Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (1 Viewer)

Did the chat and was offered $5/month for 12 months. Got the phone number and PIN as mentioned above. Told them I was comparing Dish and what I currently had and was looking to get RedZone and lower my bill. Ended up getting Redzone for free, $100 gift card and lowered my bill $45/month for 12 months. It did require a 12 month agreement but I hadn't planned on leaving anyway. Had the option of free ST but would've had to pay for ST MAX to get RedZone and I would rather just have the RedZone. Never threaten to leave. Easiest call ever.
 on the bold part.. What plan did you get at $45/month???

We are 90% ready to cut the cable but our auto-pay kicked in so have one more month.. Wife last night said "If they can get the bill at no more then $50 we'll stay, otherwise cancel"

Right now, after the Choice plan, 3 Receivers, local channels and DVR we are paying over $100 a month.. If we can get to $50 or lower then I get to keep NFL Network & ESPN and she gets her FOOD Network and HGTV..
Total Choice - HD DVR only have one TV. My bill was close to $90 and is now $35 for 12 months plus the RedZone so I'm actually getting about $50 off per month from what I was paying.

Here are the discounts listed on my account:

SELECT - $10/12moSel2Ent

TOTAL CHOICE - $5/12mValueDisc

TOTAL CHOICE - $20/12moBasePkg

TOTAL CHOICE - $5/24moBasePkg

Advanced Receiver-DVR - 12moCrdtAdvRcvr ($10.00)

DIRECTV Channels 66.99

DIRECTV Equipment Services 35.00

Other Charges, Adjustments & Taxes 5.61

Total Amount Due

107.60 <_<

for some reason my auto renew has not processed this year. i am unsure how to go about screwing them over............will report back

Wow that was depressing :(

I made my yearly call and hit multiple brick walls like has never happened before.

I called and was offered $10 off for 12 months. I said it was not enough and asked to cancel which she was more than happy enough to set up. :( I told her I need to think about it more.

I went the chat line route, got the special phone number and pin and called and got the identical offer of $10 of a month with absolutely no wiggle room. It seems like they have a new mandate now to try and get you to go to a lower channel package instead of giving a promotion.

I went with the $10 off a month and will call back in a few months to see if there is any thing new they can offer.

I never got less than $30 off a month in previous years :(

Negotiating is damn near mandatory with DirecTV.

I just did the annual "my Sunday Ticket charge is too high" call this past week.

I looked up last year to see what this year's target was. I paid $89.94 last year. Thought that would be tough to beat.

I was wrong.

Started at a ridiculous $239.94 this year (6 x $39.99)

Took less time than usual to get through the first person (hey, thanks for that $8/month credit for 6 months, but that's not gonna do it)

Next guy put me on hold and came back with:

* $40.99/month but for 4 months. Hey, there's $75.98 ... making progress.

* $20/month for 12 months (longtime customer) ... another $240 ... now we're talking

* $10/month for 12 months (waived HD channel fee) $120 more ... wow

* $5/month for 24 months (off programming charge) $120 more .... they should have just left the Sunday ticket price alone :D

All told I reduced the $239.94 Sunday Ticket charge by $555.98. Not too shabby.

Of course I'm a helluva negotiator

The 3 month HBO thing must be the current first offer of any kind.

I was just on the chat line thing asking if there was any possibility of a stand alone Redzone mobile app.

She told me to try the regular ticket app since I have redzone and see if redzone works on it (doubtful it will).

Then she just said she could give me HBO for 3 months free.

yea, i didn't care about the movie channels at all. he said, let me 'hook you up' with something for your call. i didn't ask for anything on this call. once he established that my discounts would come off on the 5th, he said to call on friday.

Now that DirecTV and Raycom (CBS) are in dispute it looks like our local NFL opener might be in unavailable even WITH the ticket. Makes me kind of wish we hadn't reuped right now. :(

How did you get to the "next guy"?

After I talked with my first rep, she put a note in my notes saying that was all she could offer so when I called back to get a second person via the pin number I got the same block because they just read the note that the previous rep left.

I just asked for him.

I think this was my 12th annual call to DTV to renegotiate the cost. Might depend on how long you've been a customer these days.

I still can't get over how well I did this year.

Next year's going to be tough; will be hard to beat this year's haul.

Just say retention until you're there. Then, if you don't get what you want, ask for the manager.

I went as far as cancelling the service this year. I never had to get any where near that before. They simply said "ok" and started the process of cancelling the service and letting me know where to send the boxes back.

It was like rentention was not even a priority (I have been with them for 10 years now).

Schedule the cancellation for the end of your next billing cycle. Right before that day comes call in again. That's what worked for me this year.

I really think a lot of this is the byproduct of being bought by at&t. Next year will be even more difficult I think.

