Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (8 Viewers)

Thinking of getting direct TV for the first time. Tips on how to get the best deal? What kind of deal should i expect? Do i have to do a 2 year contract? Do i have to pay for sunday ticket the second year?
Just signed up for first time ever three months ago. Got 3 months free of HBO/Showtime/Cinemax/1other, Sunday ticket free the first year. $10 off the plan I chose. 2 years

Based off this thread, I will cancel at this time next year and then ask for Sunday ticket for free.

Direct TV is vastly better than the CableOne we had. About $125 cheaper per month. About 10x the DVR storage with more flexibility.
Can you cancel the 2nd year when you sign a 2 year contract? My basic question is do i pretty much have to pay for the 2nd year of sunday ticket?

You're not really going to cancel, you're going to threaten to cancel. You can actually cancel but you'd have to pay an early cancellation fee.

You will need the 2 year contract for free equipment. You should have no problem getting ST. The 2nd year you will have to do something like the rest of us did in this thread for ST.

This is not true. I had one year left when I played chicken and cancelled. Once I resigned up, all was forgiven.

Right. I meant if he really cancelled and walked away.

I think this was a mistake in my favor but I wanted to mention it to the group any way.

Like many of you, I followed the script and received all the various items, one of which was the free movie channels for 3 months.

The free movie channels was the least wanted item since I don't watch them but it came for free so what the hell.

I cancelled them early because I did not want to forget and have them come back as a charge, and some how on my next bill, DirecTV actually gave me credit for the channels that I was receiving for free (basically refunding me money I never spent for the unused time).

So if you are not using the movie channels, it might be worth a try to cancel them ahead of time in case you can receive the same mistake.

Have had directv for 10+ years - called yesterday would have been completely fine cancelling if not given a deal I was happy with

Ok'ed getting into a 1 year contract

Got 2 replacement HD-DVR's to replace old equipment of same type (didn't pay for the protection plan either so not part of that). I complained about the duration it takes to switch channels etc which is 100% true and has got worse past couple years. I know all about scrolling effects etc too.

Was able to get

Sunday ticket (may have got max though don't care at all if got Max or not)

$30 off for 12 months

$10 of for 12 months

$5 off for 6 months

Free sports pack (not sure if duration or which pack)

They didn't give ticket right away but did it with little haggling

After a bit they gave me a $120 credit (said was 10 off for 12 months)

Plus another 3 off 12 months

HBO/Cinemax/Showtime for 3 months

I call every year, religiously. Made my call last Friday and was worried about the AT&T switch.

I got Sunday Ticket (No clue if it's MAX or not...don't care) for 50% off

$20 bill credit for 6 months

$10 bill credit for 12 months

Declined 3 months of free Cinemax simply because I wouldn't use it and would forget to cancel it.

Free Genie upgrade and install of new Genie stuff

Installer hooked me up with a ton of extra cables as I'm getting a new TV in a few days.

The last point is one I've used a few times. I slip the install guy $5, and I'm 2-for-2 in getting several new HDMI cables, Coax splitters, other random cabling that comes in handy now and then.

Really pissed I don't have this genie thing. Sick of not being able to watch a show when recording two shows.

Did that new deal in June so I'm probably stuck for awhile huh...

Nothing special, but didn't have a ton of time to play games this year. Just got -$23 credit for 12 months and free Sunday ticket max in 15 minutes first call.

ETA: In other words, yes they're still playing ball

The genie was the main component of either last year (or the year before) deal from DirectTV as they were giving them away for free as part of the incentives to stay.

If they ever have that plan again, jump on it as the genie is a decent receiver.

Yeah. I didn't feel that it was any different than in other years. I don't even mess around any more. Once I get the retention rep on the line, I just tell them that I call every year to get whatever deals they can give me. I used to make up a "switching to XXX" story. Now I don't even bother. Nobody once balks at it, and they'll usually dig around and offer up some decent stuff.

Also - re. the Genie, this was the 1st time I was offered it for free. I think it'll be useful going forward, especially the wireless mini-boxes for other rooms, but if it wasn't free, I wouldn't pay for them.

trying the "email" way to see what happens.. Basically said

"Looking into what our current status is as due to cost and the performance of our receivers we are considering other options".

Receivers are 6+ years old so hoping to get some Money off the bill, RedZone and new receivers..

Will be willing to sign a one contract if it gets me that

I didn't go for the Genie in the past because they wanted 24 months. But my remotes are shot.

I hadn't heard that the menus and search were quicker with Genie. Is that true? New Genie free with no extension?

 no idea if I can get it without an extension longer then 12 months.. and the performance issue I hate is watching anything DVR'd on the other T.V.'s .. Might as well just watch the commercials for as slow as the Jump ahead works on my current receivers.

We love the genie and our mini genie. No more wondering if we are recording too many things at one time. It's nice and speedy, and we can watch stuff on either TV no hassle.

So far so good.. got return email that they want to keep us as a customer with a phone number and personal pin.. tomorrow I'll call and see what they have to offer.

Emailing is a pretty easy thing to do now days grandpa ;)

But.. Instead of calling, saying cancel get a rep, and then get transferred and be on hold, I'm jumping right to the "final step"..

