Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (1 Viewer)

I've got the ATT unlimited data package due to also having a Directv account. They aren't billed together, but supposedly they check each month that I still have Directv at my address. If I do not, they switch me to 10GB plan and charge $15 per GB overage.

My question, is anyone else on this plan? If you setup a cancel, cancel for a night and then re-up as a "new" customer the next day with the great deal script has this changed anyone's ATT plan? We use about 30GB a month, so that is a pretty large sum of money if it would cancel my unlimited data package.

So i chatted with a rep the other day just to make sure when the first sunday ticket installment was charged and the told me in Sept 2. That is the 13th month of my contract when all my other discounts run out. I got my Aug 2nd bill and they already charged me the first installment. Irritating. At least i have another good reason when i call and start the process of angling for a deal.

The reps that aren't on the customer save line are both clueless and low-end beef.

You can't trust anything they tell you.

I have about 4 mths left on a contract and my discounts ran out last month.  Reading through this thread I see two different approaches - but just to clarify, when you call to cancel, do you have to wait for the disconnection - or can the re-up be done prior to disconnection?
Varies, but its the same outcome for the most part, I set up cancellation and called after the email, he gave me all the offers but said he could not apply them until the next day after I am disconnected.

Got what I think is a better deal.

$52 off a month, Free ST Max, $200 Visa GC, 3 mo of movie stations.
Did they end up calling or did you call them?

They offered me the 50 bucks for 12 months, I set up a cancellation date for next wed hoping to get what you got, I'm out of town through the weekend anyways next week.

They never called so I said I got the "bigdeal" email and rattled off what I listed. The only thing she had to get approval on was the movie channel promotion. It was $42 off my bill and $10 off for auto-payment to equal $52.

I don't know what I got but it seemed like a good deal. I didn't hold out for the $200 gift card though so probably could have done better.

K, just called and set the cancel date for August 20.

What do you say for the $200 GC?

I got an email to come back and they offered a package called "bigdeal".

ST Max for free,  $52 off my bill, $200 visa gift card and movie channels in exchange for a 12 month agreement. Can you set that all up for me?

Got it, thanks.

So I should probably move my cancel date up to tomorrow.  Sounds like service has to be cancelled before receiving the BIG Deal.

Set my cancellation for tonight at midnight. Figured why wait?

Sweet girl from Idaho took my call. I'm out of contract for years with old equipment. :X  I knew it was old but I didn't want to extend my contract before for the Genie and I didn't want to lose my saved programs. She said I don't need to send the DVRs back, just the Access Cards.

Currently grandfathered in with Choice Xtra Classic with two HD DVRs. I always find it interesting to see what people are offered. I was offered three different deals.

Offer 1: $40 off for 12 months, no contract.

Offer 2: Free Genies plus $20 off per month for 24 months.

Offer 3: $45 off for 12 months with a 12 month contract.

No thanks. Now we wait.

I should have put the above in quotes because those are the exact lines I used with the directv rep. That's all I said, followed by the occasional "thank you" as she was confirming it all when it was showing up on my account screen.

Anyone having any luck getting the BIGDEAL if you are still in contract and setup a cancel date (but don't actually cancel)?  Just curious.

2 year contract with 3 months left.  I just called and was offered $50.00 for 12 months with STM.  CSR spun it that I will pay for ST Max (45.00 for 6 mos) so 5.00 savings for 6 months the 50.00 off for the remaining 6 mos.  She then stated they had a fire alarm and all CRS's were being forced off and that I needed to call back.  I could hear the alarm in the background, she wasn't bluffing.

I'll call back in a few and wondering if I should push for more.  I'm pretty happy getting STM for free (basically) with an additional 6 months with 50.00 off.

I would like to know this as well...

Here's what I ended up with.  Called back and got retention.  CSR offered me something completely different and keep in mind I am still under contract until November.  NFL Sunday Ticket Max for free...no strings attached.  $40.00 off current bill for 12 months and no contract extension.  So when my contract ends in November I will be month to month.

I reiterated the above several times and got the confirmation each time.

