Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (1 Viewer)

Cancelled on wed night and just called (I'm out of town not even sure if it was off). Same deal everyone else got! (Never got a call or email here either) Pretty pumped to get the gift card being I missed out on it last year. Awesome thread!
was your service actually cut off?

Well I screwed up and upgraded to Genie last week and signed a 2 year contract with nothing to show for it. :bag:  I actually got the deal last year because of this thread too.

Anyway, I called the CR number and told them that my BiL got the Big Deal after threatening to cancel and I wasn't offered anything with my renewal. I've been with DTV since 1995 and she said she would gladly give me the deal but because my line was an active line, she wasn't able to. She told me to call the regular number and see what I could get and that she would monitor my account to make sure I got it and try to see what she could do if I didn't.

Well, the best I was offered after that was $25/month off for 2 years. I told him I'd call back the original CR and see if she could help. I'll wait until next week to see if she really is monitoring my account.

Called and got customer service...I asked to be sent to retentions.  They offered me some discounts but said that they couldn't give Sunday Ticket for free.  I said that I wanted to set up a end service date.  I set it for Aug 22.  Was that too far away?

Also, I am in the middle of a 2 year contract, will that screw things up you think?
I just paid for month 12 beginning of August. I was able to follow the cancel and reconnect for the big deal offer. I did have to actually disconnect to receive it. Had set a date 2 weeks out but next day got an email to call them to ask about big deal. I did and they said their system showed nothing available for me, maybe because disconnect date too far out. Cancelled me last night and said they'd call back this morning which they did and made me the offer. Did have to specifically ask for the gift card.

Good luck.YMMV but so far in this thread it looks like everyone has been successful.

Monitor your account.? That's not going to happen I've been told that many times.

Just finished my call.  Had an older woman, so this call took twice as long.  But it's all good.  Service cancelled as of midnight last night.  Called at lunch referencing the email (that i never received) and got the following:

- $47/mth for 12 mths (choice extra)

- Free ST Max

-  Movies for 3 mths

- $200 gift card (had to ask)

- $80 in cancellation fees waived

Service was turned back on before I was off the call.

Other than having to listen to the rep recap each and every decision two times and then again all of them at the end, it was easy.

Got the call already within the hour.

They gave me everything I wanted plus the $200 gift card after I asked for it.

They are essentially canceling the account as of midnight then re-signing me up as of noon tomorrow.

Thanks for the tips to all in this thread.

@Hurl Bruce So you originally had your cancel date set out a week or so from your first call?  Then they called and they said they will set you up with the BIGDEAL once your service is turned off tonight?

Interesting twist.

That's weird. They wouldn't even tell me the specifics of the offer until after i was disconnected.

I never had to actually cancel my service.  I called Wed and set my cancellation for Sat.  I called the 855 number yesterday saying I got the big deal email and got the same stuff as everyone else.  And to those asking about having a year left on your contract, I had a year left.  And even with the 1 year contract agreement, they said it will still only go till next year, not extending it to 2 years.

Original offer from them was

$50 off for 12 months and 1 year contract
plus $9.99 off 6 payments of NFL max- So $60 buck off ST Max

On Monday, I set cancellation for the 15th

Got tired of waiting for their email or offer so before it was turned off I called the number about the "big deal"

being offered:

$47 rebate- 12 months
ST Max

no gift card but really don't care.  Just want the bill under $100 (now at $86, multiple TVs, genie, etc) and free STMax

I set my date for Aug 22nd.  I'm sure it didn't make a difference, but I felt better in my lie if I told them that I wanted to wait until the Olympics were over.

When I got the call back, Juan was looking for ways to get me the discounts I wanted.  He started looking for what I received in the past and to see if I had ever received certain offers.  This went on for a few minutes until I just said, "What if I just cancel as of right now and you sign me up as a new customer?"

He said that that was essentially what he was doing and said he was going to then fill out the paperwork to switch my cancel date.  That's when he ran down all of the discounts I would be getting which included the $10 off a month for autopay, free NFL Sunday ticket max, and a couple other things.  He said that someone will come in tomorrow, see the "new subscriber" paper there and reactivate my account with the new discounts.