They know why I'm thinking to cancel and so I can just get started with the negotiating. :)

Just set cancellation date for Friday. Waiting...

Do I have any other options for Internet. Comcast screwing me on Internet. $80 damn dollars a month!

I started too soon.. Still had one more month of credits( About $45 worth) so until those expire they couldn't offer to renew them.. She did offer me the "Regular" Sunday Ticket for free without even asking, but I'd have to agree to a 1 year contract.

No biggie, but wasn't going to do that until I could make sure I got the credits again so will try again in a week when my last bill with credits is paid for.

Oh, she did offer to upgrade all 3 of our receivers at no cost, but would have to sign a 2 year contract.. Didn't bother trying to negotiate since I had to wait any ways..

Will try again to get those upgraded for free under a one year contract next week.

Call back, set up a cancellation date and wait for them to call you with the motherload. You're over complicating it here. They can give you offer everyone else got here whether you have credits or not.

Oh I'll get it.. no worries there.. or we will switch..

As I said I didn't even ask about Sunday Ticket or about the receivers.. My email mentioned the receivers and thus the reason she brought them up..

Since I knew our bill would stay the same( currently getting $45 a month in credits) through this Thursday's bill, I figured it wasn't worth haggling right now I was only on the phone for 5 minutes since they had my email.

They have my call on record and know that I have a offer waiting from Dish( $200GC, Red Zone, etc.. No lie needed there, had it sitting in front me), so the call this coming up weekend should go faster. :)

To add on.. Last year it took me 3 calls , each one lasting over 15 minutes each to get all the deals..

So far 5 minutes , and with any luck should get all the deals on the 2nd call this time..

Also, just so everyone knows, this works the same way with SiriusXM..

First call on my renewal she offered $99/year.. Said, no thanks I'll cancel.. Got retention.. First offer was $48 for 6 months..

When I hesitated she came back with 5 months for $25 and waived the processing fees.

Just set cancellation date for Friday. Waiting...

Do I have any other options for Internet. Comcast screwing me on Internet. $80 damn dollars a month!
Geez. Already called me twice today but still at work. What $ amount should I shoot for to get it around for the regular package? Definitely want Sunday Ticket. Is the gift card still being given out?

I called and set cancellation date two weeks out on Friday. I hadn't heard anything from Directv so I called again today and was told it was never submitted. I had them enter in cancelation date this morning. I immediately called a retention number in this thread, 855-407-3110, and a guy was able to give me sunday ticket max, $43 off for 12 months, and free hbo, starz, cinemax, and showtine for 3 months. No gift card, said only comes with new equipment. I'm happy with deal

Someohow my previous discounts never fell off. My bill for the last few months has been $26. A $20 dollar one falls off next month. The dude I talked with to cancel the free movie channels couldn't believe how low my bill was. This thread rocks!!!

PSA: cancel your free movie channels before your next billing cycle begins or you will be charged! For all of them! :(

If you didn't get the gift card just call back the main number and tell them you were told a link would appear on your account at www.directv.com/rebate for the gift card and it has not appeared yet. They'll probably make the link appear for you. That's what I did and ended up getting the gift card after being told it was no longer available.

$68 12 Month Contract. Free Sunday Ticket. Not even 5 minute phone call. BOOM!!!

Did give me the upgrade equipment excuse on gift card, though. Will try back later.

It took three separate calls over the course of a month, but finally found the right rep: Free Sunday ticketmax; HBO/Starz/Showtime three months; Choice Extra package for only $58 a month (Over $50 off my monthly bill). Has to commit to 12 months, but whatever - I'll do it again next year. No gift card.

We have the Ultimate package. We'll be paying about $85 for the next year. (We haven't gotten the next month's bill yet.) That includes the fees, taxes, etc. Plus the free STM.

Cancelled last week, no email, no call, called 877 line

Details:

24 mth contract b/c of equipment upgrades means I might be paying through the nose next year, but I held off the equipment upgrade for many years.

  • 39.99 Ultimate for 12 mths
  • 13.99 sports pack
  • 4.99 HD pack (love me Palladia)
  • Free ST Max
  • Added 5 more receivers for no acquisition (4 genie-related, 1 HD/DVR); brings the system up to 13 total receivers- I pay $6 for each add'l per mth during the season
  • Install fees waived
On top of that:

  • Another $10 off per month for contract
  • $5 off for 3 months
Directv has followed through on none of this.

I have been fully charged at MSRP as if the calls never happened and they are claiming I never called.

BEWARE!

you could be next

I just called to make sure the Pay Channels would be removed since the 3 month free preview was up and I didn't want to get charged. Before I hung up I thought what the hell, why not ask and see if there are any other promotions I can get. Ended up getting a 12 month $10 credit, a 6 month $5 credit, Showtime free for 6 months that will drop off without me doing anything, and HBO half off for 12 months that the credit will cover.

Directv for me = :pickle:

Despite a good amount of documentation that I have, they insist that they do not have a record of the agreement.

They tried to talk me down into paying for NFL ST and they'd resolve the rest today with a credit.

So they are re-negging on these deals folks. And then once you're baited they try to take more money out of your pocket.

If you havent been hit yet, just wait.
