for the majority it is about the paycheck.
Average/year numbers are great but he's just inline with Brandon Marshall right now in about the same # of games.hof?
Don't care one way or the other. But remember Favre?Keep that dream alive! It's a rumor until the paperwork is handed inIt's a rumor until it comes from Calvin. Kudos to Deamon and all, but this isn't over.No longer a RUMOR
He farms elk now?How many NFL players of his elk contemplate retirement, tell family and friends then change mind?
Tex
Favre still wanted to play. He still had competitive fire. Calvin never had top end competitive fire to begin with like Rice, Moss & T.O. The Lions were able to suck any competitive fire out of Calvin in 8 years and this year it appears he knew he was already finished before the season started.Don't care one way or the other. He'd have to have a screw moose to try this. How many NFL players of his elk contemplate retirement, tell family and friends then change mind?

The history is that it cost the Lions more $ than J-Fat Russell and they won the same # of playoff games. A great pick that they totally wasted.Calvin had plenty of competitive fire. He showed up at the combine as a guaranteed top 5 pick, set to perform a few of the tests but not all. He got so pumped up by some of the others there that he decided to run the 40 anyway...in somebody else's shoes. Needless to say he went #2 overall and the rest was history.
Cmon, how was he a miss? Maybe a ton of other misses for them, but this guy has been a top tier WR every year he has been in the league. It isn't his fault he was drafted by a team destine to fail. Imagine he had been drafted by like Green Bay, New Orleans, Indy, or a bunch of other teams... He'd be in the conversation of GOAT, comparing him to Jamarcus, that's insanity. The history is that it cost the Lions more $ than J-Fat Russell and they won the same # of playoff games. Don't think lod01 is in any way calling him a miss. Just that it didn't win them any playoff games so its a shame his talent was wasted.Cmon, how was he a miss? Who cares, its the Lions. Great players have come and gone in this franchises history and have not won a damn thing. I dont care what the Ford's spend or how much they lose. It is what we do here in Detroit. The history is that it cost the Lions more $ than J-Fat Russell and they won the same # of playoff games. The guy has earned $100+ million not including endorsements. I don't know his reasons, but getting even more money that he probably won't spend in his lifetime may not be very important to him.He doesn't strike me as a financially irresponsible individual, but who knows... Even if he is the savviest guy out there, one more year at half ### is worth it. Sure his body is hurting, but after 20 years of football, what's the 21st?
Just my .02
Yeah he's definitely missing some WIM but he never really had it. The Lions are partially to blame so you can't totally blame Calvin.Favre still wanted to play. He still had competitive fire. And the "thread of the year award goes to......"
Nice job, Daemon.
On the money end, I just heard a segment as I was doing other things yesterday but I heard Shefty on tv reminding people that his last two deals have both been huge and benchmark deals at the time they were signed and his phrase was "money is not an issue at all. He has enough money to financially provide for his family for generations.
He also did some endorsements, etc ,and while we don't know, he doesn't appear to be an obvious candidate for throwing his money away.
I know its hard for us, the average citizen (except for Daemon...who is now "Nostradaemon") to think of because $10 Million-$16 million sounds impossible to walk away from but IF we were in that position, this is like talking to a firefighter who has been on the job for 20 years and had been banged up and has some injuries related to the job and he's contemplating retirement and the financial impact is about 1/2 of one year salary.
When you think about the long-term physical limitations the game can impose and you consider how smart some of these guys are in thinking past today and next week, I can buy that he will follow through.
He was a great one to watch. A little squandered in his surroundings but still nothing like him when he was on top of his game.

it will be interesting to see how many other players retire early. Maybe just Lions and 49ers.