I then asked them if they were still doing the gift cards, and he said that he could throw that in as well.

He gave me a number to call if service isn't back on tomorrow by around noon.  He also said I would have to call billing once I am getting my free STMax so the past two installments for that package can be refunded.

This is what happened to me as well.  My change in service is just altering the second year of my deal instead of having to re-up for another 2 years.

Went to Walmart just now and DirectV had a booth setup hawking this BIGDEAL offer.  I asked if I canceled my service with them right then would I be eligible to reupp as a new customer with the BIGDEAL offer.  She said yes, but I would have to do it with a phone operator because she was only setup to able to add new customers never having had the service.

Non NFL fans, if you like Hockey you can get free Center Ice Hockey package  instead...or probably the NBA or MLB package. This has been confirmed.

My sister called me yesterday to ask me how I always get these deals form DTV, so I explain to her what to do and what she would get. She didnt care about the ST MAX, so I told her to try to get the NHL Center Ice package instead since her whole family are hockey nuts. I told her they might not be able to do it, but why not ask since theyre giving crazy deals...

Shes not under contract, so she called today to set the cancel date for tomorrow night. 2 hours later they call her asking what they can do to keep her, and they offer her $40 off for a year. She says "Well, I hear Dish is giving gift cards to new customers" and they say "Oh, we can give you a $200 gift card, as well as free Sunday Ticket". She tells them she doesnt watch football but shes a huge hockey fan, and asks if theyd give her the Center Ice package instead. They say nope, cant do it. She says ok bye and they ask her to hold. They come back and offer Center Ice at half price. She says nope, bye...so they put her on hold again and come back and say OK, we'll give you Center Ice for free, as well as the $200 gift card and $40 off/month for a year. She of course took the deal.

She just called me excited as hell to thank me. I have no idea why they called her so quick, but it shows that you dont have to wait for the cancel date to get the deal in some instances, and you can sub other sport packages for the Ticket if you want.

On phone now setting up cancel for this Friday...she hasn't even offered me any discount. Just offered to suspend my account for up to 6 months. I've got 10 months left on contract. First time they never offered a single discount (even $5 off). No worries...I can't wait for the Big Deal offer!
Service shut off yesterday. Had 10 months left on contract with Choice package and 2 receivers (wireless genie) Bill had gone to $102 after 1st year discounts came off. I never received phone call or email I just called 855-407-3110  and talked to a nice rep named Chris. Told him we recently disconnected and were wondering if we are eligible for the Big Deal offer since we are big football fans. He was super helpful and immediately offered:

Free Sunday Ticket Max

$35 off Choice package for 12 months

$10 off autopay discount for 12 months

$200 Visa gift card for the time and trouble it took for calling in to lower bill

Free movie channels for 3 months

12 month agreement (old contract and cancellation fees of $200 are wiped out)

New monthly charges $60.96+tax for a year. Easier than it's been in the past! Service back up and running after a 15 minute phone call!

Anyone had success getting the deal with still having a year or a little less left on their contract?  Just wondering because last year I got it with still having a yeear left on my contract.  Wondered if they were still being this generous again this year.
Year left on contract doesn't matter at all. Just cancel service and as soon as you are cancelled call 855-407-3110 and ask for Big Deal. (does not matter if you get a call or email from them) Couldn't be simpler! I just did it!

They gave me $40 per month for 12 months so they can bill me for $360 over 6 months.  And they took another $7 per month off the main bill.

Not my best work, but I'm actually starting to feel a little sorry for them

Just thought I would share my experience.

Called Friday night after reading this thread. Sharing with first rep that I wanted to cancel got me to retention. He offered $50 off a month for 12 months while I paid the 6 installments of $45 for Sunday Ticket. Refused that offer and set a cancellation date for Tuesday at 12 midnight since the family is not home during the day on Tuesday. Figured that would give me most of the day Tuesday to wait for Big Deal email before kids started complaining about not being able to watch.

