Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (7 Viewers)

Got my bill yesterday. They charged me for the "free" HBO/Cinemax. I was told it would be refunded when I cancel in three months. DICKS
Happened to me as well.

Also was told that I short paid my June payment, so they charged me that amount on top of the movie package and my monthly price.

I called in and was told that DTV applied the discounts to my June bill by mistake, so when auto-pay went through it pulled the discounted price. When DTV found the mistake, they corrected it on my bill but never drew out any funds - just added it to my July bill. Imagine my surprise when I was looking for my "sweet deal" only to find I was overcharged more than what my old bill was previously!

Got $40 off a month for 12 months and free ST (not Max). Getting $10 off a month for the next 10 months from referring a friend last month. So including that I'll have about $50 off a month for a year

When the season starts call back and tell them you were told it would be Max. Good to great chance they will upgrade it for you.

Spoke with two reps yesterday. Note that I have auto-pay enabled on my DTV account, so my monthly bill is pulled each month. Apparently DTV applied my discounts to my June bill instead of July. This cut my June bill in half, so DTV only pulled the discounted amount for my payment. Someone on DTV side found this mistake, so when the July bill came they applied a "past due amount" that was equal to the discounted amount I received in June. So let's say my monthly bill was $130, they discounted June to $60. On the July bill they applied a "Past Due Amount" of $70 saying I short-paid them on my June payment. I was also charged a monthly fee for "free movie channels" they gave me as part of the deal. In total, my monthly bill shot up $100 in July! After a 30 minute conversation that DTV messed this up and my Auto-Pay only pays DTV the amount DTV says I owe them - they finally agreed that there was an error on their side and credited my account the $100. I stayed on the phone until I saw the credits applied to my account.

I had to go through CS and then Retention before anyone would even consider the credit. DTV kept stating that I should have paid the full amount in June, even though it was their CS team who applied the incorrect discounts, and their Auto-Pay system which pulled the amount for the bill, and then their CS team for going back in and resetting their mistakes on the account after the fact. They tried to sweep this one under the rug, but I'm not about to give them $100 for their lack of quality control.

I've been watching that thread for awhile now. I'm very close to dropping it all and going this route. I've been slowly setting up the house with Cat5 cables as we have remodeled the house. I now have it run throughout the entire house and looking at the equip (HTPC, antennae) and packages to complete the build. Have to take my time due to finances, but if I keep getting crappy service like this from DTV, I may be making the move sooner rather than later.

First Sunday Ticket charges appeared on my account. Called and cancelled that, asked about any discounts or promos and had the extra pack for 3 months. declined. Contract up in 2 months, will try then.

I received the email after the cancellation call. My code is greatdeal1. Does it matter that it wasn't a new deal promo code?

Prior to calling this morning I had 8 months remaining on two $10 off per month credits. Once I got to retention, I was given $30 off for 12 months for agreeing to a 12 month commitment and the redzone channel for free. I didn't ask about Sunday Ticket because I only wanted the redzone channel. Didn't have to threaten to cancel either. Just asked what discounts I was eligible for.

I ditched DirecTV when Fios came out. Fios doesnt defecate the bed when it rains or snows.

Based on my prior experience with them Id say:

You can negotiate with DirecTV as long as you don't have their bend over package. They will throw you a bone (ask for "customer retention") & give you something for free for a year. They will not give you a discount. So if you have everything or close to everything, you are fairly well intercoursed.

This may or may not have changed, but at one time it was accurate.

This is an odd post considering almost everyone in this thread recently picked up fantastic deals from Direct TV. Best deal I have ever received from them and there have been some good ones over the years.

