Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (5 Viewers)

1) I moved years ago.

2) Dtv installed at my new location.

3) My account maintained my old address as the new address didn't have locals.

4) locals now available where I live, so I plan to use the script plus moving to get a good deal and new equipment.

Any chance they'll notice that they installed 8 yrs ago for me at my current address and call me out on it?

Just got done with DirectTv. Cancelled a while back. Finally, my cancellation day came.

Got an email confirmation that my account was cancelled. There was a number in the email to call. I called it after a day.

Got $41/month off the choice package. Sunday Ticket Max. Free HBO/Starz/Cinemax for three months. one year contract.

About a 15 minute call.

Had Direct for 4 years.

Called June 4 -- took $10 off per month with no mention of cancellation fees.

June 21 -- received a letter saying cancellation could be up to $120; called and "negotiated" down to $50 after about 20 minutes of BS

Cancellation scheduled for July 5! Keep the fingers crossed!

Gift card #1 has arrived! Don't let anyone tell you something can't be done, fellas. Anything is possible in this world.

Will update on the status of gift card #2 when I know more.

And....I forgot to ask about the $200 gift card. No worries. They just sent me an email with a link to a form to fill out to get my $200 gift card. BONUS!

The gift card is spending nicely over here. Used it on Amazon, at the grocery store, the pizza place and the gas station. Can't wait until the second one comes. I could get used to these prepaid cards.

If I do get the 2nd card and subtract $400 from my annual directv cost, I figured out that I'll be paying roughly $220 for the entire year of service including hbo and sunday ticket max. Also my billing date changed because of the cancellation and haven't had to pay anything since may 4th.

Just called the 877-250-4624 number ...no longer in service. What a cluster #### this is turning out to be so far for me.
Well #### -it just gets worse. My cancellation date is the 29th. I moved it back since my free HBO was to drop off on the 25th. Had to call the regular number and deal with 2 people that could not help and finally got to the "retention dept." Lady called me everything but a liar when I explained

- all my friends were getting the deals described in here while still being customers (ready to disconnect but hadn't).

- that I called to make sure my hbo wouldn't be continued after the 25th and was told they would ensure that - she said "no one does that here sir, its drummed into our heads that you can't pre-cancel, you have to call after the date"

Her offer ...$7 off hbo and 4 months free showtime. "That's all I can do sir - you already have $20 in discounts." I GOT THIS FROM THE ####### RETENTION DEPT!!!!

ETA: $7 off hbo OR 4 months free showtime - ####### ####

Call back and talk to a different person.

I called Direct TV and used the script that I viewed in this thread. I had 10 months remaining on a 24 month contract. I called the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and my cancellation day was 2 weeks away. Unfortunately, after 5 days, I had not received an email or a phone call from DirecTV, so, per the script, I called the 877 "promo" phone number. When I called, I indicated that my brother-in-law had canceled and DirecTV provided some promotions and offers to him, "could you do anything for me?"

The DirecTV agent was very kind. After some negotiating, I got my bill from $142 per month to $78 per month, and kept essentially the same tier of television channels and all services from before. Once I start paying for HBO in 3 months, I think I'll be around $98 per month. I got the free movie channels for 3 months, $200 gift card and Sunday Ticket Max (12 month contract). The agent that I spoke with said he would call within five minutes to confirm everything after we had agreed upon the new pricing and all of the promotions included...no call back.

I called the next day and asked for Brooklyn, that was the name of the agent I spoke with the night before on the phone, who didn't call me back. I was told Brooklyn was on the phone and he would call me back. I gave my name and phone number and did not hear back from Brooklyn within the next two hours, so, I called back. Was told again Brooklyn was on the phone...I then asked to speak to a manager. The manager informed me that I should call the standard DirecTV 1-800 number as I was not in the promotions system.

Now I have to call the 1-800 number. Ugh. After calling the standard DirecTV 1-800 number and getting to the retention department, I was told that the promos that I spoke about with the promotions team were not in the system of the agent who I was speaking with. She told me to call back the 877 number. Suck!!!

