Cam's Role in Carolina (1 Viewer)

Brothers Mayhem

Assuming that Newton wins the starting job and becomes the starter this year in Carolina, does his presence hinder DWill's & JStew's value?

One of Cam's strengths is his big play ability when moving out of the pocket. Will this influence Rivera & Company to call more pass plays, bootlegs, etc. to create opportunities for Newton? Or will they simply try to convert Cam into a pure pocket passer that works from under center predominantly?

I must admit that I am not too familiar with the new OC & don't know what to expect from Carolina's offense this year. I just know we got a lot of loose ends and a roll of the dice at QB. With a very tough schedule ahead, I feel confident that we will be trailing quite often.

Although I was against the Panthers selecting Newton at 1.01 - I heard over and over all the reasons why they had to make that decision - but no one is talking about how they intend to utilize him. Are we thinking Vick-like comparisons or maybe more like a Roethlisberger, but faster, or what? Can't help but to envision Newton receiving the snap, check one, check two, tuck & run - repeat.

What the hell has happened to my team?

This is what I wrote on the Panthers Lair forum about Newton:

My issue is this: We selected 2.5 QB's last year (Clausen, Pike, Edwards being the half). None of those selected have shown anything so far. What has changed that made the staff feel like they're all the sudden competent in choosing a QB at #1, especially one with so many question marks? I hope he excels and becomes a good QB because if he doesn't, we just set the franchise back another 3-5 years.

If Newton starts this year and plays a full year, my projection is 2300 yds passing with 7tds/14ints, 600 yds rushing with 9tds. We will win 1-4 games this year at the most given that I read we'll have the toughest schedule next year and possibly be in the running for the #1 pick next year.

I think this will be a step back for Stewart and Williams if he stays. I believe our main receiving threat Smitty will be traded or he holds out for a trade and maybe plays the last 6 games of the year. That leaves the cupboard bare for receiving threats which means we'll see more 8 men in the box defenses.

I hated this pick...BUT, surely Cam can't be any worse than Clausen. So maybe, just maybe, the Panthers can win 3 or 4 games this year. :bag:

Cam's Role in Carolina
Clipboard holder for Clausen.
The #1 overall pick gonna ride the bench?
Yes, he should absolutely ride the bench for a year. He needs to spend as much time as possible with the QB coach to learn to play from under center and learn to look past his primary read to the rest of the receivers before he takes off and runs. He can't do one look and run anymore unless he wants an extremely short career. I hope for all of us Panther fans sake that he becomes at least as good as Alex Smith or Garrard. If not, it's going to be a long ride of no playoff football for us.

Newton is this years jemarcus/leaf, in otherwords a freaking bust of epic proportion.
This seems to be the popular opinion, but I'm betting Cam will surprise everyone. He may not be the next P. Manning, but he will not bust to the levels of Russell and Leaf. As for his role this season, I think Clausen will start. But let's face it, Carolina isn't going to win 9-10 games. Cam will get plenty of opportunity to get in games to see what he can do. I'm betting he does well in the long run.

Have you seen Carolina's schedule? Brady wouldn't win 8 games with the Panthers this year.

Cam will surprise all you guys. A running QB in his mold will make Jonathan Stewart better. Carolina already has a decent defense, (although they sure could use that 2nd round pick right about now), and this will really help things. Newton needs to reach out to Steve Smith and form a bond.

Look, I've read all sorts of things about the kid that are patently untrue. He is not dumb. Auburn did not dumb down their offense for him. On the contrary, though it is a gimmicky offense, he picked it up without delay. This guy came to Auburn and was so good that Auburn didn't play him in their spring game last year or show him to the media because they realized how good he was. As Bama fans we laughed at Auburn when they said things like "Newton is so good, we are hiding him from everyone". It sounded ludicrous. Then he came out and torched the SEC in a lightning quick offense that he had never played in before.

He won a national championship in Juco, then gave Auburn the championship that they usually get every 50 years or so.

He's going to play from day 1, Clausen has no chance at beating him out. He is larger than life and has an ego to match. He's very intelligent, and probably a little conniving. The biggest thing I worry about is that he goes there, gets some success and lets it get to his head, thinking that he's ARRIVED. If he studies the craft, I think he's a potential top 5-10 QB in the NFL. He's got all the talent in the world and is being SEVERELY underrated by the Shark Pool.