Almost everyone who called got something similar to the following

$46 off per month for 12 months

Free Sunday Ticket Max

$200 gift card

Free movie channels for 3 months

Not really. It just says to call to give them a chance to make it right. And it says best offer ever? Not a whole lot in the email just the phone number which is 1-855-407-3110

called today and was offered

premier for 131 + tax with ST Max free

or

ultimate for 81.62 + tax for 3 months with ST Max free and Premium movies free for 3 months

they wouldn't offer a gift card unless i agreed to a 24 month contract which i did then she told me they would have to send out someone to essentially resend the activation signal to get the gift card (i already have a genie and the newest equipment) so then i turned the whole thing down and told them to continue with my cancellation. I will be trying another call soon

Got my bill yesterday and it has the 1st installment for Sunday Ticket on it even though 2 months ago when I called in to get discounts they told me I would receive about $50 off per month and Sunday Ticket for free (wouldn't give me the gift card). So I called last night and said I had billing problem. 1st rep said she didn't have authority to remove charge for Sunday Ticket and would transfer me to someone who had the authority. Outright lie #1. Have to repeat all the details to rep #2, who says that while looking through notes about my calls back in May he doesn't see anything about free Sunday Ticket. Says he can't offer it to me free but can give me other discounts. Now I'm pissed and tell him I don't want other discounts just want ST for free since that is what was offered to me in May and what I agreed to. I say that if he can't give me ST for free I'll call back when I have more time and tell retention to disconnect me. He says he can transfer me to retention and I refuse because I've already spent 30 mins. on the phone for something that I shouldn't even have to call about. Tell him thanks and hang up on him. Waiting to call back and hoping retention treats me better. DTV customer service is quickly approaching the same level of disdain that I have for Best Buy customer service.

I followed the Script back in May, that was how I got the monthly discounts and free ST. Now they are trying to deny that I am supposed to receive free ST. I shouldn't have to go through the whole process again, but will if retention won't give me the free ST that was promised 2 months ago.

when i originally signed up for DTV i signed up for the free HD for life promotion.... well my CSR screwed it up on my original order and they refused to correct it... we appealed and told them to pull the tapes... they said they did and I was wrong. but for that reason I literally trust nothing the CSR people tell me because they rather easily will back away what they promised you and you the consumer cant really do a whole lot about it.

I'm concerned about ATT merger, that's one option I can "threaten" them with. :)

This is the angle I plan on taking when I request ST this year.

Finally got my issues resolved after 2 more phone calls this afternoon. Best info. I received from the rep who finally gave me free ST and some more discounts was to ask for loyalty/retention when you call (we all knew that already) and ask the agent whether they work FOR DTR or WITH DTV. She said there have been lots of issues with reps from 3rd-party contractors not receiving good training and screwing things up. For example, while she was talking to me an agent I had talked to less than 30 mins. earlier downgraded our programming from premier to choice, which was not something I requested or agreed to. So the agent I was talking to had to reverse that change before she could add ST and the discounts I was eligible for. Also found out that the agent who I talked to back in May when I followed the script never added any notes about the call into my account, so there was no record of what he did. So now I know to also ask the agent to read back to me the notes they are entering into my account before ending the call. Glad this is finally over, hope next year is easier.

Just called to get a replacement remote. Checked again on my contract status. I'm out of contract. This so awesome got all the discounts, gift card and ST and for some reason my contract didn't get extended. This all but grantees free ST and discounts next year as well. ?

IDK what happened since my call with them, but my bill has been $52 a month for the last 3 months :excited:

Maybe I misunderstood my deal, IDK, but awesome!

I had a blow up with DTV last month and just told them to cancel. Was on the line with them for 45+ minutes, spoke to three different people and I lost my mind with the third person. Canceled and went back to comcast.

I called yesterday to cancel and went a little off script:

DTV: "What channels do you watch?"

Me: "I am not watching too much TV now. Most of the time I am just playing Clash of Clans. I am at town hall 9 and pushing to upgrade my dragons to level 4, which is cool because in my clan, anything I donate bumps up a level, so I will actually be donating max drags. Called them last night. Ended up getting a little more than what i was expecting going in. Was really just looking for Sunday Ticket.

Got:

Free Sunday Ticket with Redzone.