Annual call to Directv asking to cancel service because my bill is too high

Free Sunday Ticket Max

35 off monthly for a year

5 dollar off sports package for next 6 months

Free Showtime next 6 months

No contract

I’ve been with them since 1998 so YMMV

About to enter second year of contract. Bill going up to 120 a month next month. Already called once and wouldn't give a single discount. Calling next week to set up disconnect date. Will try again. If no dice, I'll set the date for a couple weeks away. Will try one more time before then. If they can't get it down to 70 a month and free Sunday Ticket, I'll get it cut off and go to Dish. $240 early termination fee but Dish will start out at 45 a month for the first year. The difference will be made up in 3 months. I can live without Sunday Ticket.

Free ST Max

$20 off for 12 mos

$10 off for 6 mos

$5 off for 6 mos (auto draft)

Free HBO, Show, and something else for 3 mos.

Called for my folks. Still in contract for 6 more months.

First call was woman "south of nashville", offered:
• Half price Sunday Ticket Max.
• Credit for first month of 6
• $10 off per month
- She wouldn't budge... "okay, I'm going to contact Comcast to get it set up then I'll be calling back next week to cancel, Thanks"

Called right back. Got a woman was no nonsense.

• Free Sunday Ticket Max
• Total of $30 off per month for 12 months.

• No new contract.

Both calls took under 10 mins total.

I called on Saturday to get a sunday ticket deal and was totally stymied. I went round and round with a lady who was nice but wouldn't budge on giving me any deals. I knew there was a free preview of the ticket on sunday so I knew I still had a little wiggle room to get a deal done.

Called back tonight and from the automated menu I said "check contract." I was on hold for about 10 minutes, the last few of which I was treated to an awful George Michael song. When the rep came to the phone and asked how I was doing tonight I told him thank god you got to my call, you saved me from having to hear any more of that george michael song. He laughed and asked which one and I sang a little bit of it to him. He said it was the best opening to a call he'd had.

I told him I wanted to check my contract status. He looked at my notes and could tell I called Saturday for the red zone, etc. He noted that I had been a customer for 10 years and almost instantly told me I was eligible for free sunday ticket basic. With very little more from me, he went on to offer me $20 off my bill per month and went ahead and upgraded my (now) free sunday ticket to the max. The only thing I had to do was agree to a new 1 year contract. Even that isn't so bad. The early termination fee is only $10 per month and is pro-rated (i/e if I cancel with 6 months to go it will cost me $60)

My DVR is several years old. He offered me an upgrade to the genie for only $3 more per month but that was going to require a 2-year contract. I told him I didn't want to be tied down that long. We chatted about football a little and then he forwarded me on to the contract acceptance people. He was funny and friendly and extremely helpful. The whole call lasted less than 15 minutes. It was by far the most positive experience I've ever had calling in. The way he was throwing deals around I probably could have gotten even more if I'd pushed it, but since all I really wanted was to be able to watch the red zone at a discount I happily accepted his offer. Mission accomplished.

I'm in contract until Dec 2015. I still have credits on my account for 3 more mos ($20 off, the $15 off just expired) so he said it was blocking him from allowing more credits to be issued.

I asked what could be offered in terms of programming and I ended up getting ST Max for $13. I got charged $163, but then he issued a $100 credit and a $50 credit.

He said to call back in 3 months when my other credits expire and they'll be able to issue more.

I feel good, not great.

Going to try but I just can't see them giving me off enough over the next year to avoid going elsewhere. Once the second year of the contract kicks in, it's way too expensive to not justify paying the termination fee unless they give you a huge discount or you just have to have ST.

OK.. Made my first call today.. Our contract ended last month so we are free agents so to speak..

Very nice lady, chatted it up about not wanting to lose sports, and the wife didn't want to lose Food Network.. I didn't push real hard just wanted to see how far I could get with the first person I talked to. Told her we actually purchased an outdoor Antenna last month but missed the Auto-pay otherwise would have canceled last month..

Got the monthly bill dropped from $103 to $69.. Not a bad start but am hoping to get at least another $15 off that.

She also threw in 4 free months of Showtime..but best she offered for now was 1/2 off ST Max. :(

No new contract so told her I'd speak to the wife and we'd discuss the new offer.

So, when I call tomorrow, do I just talk to the first person, or do you recommend I ask for Retention immediately? TIA!

You shouldn't have terminated that call to begin with. You should have moved on with that offer in hand.

In any case you probably won't get anything more from the first agent. But give it a go THEN immediately move on to retention.

Figured they'd throw a note in there or something about "Will take the offer to the wife" to give myself some bargaining chips for the next call.

As I said, our contract is up, we are paid through 9/24 and we were ready to just disconnect and go with Netflix and OTA last month if we hadn't missed the Auto-pay date..

Any thoughts if the deals would get better if I used Dish Network??

We received the offer in the mail for $45/month plus a $200 Visa Debit card so maybe using that instead of the OTA would work better??

uggghhhh.. Not getting anywhere.. onto my 3rd call now.. :wall:

last offer was nothing dropped or added but a $100 visa debit card..

Let's see if the 3rd time is a charm or we maybe moving onto the OTA.

ETA... Another $10 off per month, so down to $58.99, started at $107... She's checking on Sunday ticket for me

Well, could only get the Full ticket for 1/2 off, but did offer Red Zone for free so took that..