Received 4 calls from retention today. Missed first 3 and answered the fourth time. Rep said she could offer to move me off my grandfathered Choice Xtra Classic package and onto the Xtra package. She would then be able to offer $37 off a month for 12 months and another $10 off a month for 12 months. Offered that first as she said it was the "easier" discounts to check on and would then work on Sunday Ticket. Came back with Sunday Ticket Max for free. Told her I had heard they were offering $200 Visa Gift Cards and asked if I qualified for that offer. She said yes, if I agreed to a 1-year contract. Agreed to that. Did not push for movie channels as we never find anything we want to watch on them.

Overall

$47 off for 12 months

Free Sunday Ticket Max

$200 Visa Gift Card

New 1-year contract

This is much better than I did last year, and I base it off the fact that I actually set a cancellation date.

They didn't make me get the 2 year deal, though, so I can come back and do the same next year.

What I need to do next is call billing and have the money I already on the Sunday ticket credited back to my account.

Question for those who have done it with the cancel method:  Do you do this same thing every year...setting the cancel date and then getting everything you want?  This is the first year I have actually had to set a cancel date to get something that I was happy with.

Yes - I had to physically cancel both this year and last to get the deal.

I never got an email or a call.  I just called them the morning after the midnight disconnect and easily got the deal ...zippo before that.

Yup, Ive done this every year for the past 9-10 years. This is the first time I had to cancel, but it was painless (even more painless than other years), and service was shut off for about 12 hours total, during which I didn't need to watch any TV.

Yeah, sorry. It was a 1 year extension. See where I miswrote it and correcting now.

Pretty much same deal for me.  I got a call before service disconnected to let me know that I had to wait til it was actually disconnected for discounts to be available.  Service disconnected late last night.  I called them and got deal above.  200 gift card wasn't initially offered, but I asked and it was granted.  Sweet!

Called Friday, they wouldn't budge. Got offered $40 off for 12 months $28 off premium channels for 3 months., no Sunday ticket. Hung up to try again.

Called yesterday, they still wouldn't budge, had the same offer. Started to set up a cancellation date, but I couldn't finish the call,  I had an unexpected meeting. Hung up.

Called after the meeting to complete the cancellation. They immediately gave me $50 off for 12 months, and sunday ticket max, with a 1 yr contract. I was satisfied with that offer.

Just one thing to note for those deciding between setting up cancel date in future & cancel immediately.

Last year, I set up a cancel in the future & called the special number before that date responding to the email & was able to get all of the goods except the movie channels, including the $200 GC.  I do remember there were some who tried that later & the $200 GC offer had expired.  This year, I wanted to make sure that didn't happen & I cancelled immediately & called the special number the following day & got all of the goods except the movie channels, including the $200 GC.  The one difference is that last year, by re-upping before actually cancelling, they still had me listed as a customer since 2003 or whatever ungodly length of time I've been paying these guys.  This year, they now have me as service since 2016.

Given that they really don't give out much in the way of discounts without actually playing the cancel game , I don't think it will make any difference - but just so you know if you actually cancel you lose whatever status or satisfaction a "customer since" x time would get you.  Which, as far as I can tell, is not much.

Carry On!

How do we activate the receipt of the gift cards. We have to apply with a code or something somewhere right? I remember doing that as a new customer a year ago. I wasn't given any such thing this time and forgot to ask. I don't think they just send it right?

They just sent me mine last year and I activated the card like normal. No website nonsense.

I could not be satisfied if I knew everyone else was getting 200 bucks for free to spend on anything.

Eh, I mean sure, I could have pressed for more and more than likely gotten it. In the end though, the wife got what she wanted (reduction in billing) and I got what I wanted, the ticket. It was win/win for us. The gift card wouldve been nice no doubt, but I'm not going lose any sleep in not getting it.

Nope, just $200

If you cancel, does retention call you before shutting your service down or do you have to turn your service off in order to get the big deal?

Mine was shut off for three days and no one called (I was out of town so I didn't care, the return empty boxes actually showed up today), others have said they got a call beforehand. when I called them to turn it back on it took a total of 8 mins on the phone start to finish. Just call and cancel it tonight, I waited last year to long and missed out on the GC but got the other discounts.

Lol that's just great. Well I think it's on it's way.
I think you're looking at the last time you got a gift card. I did the same at first with mine as i had one listed in January. It took them months to send mine because someone screwed up. Hopefully this time it's quicker.