Can't argue with that at all.  Very happy customer.

I always dread this time of year where I have to call up Directv.  I actually start to get some palpitations before picking up the phone.  Anybody else hate making this yearly phone call?

Called this time, spoke to a guy who would lower Sunday Ticket Max from $60 a month for 6 payments to $36 a month for 6 payments.  So I'd still be paying $216.  Said no thanks, that's not enough to keep me as a customer, so then he offers to send me to retention department.

Spent ten minutes with retention and the deal I ended up with was $50 off bill for 12 months ($600) and the first month of Sunday ticket for free ($45).  I did have to agree to go from ST Max down to regular ST, but apparently this year, even regular ST allows you to stream on your phone or tablet, which is the only reason I wanted Max before.  ST Max gives you the Red Zone channel, the Shortcuts compressed game channel, and some new Fantasy analysis channel, none of which I would watch.  I still end up having to pay for five installments of ST.

So to summarize:

Credits to me: $50 x 12, + $45 = $645

Still have to pay: $45 x 5 = $225

Net gain: $420

I'm perfectly fine with that.  Last year, my haul was a little bigger.  Got free ST Max ($360), a $200 gift card, and $10 off for 12 months.  So $680.  Seems like others have come out of this phone call with a $1160 net.  And I see up above that a poster turned down the same $50 off for 12 months and set-up a cancellation date.  I probably could have done that, but honestly, I just don't want to deal with the hassle and don't want to go through the motions or even worse, have service turned off for even a day.   I'm up $420 from this morning, so it's still a good outcome.

No reason to get nervous about it. Make a game of it and remember they work for you.

Also you can always hang up if it's not going your way.

It took you longer for you to type that up than you spent on the phone.

A little more effort and you get free ST, the GC and the 3 months of movie channels.

I don't know, I type pretty fast.  I just hate "playing the game" and can't believe that after all these years, Directv doesn't call you out on it.

Although I said several times that "you gave it to me free last year" and "I feel like I got more from you last year in reward for my loyalty", the retention rep wouldn't budge aside from throwing in the first month free.  My only other option at that point was to set up cancellation.  Seems like a bunch of posters here actually set a date and some even had their service cancelled.  As I said, that's just not worth the hassle to me.

The way I see it, rather than being -360, I'm +440.  So that's an $800 swing for me and for 10 minutes of time, I'll take it.  I know it's not the best deal, but I've gotten some pretty darn good deals over the years as well, with a little more effort and a little more sweet talking.  Just have too much happening on a Saturday that I did a quick cost-benefits analysis in my head and can accept the final outcome.

I was just poking you a little.  I couldn't get anywhere with retention without cancelling so you got a lot more than I got without cancelling.

About cancelling?  It's a giant Meh.

They turned it off at midnight and I spent less than 10 minutes on the phone with them to get everything and get the service turned back on.

Yeah its not a big deal to cancel and set back up.  It was off from midnight to noon.  15 minute call got me like 1200 bucks worth of stuff.

I agree...all I did is threaten to cancel. Then the next day i got the email asking what it will take to stay with them and to call. Didn't even have to haggle...they just gave the $50 off and ST Max. No doubt worth setting up a cancel date just to get the email.

It seems like it is very random what they offer and what steps you have to go through - set up cancellation date, wait for cancellation, wait for email, etc.  Seems odd to me that Directv doesn't have some kind of script that they go through and it does really seem to be at the whim of the customer service retention rep that you get.  Perhaps there is a more complex formula they have factoring in how long you have been a customer, what current package/programming you have, etc.

While some of you scored because you got the free ST plus money plus gift card, then there's people like johnnyrock who are without service all weekend.  Mrs. greyhorse would have killed me if she couldn't watch the Olympics because I was haggling over some dollars.  johnnyrock, I probably would have taken option 3, which would have been $540 in your pocket, but that's just me.

Edited to add:  Just curious, for those of you who do go through the cancellation process, do you cancel every year and then resign up later?  It seems like you would lose some leverage if they know you will do that every year.  Even when I call, they look back through the account and mention that they see I called last year around this same time to discuss ST.  I guess in the end Directv just wants you as a customer and will bend to keep you.