After calling the 877 number again, Brooklyn happened to pick up the call. Thank God. Brooklyn was very apologetic, stating that he never called me back because my phone number was not in the system. Apparently, when an agent calls a customer, the call is made from the computer system. If you are not in the database, the agent does not have the ability to call you.

Brooklyn put me on hold for five minutes, figured things out with the manager, and we were good to go. I recently received the $200 gift card. It was a little bit of a pain in the butt, however, well worth it.

Good luck...

Every once in a while you get an idiot. For the most part the people are nice, super helpful and bend over backwards to get you to stay.

Have had DTV since 2004... Last year was the only time I've ever had to pay some money for NFL ST.. And it was still 50% off.. I called yesterday and told to cancel my ST.. I then asked when my contract expired.. She said you're not under contract.. So I said great! She asked if I was going to leave DTV.. Said I was sure thinking about.. Told me to hold out and someone would be in touch with me..

Just disconnect immediately and re-up the next day

Sounds like I'll go the way of letting go it get cut off and then call the next day. Do I call the 877 number then too or will I get a different email or number?

I'm moving the Monday after the 4th. I called and canceled and it is set for the 3rd. I received the Greatdeal1 email but haven't called yet. Email doesn't mention gift card

call the 800 number.

get retention dept.

let them know you want to cancel service. they will sometimes ask why... "too expensive," "see a better deal with dish," going to stream online."

they will typically make an inadequate offer. if they offer everything we have gotten here, go for it.

otherwise, set up a cancellation date for about 2 weeks out.

wait about 3 days.

if you have not gotten a phone call or email, call the 877 number.

tell them you missed a call from them, but heard them offer x,y,z. usually that is about it.

Gift card (that I was never supposed to get) has shipped....what's all this about a 2nd GC now?
It's nothing. There is no 2nd gift card.
I got 2 different forms and mailed them both. Got the first card, waiting on the other. I think it's a glitch where I called the 877 number but was not in the system yet. I told the regular directv lady that I was supposed to get a gift card from the Greatdeal1 offer and she made it happen on her end but it wasn't that specific offer. Then after that first card was processed I got an email for the greatdeal gift card.

Careful man if you get 2 gift cards all of the show on your DVR will be erased.

I don't know what it is you may be a great guy. But they way you wouldn't believe anybody when they were trying to help you out then to turn around and act like you are some kind of great negotiator just rubs me the wrong way.

I hope you get the second card I really do. But I have a feeling your going to be telling us you got the card even if you don't.

:D thank you for that spock.

Follow up for those still interested in negotiating.

For whatever reason after being a 10 yr+ customer (even longer on my phone number ...) they clearly wanted no part of me as an existing customer. So I stick with the disconnect which happened seconds before midnight last night. I get the "confirmation of disconnect" email at 4:59am. I just got off the phone from calling the number in that email that didn't really try and sell me it was mostly about final billing arrangements and return of equipment but the bottom it said

Thanks for being a DIRECTV customer. We're sorry to see you go. It's not too late to stay with the best in video entertainment! Simply call 1-888-550-1562 to come back today.

It was amazingly easy and painless. I got the total deal including the $200 card - as she coached me about how to get around the requirement of an equipment change. She would arrange to have a service guy come out to check to make sure my equipment was working ok. My set up is 3 tvs with hd svc/xtra choice pkg/protection plan/regional sports - paying $93.50 before tax.

So I got

- $60/mo on the Xtra Choice Pkg for 12 mo. - it will auto renew at that discount for another 12 mo. after that as well.

- got an additional $10 off for the first 2 mo. - so it will be $50 mo. the first 2 mo.

- Super Ticket (Max ...I think?)

- 3 mo. free HBO

- $200 gift card

It must be that they are trying to adjust their marketing numbers. No way I get this without completely disconnecting ...for a whopping 12 hours. I still want to find that ##### I talked to that day before yesterday and swing her around by her forked tail.

