Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (4 Viewers)

They call me last week in order to try to lock me in to a contract. Offered $20 off my bill but I had to agree to a two year commitment. I laughed and said 'last year you had to offer me about $35 in monthly bill credits and Sunday ticket free to get me locked in for one year. What makes you think $20 in credits per month would lock me in to two years'?

Well I am officially a DISH customer. I called 2 times within the past 2 weeks and the best offer I received was 4 months of free Showtime. I'm not under contract and they didn't offer me even a small credit or half off anything. I called DISH and scheduled an installation date because they had a decent startup promotion. I called Directv just now to schedule a cancellation date and the guy had absolutely no interest in keeping me as a customer. He didn't offer anything additional or make even a remote attempt to keep me. Not sure how all of you got such great promotions but nothing worked for me  . Oh well--with the current promotion that DISH is offering, I'm not sure Directv could have offered me enough anyways. I'll just watch my football at a bar.

At a bar? Didn't you just have a baby? Your not going to a bar all day for football.

If I project the cost going forward over the 2 year contract period, I will be paying essentially the same amount for the same programming package. However, the cost for DISH includes HD for 2 years, the Hopper, the 3 month trial period for HBO, Cinemax, Show, etc, and the 3 month blockbuster program. If Directv had even offered me a small discount or anything at all, it may have swayed my decision.

By the start of football season, he'll be 2 months old. Not old enough to come with me?

They promised to try to not suck anymore.

DTV customer since 2006.

Just got off the phone with them - my yearly song and dance - blah blah my wife is complaining about the bill, blah blah, competitor is offering a similar package + the Red Zone channel for half of what DTV is currently charging us, blah blah, will have to terminate DTV if something isn't done.

Transfered me right to Retention. Outcome . . .

$20 off the monthly bill for the next 12 months

$5.00 off HBO for the next 6 months.

FREE Sunday Ticket MAX ($349 Value) includes Red Zone and the mobile app.

boom

Sell it - have pain in your voice, blame it on the wife, connect to whoever picks up the phone, be nice, etc.

Really not that difficult

And ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS ask the following question in any Sales/negotiating situation . . .

"Is that the best you can do?"

I definitely tried the bold and all of the other tactics you listed. Although I'm not sure I sold the pain in my voice but I definitely blamed it on my wife. Last year, I had no issues but this year they wouldn't budge no matter who I talked to. I never even got transferred to retention. Do I have to ask for that? I've only been a customer since 2010 and my bill is usually only around $70-$90 a month so maybe that hurt me? Oh well--maybe in 2 years they'll consider me a new customer

Definitely ask for Retention.

If you do not like the person on the phone say "I have someone at the door - need to call back"

Call back a day later or a couple of days later.

Have a quote from a competitor ready.

After 3 calls of zero offers, I went the chat route posted in the shark pool DTV thread and ended up with what I ultimately wanted - Regular Sunday Ticket for free (well, almost. Its costing me $9)

Went to the chat link in the Shark Pool thread, and once in chat got offered $15 off for 6 months ($90 total) right off the bat. I said that was great, and asked if there were any deals for the Ticket. She said non other deals available for me. I said I don't care about the Max, I just want the regular Ticket, what can she do. She said shes limited on what she could give in chat but gave me a phone number and PIN to an account specialist.

Called the number, got a nice girl who, after some chit chat, she asked to confirm that I was interested in the regular ticket and not Max, and I confirmed. She offered the regular ticket for $99, as well as a one time instant $90 credit because she couldn't find the $15/6 deal the girl in chat offered.

So, although I didn't make out like a bandit like I have in the past, all I really wanted was the Ticket, I didn't care about lowering my bill. Mission accomplished.

For those that have had no luck, check out the DTV thread in the Shark Pool and try the chat option. Its worked for several people.

Just called them and started conversation by saying I wanted to get rid of Sunday ticket and find out when my contract is up. The guy said another department would have to handle both of those. Retention I'm assuming.

A very normal, nice, not pushy at all guy named John that is a Florida state fan helped me. Turns out my contract had just ended. I did mention comcast who I already have internet with was running a bundle special I wanted to look at, but I was happy with DTV. I was getting rid of Sunday ticket because they made us start paying extra for red zone which is mainly what I watch.

Without any pressure from me he got my bill down $50 from $137 to $87 for 12 months, gave me HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime for 3 months and 28 days ( bill cycle worked out good for me), and Sunday ticket max free. None of this required a re-up of the contract. I could upgrade all my equipment to genie (4 boxes) for free, but that would require 24 month contract.

Pretty awesome

I just tried this method and was provided a phone number and pin. I called this retention number and the lady would not offer me anything additional. I mentioned to her that I've heard of people who have received the Sunday ticket free multiple years and she responded "I have never, ever heard of anyone who has received that offering more than once". I asked if they could even knock off a few dollars off my monthly bill and she said not at this time since I'm still under contract for another week. I reminded her that although I'm still under contract for a week, I no longer have to pay an early termination fee so for all intents and purposes my contract is over. She responded with  At the end of the call, she asked who I was switching over to. I mentioned Dish and she said that they don't offer the Sunday Ticket

I like to think that the FFA is just a small sample size and most people have had similar futility as me. In reality, my luck is so bad that this does not surprise me one bit..........

That sucks. I was shocked that I was offered a $90 credit right off the bat when I had zero offers before that. If I were you I'd try one more time with that number and pin, you'll probably get a different CSR.