Showtime for free for 4 months with automatic cancellation.

$6.50 off my bill for the next year.

I called because I had cancelled Showtime last month and it still showed up on my bill. I was going to cancel HBO too. I asked about Sunday Ticket and he quoted me like $44.99 x 6 payments but then said he'd transfer me to customer retention.

I've been with directv since 94. She even said she doesn't know if she's ever seen anyone that's been with them this long. I bought it for the first year of Sunday Ticket when it was $99.

She game me:

Sunday Ticket free

$30 off a month for twelve months with one year commitment

Half off HD package for 3 months

4 months of Showtime free (without having to call to cancel)

$13 off for 12 months

$5 off for 6 months

:excited: Wow! Saving $553 over 12 months plus Sunday Ticket!

Go Dolphins! :football: :banned: :pickle:

It is an odd post. I think it means he isn't very good at negotiating or dealing with an online rep.

I got Randy, who had just gone through a sucktastic day. I made him laugh. I didn't even have to ask for discounts or whatnot. We chatted about fantasy football for a half hour, and I got free STM and a bunch off my bill.

Randy ate a slug on a thirty dollar bet. Ick. (Not during the call.)

Uh oh. Make the two week out cancellation call earlier this week. No contact at all from directv. Tried calling the 877-250-4624 number and i get a message saying this number is no longer in service. Any suggestions?

I think it was suggested upstream that the number has changed to 1 855 407 3110.

Hope that helps.

Cancel immediately.

I did that at midnight. By 9am the next day I had the email saying they want me back and by 10am I had a new deal in place and was back up and running.

Called today and didn't get anywhere's was kind of mass confusion They were having technical difficulties and didn't have my number on file, i got passed around a few times and was on hold for 20 minutes or so. I've been a customer for 15 years and the best I got was essentially new customer pricing. (15.00 off my bill for a year and free Sunday ticket max). I had called earlier and they offered about the same but in different line items like DVR and HD, local sports fee, discounts. Weird how every time you talk to someone different they find different places to discount. I told the lady I'd think about it and my cancellation date is in a week. I'll try back

Just to update everyone...

I had to go back to lavaloonian due to my barbarian king upgrading.

Called back in and got $15 off with ST max. Once ATT can handle it, I can combine my wireless billing and directv for another $10 per month off. They said to check back about 9/1 for this discount.

I got a letter in the mail about their home security system. It's called LifeShield and has pretty good reviews. Anyone use this system. Was thinking about getting it....

Is the script still working?

Could someone explain all this about actually cancelling, please? I've never done this, and I always get a good deal. Instead of the above "script", I go with "my bill suddenly got much higher and I can't afford it".

Up until last year, Direct TV always gave out good deals by just calling and using any type of story you wanted.

But last year, many people ran into a brick wall, only able to get the bare minimum of concessions.

Earlier this year, one guy on another site figured out that if you got to the point of cancellation (real cancellation, not threatening), that a huge deal would open up for customers to get them back.

He then devised a simple script that he posted.

Once most of us followed that script exactly as laid out, we too were offered much better deals than any of us had ever received in the past, and that is with acknowledging that many of us had received pretty good deals in the past.

I see. Thanks. I wonder how long that will work?

Thinking of getting direct TV for the first time. Tips on how to get the best deal? What kind of deal should i expect? Do i have to do a 2 year contract? Do i have to pay for sunday ticket the second year?

Just signed up for first time ever three months ago. Got 3 months free of HBO/Showtime/Cinemax/1other, Sunday ticket free the first year. $10 off the plan I chose. 2 years

Based off this thread, I will cancel at this time next year and then ask for Sunday ticket for free.

Direct TV is vastly better than the CableOne we had. About $125 cheaper per month. About 10x the DVR storage with more flexibility.

Is the script still working?

Cancel immediately.

I did that at midnight. By 9am the next day I had the email saying they want me back and by 10am I had a new deal in place and was back up and running.
What kind of deal did you get?
