Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (2 Viewers)

I can't even get them to waive my upfront $99 fee for a 3rd Genie receiver, or upgrade me to the HR54 box this time around.  They're literally not giving me anything.  Such a bad taste I may ACTUALLY cancel and go to Dish.  Retention guy offered me $5/mos off my bill for 12 months.

I called last month as my first year promotions were about to drop off.  Was told there was nothing they could do so I asked to cancel.  Got sent to "loyalty" and was told that she wouldn't be able to do anything that month, but after the first year passed, to call back.  In the meantime, $40 credit applied for the following month to keep me around.

Called last week and I was basically told they couldn't do anything so I set up cancellation on Oct 9th, the day before my next bill due date.  I got a call back a couple days ago, we got disconnected after a few minutes, and she never called back.  Today I got the email with the 855 number and called.  I was told he would have to process the cancellation in order to get this deal, but it would get done tonight, then back up tomorrow morning.  Offered the following:

$45 off/month (currently on Choice)
Free Sunday Ticket Max
Free premium movie channels for 3 months
$200 Visa GC

My contract is still only good for one more year (did not extend it) so in one year when this falls off, I'll be out of contract.  I said go ahead.  Took about 15 minutes on the phone.

Called the standard 800 number and said cancel at the first prompt. Ended up getting sassy Kathy (yes it was the 800 DirecTV number). Very friendly and asked if I could get the $45/month in credits back on my account as I was out of contract and would like to get those credits again. She came back and said that she could do that and throw in Sunday ticket for free. Asked about max and best she could do was 1/2 off on that ($45 one time charge). Added Showtime free for 4 months and could've added another premium movie channel but I don't watch many movies and declined since I probably would forgot to cancel it and gotten charged. Showtime will just drop off so no phone call.I asked about the GC but couldn't get that unless I cancelled. Figured it was back where I wanted my bill so took that deal. One year contract.

Finally had to call about gift card that had not been sent (re-upped 8/11/16).  After about 1 hr total on the phone over 2 days, it is on the way.  They apparently cancelled it since I had received the same offer last year (but didn't bother to inform my about it of course).

So, if anyone else still hasn't received their card, might be time to give them a call!

I had ZERO luck this year.  I played the game a lot harder than I ever had.  All I wanted was an upgrade to the HR54 box and a 4K genie mini without paying the equipment upgrade fees.  I'm sorry, but charging $299 for the HR54, and $99 for a 4K mini ON TOP of the monthly "lease" fee and service fees is robbery.  Plus, you "can't" install them yourself and you have to have a tech come do it (for an add'l charge).

After over an hour and a half, and saying "Nope, just cancel me," they finally managed to get my total cost down to $100 for the equipment upgrades, and threw in 6 months of Showtime and upgraded me to ST Max.  Not really what I wanted from the deal, and it extended my contract for 2 years, but I just didn't have the time to deal with them anymore and wanted the add'l box for my new basement home theater.

This whole "paying full price" thing is bull honkey.  I wish somebody could explain why some of you guys are able to get big discounts so easily, while others can't get more than $5/mos in bill credits.

Had this exact scenario two weeks ago.  Called and was on the phone for an hour with 2 reps before they said the manager was approving the release of the card. Still have not seen it. I am canceling as soon as I receive the card, or sooner if I have to call again.

I installed an OTA HD antenna over the weekend and can pull all the network channels (splitter for 4 tvs). I did the trial PS Vue (love it) and now that they are bundling HBO and SHO, it is a no brainer.

Same deal here. Reupped August 11th or so. Called DTV today and was given the number for their reward dept 800-508-1232. I asked what the deal was with my gift card, and right away the guy asks if I got one last year. I said yes. He said ok, let me fix this for you, put me on hold for a few minutes and came back and said he processed it and Id get it within 3 weeks.

So more of the waiting game, but for some reason I think it will actually come this time.

Is there currently a "free HBO" thing going on?  I upgraded my equipment over the weekend, and all of a sudden, I get HBO, Cinemax and Showtime...I don't have them on my package.