I cancelled my service on 7-5, they called 7-6 & offered me the select package for 12 months for 51.49 & a one time credit of 30$. Select doesn't have college football (ESPN's) & they wouldn't agree to the choice package for the same price. What is the script? someone help, lol.

Here it is again

Read the script below.

Call 1-800-531-5000

Get to retentions department

Confirm you are in retentions department

Don't bother with their offers and simply request a cancellation 2 weeks out

Confirm cancellation date

Wait to receive "We want you back", "Let us make it right", "blah blah" call or email with special 877-250-4624 number and NEWDEAL1 or NEWDEAL2 code

If you receive that email, great. Go ahead and call in as soon as you receive it.

If you DO NOT receive the email in a few days, call the 877-250-4624 number anyway and tell them you received the email

You may get turned down for "not being in their system" yet

If that is the case, ask if they can get you added to the system

No matter what they say, call back in 48 hours or so and try again

You may still have to haggle with them a bit to get everything listed in this thread ($200 GC, 12 month discounts on package, free 2015 Sunday Ticket Max, 3 months of premium movie channels, all requiring a 12 month commitment (24 months if you elect to receive new equipment)), but they also may just lay it all out there for you from the start

If all else fails, you can always call the 1-800-531-5000 number back before the date you set and have the cancellation removed and try the whole process again later

I ended up taking it a step further and actually canceled because of my move. New house did not have dish.

Couldn’t come up with a satisfactory deal that didn’t involve 24 month contract so I ended up letting it disconnect and I just had it reconnected at new place yesterday. Word of warning: my grandfathered channel package went away.

I am missing Boomerang and Esquire Channel (No Friday Night Tykes for me!)

What I ended up with:

  • Free installation of dish and wiring
  • Free Sunday ticket MAX
  • 43 off a month for first 12 months (had to sign up for autopay)
  • First month’s bill for free
  • Choice Xtra plus Sports Pack for 77 a month because of 43 dollar savings mentioned above
  • 3 months free HBO/Showtime
  • $200 gift certificate which should be delivered in 6-8 weeks
I ended up with a 12 month contract which is fine because it will run out when the discounts run out.

If you want the whole home Genie, you can get that for free but it requires a 24 month contract

Does anyone know if they still offer Sunday Ticket Max to people that cannot get directtv? We moved, and can't get a signal due to 4 tall trees. The trees are coming down next spring anyway, but I signed up with AT&T for now. I'd love to be able to stream the games from my playstation.

My contract ends on September 1.

Called and got normal customer service. Got $10 off for 12 months, $7 off HBO for 6 months. Said thanks, I'll take it but I still want customer retention.

Get customer retention, tell guy I want to know what promotions are available and that Xfinity is courting me pretty aggressively. Also mention that I want ST Max for free. He tells me he has nothing to offer me and that I should call after September 1 when I will have more leverage.

Hang up and immediately call back, telling customer service that I got cut off from retention. She sends me back to another guy. We talk football for 5 minutes. He tries to get me the ticket for free. Can't do it. Said call back on September 1 and it shouldn't be a problem. Also gives me another $10 off for 12 months. Also has a free hardware upgrade, which I declined cause I'm fine with what I got.

So got $282 in discounts without having to extend my contract. Will keep after the ST Max and hopefully more.

Got my bill yesterday. They charged me for the "free" HBO/Cinemax. I was told it would be refunded when I cancel in three months. DICKS

Happened to me as well.

Also was told that I short paid my June payment, so they charged me that amount on top of the movie package and my monthly price.

I called in and was told that DTV applied the discounts to my June bill by mistake, so when auto-pay went through it pulled the discounted price. When DTV found the mistake, they corrected it on my bill but never drew out any funds - just added it to my July bill. Imagine my surprise when I was looking for my "sweet deal" only to find I was overcharged more than what my old bill was previously!

Back on the phone. SMH