Night and Day from Jamarcus Russell. As someone who watched both play many, many games...there is NO comparison. Russell was at his worst in the big games. Newton was at his best with the lights on against great opponents.

Agreed. That's why Cam will have plenty of chance to play (early on), as they will not be in playoff contention.

You don't know what you are talking about. Cam never runs after his first read on a designed pass play. You act like you are so much more enlightened than all of the scouts, GMs, coaches and owners who were willing to take Cam with their high draft pick. The statistic breakdowns showed that Cam was acutally one of the better QBs in the NCAA with regard to the exact thing you are bashing him for. The only reaosn you are fooled (like a lot of other people) is because their run option plays are designed to look like he is going to pass the ball prior to him taking off on a designed run. They are pretty obvious plays unless you know little about football. They are simply plays designed to freeze the linebackers for a split second to give Cam a slight head start. Will Carolina implement the run option as an intergral part of their offense? I doubt it. 1. They would not spend the #1 pick overall on the basis of having to implement a gimicky playbook to make their investment work, 2. They don't want to ge their invesment killed. What you hope you are getting with Cam is the passing and pocket presence of Rolthisberger and the running ability of Rodgers or Vince young. I think Cam will struggle like a lot of other rookie QBs do in the NFL. He has to learn to do things he has never done before - and learn fast - and at a very high level. He will probably struggle to read and react to NFL defenses for a long time. The beauty of it though is that he can still hurt defenses on the ground while he is learning to be a pocket passer. So yea I expect him to run a lot until he matures as an NFL passer. If he doesn't ever mature as an NFL passer he will eventually get replaced like any othe 1st round bust. However, if he fails it might take longer to pull the trigger ousting him since he will always be a positive force on the ground.

he'll be starting by midseason, when they are officially eliminated from playoff contention. he can watch a few games, maybe even get trotted out late in blow out games. i wouldn't expect him to start game one.

As a Panthers homer, I'm seriously thinking about getting the Sunday ticket so that I have more game watching options this season. Cam is going to suck but the truth is that we were going to suck regardless of who we drafted in the first round.

Tim Couch started from day 1.

Peyton Manning started from day 1.

Jamarcus Russell started from day 1.

Sam Bradford started from day 1.

Cam Newton WILL start from day 1. His "role" is the new face of the franchise, come what may.

exactly. Carolina threw caution (and good football sense) into the wind to get an "exciting" player to keep butts in the seats. I hope Ron Rivera is only renting in Charlotte.

Do you think this will actually happen? Watching him play in college, I doubt he will be able to make a lot of the NFL throws particularly when his players are actually covered.

I agree that we were gonna face an uphill struggle regardless of who we took with the 1.01 - but that, to me, makes the biggest case for going with an A.J. Green or one of the defensive pieces needed. Ideally trading down would have been nice, but I can see were that might have been tough to do. Any player taken there other than Cam not only improves our team, but keeps us "Luck" eligible for next year's draft should we suffer another bad year, as I suspect we will do. Now, by taking Cam, how can we draft Luck if we end up picking 1.01 again? The Panthers have made the commitment to Cam and will have to follow through. Is there gonna be another AJ Green to pick next year? I highly doubt it. Carolina was in a fortunate situation where they could have gotten the consensus "best player in the draft" not only this year with Green, but then again next year with Luck. (An argumentative statement I know)However - if Carolina will bail on Claussen after one year for Cam, maybe they'll do it again for Luck. (Not trying to say Luck is the end all of end all - but he makes much more sense than a super athlete roll of the dice project)As far as putting butts in the stands - nothing does that better than winning. My love of Carolina will force me to endure this and to cheer them on accordingly - I just hate seeing them reduced to rebuilding a team in this manner.

Steve Smith had already cleaned out his locker. he wasn't going to stand for it. DeAngelo can't wait to get outta dodge but is smart enough to say the right things. Everyone else gets to enjoy loss after loss.

I wish him nothing but the best. It's going to be a tough year for him though. Greg Williams will torment him. The South plays the North this year. Clay Matthews week 2. Ouch.