***Gift Card Update***

Like others, I signed up in early August and still hadn't received the $200 gift card. After close to an hour on the phone I was eventually told that the original rep did not enter the gift card to my account and I would not be receiving one. After another 20 minutes I was offered a $100 credit to my bill. I politely declined and told her if she made the credit for the full $200 that I would be fine. Put on hold for about 5 minutes and she says she applied the credit. I was still skeptical until I received the conformation email last night.

What a struggle compared to prior years...

I resumed service on 8/2 and still hadn't received my card. I finally got around to calling today and the guy told me it had been sent back in August via UPS and was showing as delivered. Strange though that from my end neither the reward department's automated phone system or the rewards section of the website had any record of them ever having sent me anything. After 10 minutes, I was able to get him to issue me a $200 bill credit. Hopefully it actually shows up and that will be the end of it.

for those that haven't received the gift card, here is what i had to do.

i called direct tv, retention department.  here's what they told me.

call 800 288 9983.  this is visa, the reward card department.  you will need your direct tv act number.  they look up your account and will send out the card after verifying that you are due to receive one.  i was on hold for 15 minutes or so, but the conversation with visa took less than 5 minutes.  up to 3 weeks to generate and process.

i still haven't received it, but it should arrive this week or next.

another heads up.  make sure they didn't add a whole home dvr charge to your bill.  they did with mine and unless you have a genie, it's not needed

Mother #######g Direct TV blocked HD channels to my basement TVs where I have a splitter with CAT 5 wires connecting both TVs behind the walls. I have one box that broadcasts the same channel to two TVs at once.

Anyone else ever see the "content protection" message?

This setup worked for over two years and stopped within the last month or two. (I don't use the basement enough)

Leaked email from Directv to their installation technicians.  The streaming service available this November that Directv would like to keep hidden from customers that pay for a satellite dish in their yard:

As you may have heard, AT&T is launching a new over-the-top (OTT) service called DIRECTV NOW on November 4, 2016. OTT services provide potential customers with a streaming-only option when they are unable to have traditional DIRECTV or U-Verse TV service installed.

Though DIRECTV NOW does not require professional installation, technicians may want to be aware of the service and what it entails. For instances where a DIRECTV or U-Verse installation cannot be completed due to line-of-sight, landlord permission or other issues, technicians can provide information on the DIRECTV NOW service and let customers know they can visit directvnow.com to learn more.

Please note that DIRECTV NOW is a completely separate offering from traditional DIRECTV and U-Verse and should only be mentioned to customers when those services cannot be installed. If the customer is able to receive broadcast TV service, technicians should not proactively mention DIRECTV NOW as it is redundant with the DIRECTV and U-Verse Apps, which still offer streaming capabilities to subscribers of the DIRECTV and U-Verse TV services respectively.

Key points to keep in mind for DIRECTV NOW:

The DIRECTV App is still available to DIRECTV satellite TV customers. DIRECTV NOW is a completely separate service.

No set-top box is required to utilize DIRECTV NOW. Instead, customers can stream content via iOS and Android mobile devices, Web browsers, as well as streaming media players that connect to the TV like Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Stick, and Chromecast. More streaming options are expected to be available in the future.

DIRECTV NOW offers programming packages that are similar to those of traditional DIRECTV service. No annual contract is required. Add-on packages like HBO are also available. More information is available at directvnow.com.

Customers need high-speed broadband service to stream content at a high quality. It is recommended that DIRECTV NOW be used with 12 Mbps broadband at a minimum. Customers can take advantage of a free 7 day trial by visiting directvnow.com if they are unsure whether they have broadband service capable of streaming content, or just want to get a feel for the service.

I would imagine just about everyone in here would switch over to DirecTV Now, right?

Only thing I can see, is that if you currently have DTV or can get it, they'll force you to get the regular service instead of DTV Now.

How can they force you to do anything?  You can always cancel the regular service and then sign up with the new streaming service when available.

No idea. I could just see them trying to push that.

As far as local channels, that will be the big selling point, IMO. If there are no local channels, it'll be hard to switch. Recording isn't a huge issue since just about ever channel has an app now that has past episodes and such.

local channels and recording are important to me.  There are still a TON of channels that don't have apps to support this and even the ones sometimes have time limits on how long shows are available for and which shows they choose to archive.

If DTV solves both of those in a simple manner, then the switch decision is going to be simple for me (assuming the roll out is not filled with bugs).

