Can anyone explain this to me? (1 Viewer)

As a Pats fan I was extremely excited for this season, I liked the draft choices they had made on the defense and I was very happy about the addition of Lloyd to stretch the field. However, the Pats are having trouble pulling away from this crappy division, what makes it worse is the offense and the defense are having problems. They seem to start off well and move the ball up and down the field in the first half, but in the second half it is a different story, it looks like they are content with a 10 point lead and just go into a prevent offense, hoping they don't make a mistake and let the other teams back in the game. This is already cost them 2 games this year, against Baltimore and Seattle and almost cost them 2 more games against the Jets and Broncos. Is this bad play calling? Are the half time adjustments by the other teams that good? Is it some kind of divine plan by the hoodie to get his defense some experience playing in big time pressure spots since they are young and he knows they are going to win the division? Someone explain this to me if you can.

life long pats fan here. the biggest problem with this team is that their defensive backs su ck. if i was an offensive coach facing the pats my game plan would be to have my QB throw as far as he could down field on all 3 downs every series. i predict the results would be one incompletion, one catch for their receiver and one defensive pass interference. most of the time the pats secondary don't even turn around. kind of sad really if your a pats fan.

We need to close out games on offense, that is what has been missing. Today's game felt lie the Arizona and Minnesota games, we need to closeout teams and that has not been happening.

Because you don't play for anyone. And I'm not bent out of shape. Thought it was funny...carry on.
:hophead: I just want a break down of what happened to make the secondary somehow become worse.Get Chung back, plays great for one game, then acts like hes never played football, the rookie DBs are awful.Mccourty spends 50% of his time on the field in some sort of 20 yards deeper than anyone should even be zone coverage and absolutely refuses to release. And, spends the other 50% chasing WRs down that are behind him.

Total gimmick offense, soft defense.

Define gimmick, also one of the best front 7s in the NFL... secondary is absolutely garbage though.

Definition questions are always subject to context, so I've heard. But really, that's just :fishing:

Clearly thats why I asked, I was going to mock you.

What I mean by prevent offense is they seem to play it safe when they get up by about 10 or so, the problem is they are doing this with 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter not the 4th. They seem to run a lot more than pass and you will see a Woodhead run on 3rd and 9 with 6 minutes left in the 3rd. They punt and hope their defense can hold on, and we all know this isn't the 85 Bears (who am I kidding I would take the the early 2000 Patriots defenses). Last year they tried to keep the offense in rhythm when they were up until the late in the 4th.

The Pats won the game. Patriots fans are so spoiled they blubber even after a overtime victory because their team wasn't perfect enough.

The Jets have a good defense and as the path through the division goes through NE the Jets are largely influenced by trying to beat the Pats.

The Patriots defense is being protected by the hurry up prevent offense. The defense is better at stopping the run than it is against the pass. Emperor Palpatine is not making the defense play more (although they do need seasoning) with the offense keeping the ball 3 min a game on average more that they did last season.

Enjoy your lofty perch while Brady is still on top of his game. Bill cashed in his rolling picks finally to make a push over the next 3-5 years or however long Brady can keep this up.

Against the Seahawks they tried to score at the end of the half with no time outs and 6 seconds on the clock. Bill should have kicked the field goal there.Other than that I do not understand the problem.

Maybe you haven't been paying attention, but we have. Pats have allowed more plays over 20 yards than any other team, and its visibly obvious while watch the games.

Mark Sanchez isn't even a mediocre QB, their WRs aren't even middle of the road. Yet more than a handful of times just tonight Sanchez chucks the ball 20+ yards down the field where two or more WRs are completely uncovered.

This has happened in the last 4 games... and its a huge step down from even how bad they were two years ago.

The Patriots have been poor in pass defense for awhile. They got a boost from McCourtey as a rookie last year and he is by far their best player in the secondary but is still developing as well. The offense is doing a good job of keeping the ball longer to protect the defense but when the other team does get the ball they have to fling it as they are behind and running out of time. The pass rush has improved this season from last but the defense is still very much a work in progress.

This is Mccourtys third year, Patrick Chung is their best player in the secondary and they are worse this year than they have been in the past 3.People say nothing has changed, and its very clear that something has changed.

You would think improving the front seven would make the take aways just happen, but they aren't even in position to make plays, let alone just cover players.

Well the Patriots were dead last in pass defense last season and 30th in 2010. So yes the pass defense has been bad for awhile. Part of it is also because teams are mostly playing from behind and have to abandon the run catching up. I just don't really see how the coaching staff can do more than they have to win games though.

No, seriously, how is the Patriots offense a gimmick offense?

they clearly have some issues, but hopefully they get better when gregory gets back, and as the year progresses.

looking around the afc I can't really say they've got much to complain about.

we'll see how they stack up against houston later in the year.