Maybe you called too and bluffed too many times? I am sure every time we call it is saved in our records.

I hope you at least ordered the Dish install through GWDish, so you got an extra $200.

I didn't know about this but thank you. I'll look into this.

They definitely had it in my records but why should it matter how many times I called? Ultimately I ended up cancelling and they still didn't budge. They're a reputable business so I doubt they would let their ego get in the way. It's in their best interests to do everything possible to retain me as a customer. From my very first call to my last call, they offered me the exact same promotion (4 months showtime free). Even when I was finally put through retention, they claimed they could not make me any additional offers. They weren't even willing to offer a $5 monthly discount. I guess I'm just surprised given the success that most others in here have had. The only reason I can come up with is that they just don't make enough money off of me to bother.

Your monthly bill is a HUGE decision on how much they discount.....mine is $ 220 per month....9 HD receivers....HBO and MAX movie package.....they offer me free Sunday Ticket MAX every year
2 years ago they wouldn't budge for me. At the time I had a $180 monthly bill, 9 HD receivers. Every other year I've been able to get it. I spoke with several different retention specialists...nothing.

Not directv. But I called my internet provider "comcast" yesterday. Less them 5 minutes my bill is now $20 less a month.

Make the call. They won't discount unless you ask.

Well signed up this last January so still under contract till 1/2016, but they gave me Sunday ticket free and the added the max at 1/2 off. All in 10 minutes! Just said Uverse sent me an offer to come back and was checking how much the fee was since I wanted the red zone. Success

How is that possible?!?!?!!? ONLY DTV offers discounts!!! ;)
Always surprised on how many people don't make the call. My brother has had COX cable for over 10 years never called. Same old equipment and price.

Chat link mentioned here from the shark pool post worked perfect for me. Chat offered me 10 off for 12 months but when asked if could do more, offered the account rep pin number. Just called that and that was the least painful attempt at lowering my bill in the 7 years been with them. $35 off in credits and free Max and I didn't have to work hard for it at all. Just said the wife was concerned about the bill since we had to replace a car and the lady was all over trying to find ways to help out.

For reference I got a $20, $5, and $10 for 12 months discounts and she gave me half off Max but will be credited that amount. Very pleased.

Actually enjoying doing this. Being in Sales for so long and having it done to me its nice to turn the tables.

Almost as much fun as shopping for a car.

If I have some free time this afternoon I'll make the call for some of you - conference me in and let's have some fun.

Do this. Would love to see if he you can pull it off for you.

I agree with you. As long as you have the time this kind of stuff is fun.

I'm done derailing this thread with my Debbie downer attitude but I wanted to thank you for this link. I was originally in line for a $25 gift card but thanks to you, I'll be receiving a $200 gift card instead.

I'm having no luck so far this year...I've called 2 or 3 times and have done 2 different chat sessions. One chat got me the 800 number with a PIN number but still no luck. Only had 2 offers..one was $5 off for 12 months and the other was 2 months of Showtime for free. I'm not giving up yet!! Hopefully I find someone willing to give up some better deals.

All done with DTV. Xfinity is being installed on Tuesday. to 105Mb internet and the same channels I get now plus HBO for 100/mth for 2 years.

Where is this chat option? I looked in the help center but I can't find it. Also can't find the thread in the Shark Pool.

It took me forever to find the chat. In fact, I never could find it on the directv website. So I just googled it and found this site, which has a link that takes you right to the directv chat.

Thanks for the info. Just waiting for them to get back to me now.

I got my "special" pin and called and all they offered was $5/month and $100 gift card. Guess I'll try again on Monday.

First chat didn't work. Was only offered $5 per month discount. (Charmaine or something like that)

Trying again. Rhodel M. also started with the $5 per month for 12 month discount (because I do still have some $20 discount from my original 24 month deal that is up in November).

She keeps pushing me to take the $5 per month (which won't extend my contract...which is good)...but hoping to get something else out of this.

She sent me a number and pin thinking they may be able to get a better deal (saying she was limited to what she could offer via chat).

Will try that in a bit as I have to help get the kids in bed.

Brendan tried and tried.

Did get offered $25 off for 12 months. A $25 credit, no reup and Redzone free with an offer to have ST Max for $140 I think.

Thinking they are close to giving me max...but they won't budge yet.

Before I started the process I was paying $191 (inc. taxes) but had $21 in monthly credits so final amount being paid was $170. Also wasn't under contract anymore.

Did the online chat last week but was only offered $10 credit for 12 months and no discount on the Ticket. Received phone number and PIN code, which I called yesterday. Explained I was looking to cut monthly bill and pick up the Ticket at the same time. Was told that if I upgraded current programming package from Ultimate to Premier I would get more channels for the same price ($130/mth.), which was true since I was already paying for HBO/Cinemax/Showtime each month under the Ultimate package. Did the upgrade and then was offered $30 monthly credit for the next 12 months and $5 monthly credit for the next 24 months, along with free Ticket. I asked about getting ST Max but was told I couldn't get it for free, would have to pay the upgrade price. Passed on that for now. Had to agree to 1 year contract, which is fine with me as long as it ends before I have to call next year for the Ticket. Phone call took about 10 - 15 mins., most of which was spent with the agent doing the upgrade and finalizing the deal. Easiest call ever.