Did you call back during the day Friday or Saturday?

Call and tell them you got the email even if you didn't, all you have to say is you are disconnected and got an email wanting you back..... Call the correct number 1-855-407-3110

That's the plan but I haven't called with a busy weekend. Then I thought it would be nice to have the email wording. That's just me. It's easier to bs when you have the true keywords.  But no doubt I'm calling because I'm all-in. I already canceled.

I have never gotten an email and have been shut off at midnight twice (hell last time - the main receiver never even shut off).

I called when I woke up the next morning and was up and working with ALL the DEALS within minutes.

Struck out with them yesterday. Called to cancel Sunday Ticket for the season and HBO. Thought they may try and offer me a discount on the Ticket, but nada. HBO they tried to give me $7/month off, but I still don't want to pay $11/month for a channel I watch once a week.

Guys, you're making this too difficult.

1. Cancel service (don't worry about the contract. Agree to pay the $20 a month early cancel fee and when you sign back up it is waived)

2. After service is cancelled call and reference "bigdeal" email.

3. Ask for the $52 off a month, ST Max for free, $200 Visa GC and movie channels.

4. Profit

yep...same as it's been for the last 2-3 years...

Was on vaca last week and Call DTV was on my To Do List. I simply said I was calling to see what they could do about reducing my monthly bill. I was not under contract. They gave me $50 off per month, Free HBO for 3 months and Free ST+. They also “upgraded” my service (to the Entertainment package I think she called it – previously was grandfathered into some “Choice” package which they no longer offer).  I mentioned that I watch NESN (local Red Sox) a lot, and ESPN, NFL.  I was happy with the offer and accepted a 12 month contact, my bill was supposed to be $54 per month. However, after the “upgrade” I found that I no longer had NESN, CSSNE (Celtics) or Big10 Network. So I went online and added the sports package back on at $13.99 per month. Gained the Longhorn Network, which I had wanted (Hook ‘em!) so happy about that. Still no Big 10, but figure I’ll call them when college hoops starts up and see if I can get that added.

One thing I forgot to add was to remember to include a referral account number.  They will get the -$10/Mo, but at least someone is getting it.

Just put in the call to disconnect service.  Date set up for Friday.  Planning my call back on Wednesday/Thursday.

After an unsuccessful phone call, I just set up my cancellation for Thursday.

Is there anyone who's received the BigDeal email who'd be willing to forward it to me so I can reference it if I need to?

stubacca22@gmail.com

Called on Monday and didn't get anywhere.  Set up a cancellation for Friday.

Never received a call or e-mail and service was actually cut off on Friday.  I had 10 months left on my 24-month contract.

Called on Saturday (855-407-3110) and just asked if I would be eligible for the Big Deal before I send all of my equipment back.  Never insinuated that I had received an e-mail from Directv.

After answering several questions about my viewing habits, I was offered:

Choice Extra on a 12-month contract

$37 credit for 12 months

$10 credit for 24 months

Free Sunday Ticket

Free Movie Channels for 3 months

$200 gift card

Whole thing took about 15 minutes.

So just made the call to cancel...got a nice rep who offered $35 off a month for 12 months and $10 off HBO - Showtime package, which would have put my bill at an acceptable amount...the kicker was the Sunday Ticket. I asked about it, and she said all she could do was regular price. Had she given it up, I would have taken the deal. Now its gonna cost em more. Shut off scheduled for this Thursday.

I gave you a chance, DTV, now you can pay me $200 and give me ST Max on top of those other discounts. Talk to ya soon.

I guess they dont realize that Im kind of a #BigDeal

2 hours after setting up my cancellation for this Thursday, I got a phone call from Direct TV.

Asked me why I was leaving and my viewing habits.

Got the same thing everyone seems to be getting... Ultimate package for $86 per month for a year, $200 Visa card, and free Sunday Ticket Max

Until next year, Direct TV...