I don't think they will be able to force anything other than to honor existing contracts, which some people will be stuck with almost two years if they've recently renegotiated.  The leaked email just shows how they are trying to keep the new service quiet to those who already have dishes, which shows what a scummy company they really are.

For me, local is definitely a priority. Recording is nice, but not a total deal breaker.

Though I agree, if DTV Now has both local channels and the ability to record, it's a no-brainer to switch.

I don't understand.  I thought the CEO announced this in front of a WSJ panel with full knowledge that this was going to get publicized.  Why would he have announced this if he wanted to hide the information?

At least I think it is a no brainer.  I still need to factor in that I need to spend significantly more on my internet package than I have today.   It would be interesting if they bundled together this new service with some internet packages from U Verse to create really attractive pricing.

How will Direct TV now handle recording and will the local channels be available?
The last I've read is that they were working on including local channels.  They should be in a much better position to get quickly deals done with local stations than their competitors were.  Really all they are doing is changing the delivery method.

Recording or on demand?  I assume the on demand will be similar or the same.  I'm not familiar with directv dvrs, but, there is a growing market for streaming dvrs that could easily replace whatever directv hardware you have.

I was asking more about recording.  I agree the on demand should stay the same as it is.

Right now my family records a ton of shows and watches them when ever they want to.  That would be an important dynamic to replace for our situation.

Am I right in assuming that DTV will just become another app that you can access on Roku, PS4, Amazon Fire etc?

If someone did come out with a whole house DVR system to support the streaming service, that would be fantastic.

Yes, I read somewhere that the Roku app wasn't quite ready a couple of weeks ago, but they will get there.  They want to compete with Sling and Vue so they're going to have to come to their places of business.

Cord Cutters News has received a report that says DirecTV Now will miss the November 4th release date. It is our understanding that the hold up is a combination of technical and contract issues......Hopefully we will get some DirecTV Now news early next week.

Have had enough with AT&T and the note 7/direct tv debacle.

Already had my contract redone within the month after acquiring both. Then no gift card or tablet free as promised. Spent 14 hours of my time at the store or on the phone with incompetent employees numerous times.  Havent been able to use the 23 GB direct tv stream after I got the 2nd note 7 and havent wanted to call bc so annoyed. Still have to return it but have been busy and it dreading another 2 hour wait on my off day esp when only off day I help a friend with a side business

Anyway out of this contract?  Initial deal Aug 24. Then new deal believe early 2nd week of Sept.

So a month later and STILL no gift card. I called the number and it still says its "being processed"

This is ridiculous.

After multiple calls to find out the status of the gift card , I finally got an email today that it shipped on Fri. Hope to receive it this week and then I'm canceling directv. Next step is to pay off our phones and get out from under AT&T .

Just called to cancel my 3-months of free movie channels and they said they added an extra free month. Add another $53.99 to this years' haul.

Anyone going to try and play them against themselves with the DirecTV Now offering? Why am I going to pay $83/month for the satellite service when I can pay $35/month for DTV Now?

Unless I missed it, I would think the big thing for the Now service would be sports.  I rarely watch TV shows live, so the streaming only service makes sense, unless there is no ESPN/sports package, or only certain network shows are available, and not the sports coverage.

Details of DirecTV Now streaming service accidentally leaked to the public

"As far as sports are concerned, expect to see ESPN, FS1 and NBCSN will be part of the lineup and there will be TBS and TNT for MLB and NBA games."

Is there still a DVR involved with Now? I saw the leak but haven't researched it yet.

That would be tough for me. I hate the Directv DVR and prefer my old TiVo but I can't imagine not having a DVR.
Yeah, this doesn't work for me if we're not able to DVR. I am sure "watch on demand within 72 hours" will involve forced commercials with no fast forwarding. We usually don't watch recorded shows within 72 hours, often a series will pile up for a few weeks. The wife and kids are trained to pull up the list and watch the shows they record. Even if they can offer every single channel we want for $35 a month as live TV, we rarely watch live TV, except for sports. It isn't a replacement for how we currently watch TV.

Another call today, and this time I was told my GC was approved and will be mailed next week. I suspect Ill be calling in 2 weeks again.

Im about done with DirecTv.