Total "haul":

Dropped from $107/Month to $59/month

Free Showtime and HBO for 3 Months

Free Red Zone

All without any new contracts..

finally got around to calling today. not under contract. $30 worth of discounts came off last month. here's what i got.

free sunday ticket, i had to re-up for 1 year

max upgrade half off, $45

$20 off for 12/mo

$10 off for 12/mo

$5 off for 12/mo

$5 off for 24/mo

free genie and genie mini upgrade whenever i want it

absolutely as easy as could be. no conflict, no BS, no, "my wife's mad at me". just said my bill was too high, now that the previous discounts had come off and that if i wasn't going to get the ticket, there was no advantage to having direct tv.

thx tabitha!!

Just called in, and without any hardball tactics:

--Free Sunday Ticket

--Sunday Ticket Max Upgrade: $25

--$15/mo knocked off the bill

--$100 Visa Gift card

She offered free Genie, but I passed so that I'm not locked into a 2 year contract.

Went back to chat a minute ago and got a ST Max upgrade for $45 and free Showtime for 3 months (after getting ST for $9 last month and nothing else.)

So those that got regular ST without Max, you might be able to go back into chat and get a deal.

Here's the chat link again...just sign into your DTV account before you open chat.

I have a pretty basic DirecTV package, but I always call for discounts around football time.

Got the below with a simple call...I didn't even threaten the guy with cancelling. I just said, "I call every year, you guys give me free stuff, I stick around and am happy. I'm doing it again. What can you give me?" He said, "We appreciate your business. Let me see what I can do." The key is to say "Cancel Service" at the automated prompt. Takes you right to the folks who can give you free stuff.

ST Max for $30 x 6 (+$180)

$20 off my bill for 15 months (-$300)

Free Showtime for 6 months (???)

No contract extension

Net $120 in savings + Showtime, and ST Max essentially for free.

Just called, I was very polite and inquisitive. They offered premium package that included all their channels for $130. Sunday Ticket/RZ not included. Representative insisted that Sunday Ticket is a subscription and I would have to pay full price.

I have the premier package with 3 receivers (only 1 DVR) but since all my discounts fell off I am up to $168/mo so I just called and spoke to Randy.....

Was very polite, told him I dont want to cancel but the cost is very high and with all the offers from TWC (mentioned I cant watch the Dodgers), Dish and even new DirecTv customer offers I may need too.

he got me:

$10 off sports package (which is included in premier package) for 1 year

$20 off movie channel for 6 months (4 channels at $5 each)

$20 off my package for 1 year

$5 off for 2 years

$10 off my receivers

$65 total.

Then since my sister signed up recently and forgot to give my account, he was able to get that added so thats another $10 off.

Asked about Sunday Ticket and he said if I extend my contract for 1 year I get ST free! So of course I did that.

Upgrade to wireless would be a $99 one time fee so I held off. I can also call back and get the genie package with wires for free if I extend for a 2nd year. May do that since we can not pause live tv on 2 receivers.

So from $168 able to get to

$93.62 for 6 months then $123.62 for the next 4, then $133.62 for the next 2...

Plus ST!

contract is up this month.. lady tried to resign me for 24 months for $10 off a month.. almost laughed

think ill call later and see if they offer anything else or im off to xfinity

Finally did it a couple of weeks ago - 4th year in a row where I got Sunday Ticket and Red Zone for free. Still with 1 year left on my contract.

As stated above, the key is finding the right person and chatting them up on personal stuff. I seem to have much better results with the female reps. I never once had to threaten to cancel, etc. Just asked, "Can you help me out?", talked about our new baby coming, etc.

It probably helped that I delayed the call and already made a couple of automatic payments on the Sunday ticket thing - so they got some extra $$ out of me.

Any advice to someone thinking about switching to DirecTV? Can I do any better than the low price for twelve-month deals they sent me in the mail?

So the only offer right now is $15 a month discount and the rest of Sunday ticket, which I don't want. They won't give me the League Pass (which I do want).

When will Google TV get here?

the best ything to do is look at all other services in your area, find the absolute best deal, and have direct tv beat it

I just cancelled my DTV and went to xfinity. saving more money, getting more channels and a much more improved internet

Same here, have had some issues with the X1 getting flaky on me but the Internet is solid at 100Mb consistently.

the best ything to do is look at all other services in your area, find the absolute best deal, and have direct tv beat it

I just cancelled my DTV and went to xfinity. saving more money, getting more channels and a much more improved internet
Same here, have had some issues with the X1 getting flaky on me but the Internet is solid at 100Mb consistently.
guy just installed it Friday the wifi is spotty on my top level. he installed it in the basement next to the airducts so im assuming the ducts are screwing with the signal. guy coming back out Saturday to fix it

going from a Directv paired with a verizonl dsl (3mb) for $170 total to Premium package xfinity 150mb/10 for $125

not too bad

Nothing ground breaking, but my bill climbed to $125 after my last promo ended. I called today and got it back down to $91 and three months of some channels I'll probably never watch (DIRECTV® HD EXTRA PACK). Yes, they added a year to my contract, but what do I care?
