Can coaches be "traded" for picks (1 Viewer)

Keep reading how Herm may go to KC but since he is under contract that KC would have to compensate the JEts with an agreed upon pick. I thought these types of deals were outlawed after the Gruden fiasco. If these deals are outlawed, I am shocked this story has so much life as there is no way JEts let Herm go unless picks are involved.

I don't know about the compensation, but the Jets are willing to give KC their third round pick if you take him.

It happened after the Gruden trade. Too bad though. I would be willing to give up our first round pick if KC were willing to take "you play to win the game, but you coach to lose it".

I thought that once Vermeil stepped down, the HC position was all but guaranteed to Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Al Saunders. What happened?

Rumor is he's the next Detroit coach. At least according to someone I know who heard about it on Detroit radio a few days ago.

So (Hermie jokes aside) why are all these stories out there about a comp deal for Herm - are sportswriters that ignorant of the facts or could a deal still be worked out? I mean - is there an actual rule banning this or did Tags just say it would be frowned upon?

Vermeil has been campaigning constantly for Saunders, but I haven't heard the Chiefs say a single word about who they're looking at.

I'm fairly certain the NFL banned the draft pick compensation thing for coaches thing after the Gruden/Tampa incident. 99.9 percent certain.

why in gods name would he rather go to Detroit

updatevery reliable Jet confidential site is reporting that KC wants Herm and Herm has asked out of his contract already. KC is willing to give up picks as long as it is not its 1st rder. They want to wrap it up by the end of the week. Are the teams even aware of this policy or can there be an end aroundInteresting - as a Jet fan where do I sign to get a 2nd rd pick for Herm!

further update:NFL Network's Adam Shefter reports that the Jets and Chiefs are locked in "serious negotiations" regarding Herm Edwards.Shefter believes Edwards is almost as good as gone. The Jets will likely get multiple mid-round draft picks for Edwards. Jets owner Woody Johnson must not want to give Herm a long-term deal. The Jets could possibly lose Edwards and defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson. Jan. 3 - 7:18 pm etGive me a 2nd rder for Herm and I'll drive him to the airport! Could live with a 3rd and 4th as it sounds.

Yes, its allowed. PFT ran an article talking about this exact issue. Coaches can be traded, front office personnel cannot.

read the PFT articleThere was a statement from the Commish's office frowning upon the coaches for picks deals after Gruden's deal. A memo came out and it was thought that the practice would be banned. PFT clarified that the memo bancs comp picks for assistant coaches and front office execs - HCs can still be dealt. Go Jets! Herm must have pictures of Peterson!

You can trade picks for Head Coaches but not assistants, coordinators or front office people.Tom

Head coaching trades also need commissioner approval. Should KC & NYJ come to an agreement (and it seems imminent), Tags would have to sign off on the deal.

Rumors on NY-talk radio indicate that the JETS may look bring in Long Island-native, Mike Tice as Herm's successor. Haslett may also be a candidate.

LOLHerm Edwards or Mike Tice?

That's like asking if you want death by electrocution or death by lethal injection.

For some reason Carl Peterson and Al Saunders are not on the same page, and Carl has man-love for Herm ... he looked at him after Marty retired ...I'd rather have Al FWIW ...

Unbelievable that team(s) would want Herm so badly. :loco:

I still think this is a whole ploy to try to drive up Herm's contract.

But, please - Take Bradway too.

My preference1. Butch Davis2. Bob Stoops3. Herman Edwrads-dont wanna give up picks for a coach.4. Al SaundersI think Davis, with a veteran team will do a great job.....he didnt have that much to work with in Cleveland.I also just heard from my dad, who is buddies with Len Dawson and other CHiefs alums like Bobby Ply, Walter White and Fred Arbanas (no joking here--they are drinking buddies lol) that last season, Al Davis wanted Al Saunders to take over for Norv Turner.......so throw another name into the Saunders race. He said he heard that from Bobby Ply, who is obviously plugged into the situations.

As much as Tice/Haslett have been "punching bags" on this board. Both names were mentioned on ESPN-radio this afternoon as potential candidates. I LOL, you not.

Tice better not be brought in here. That'd be the worst thing for the Jets since Rich Kotite.
