Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (5 Viewers)

Well I royally screwed up...I got the email letting me know ST was renewed and Id be billed $44 or whatever for the next 4 or 5 months or whatever it was, and my bill was due 6/12...so on the 11th, I was hungover, tired, and not in the mood to go through the speil...so I called up JUST to cancel the Ticket so I wouldnt get billed for it. While on the phone, I asked how long I had left on my current discounts. She told me I had 11 months left....then she asked if I needed anything else, and I decided to ask about equip upgrades since my receiver is really laggy...she offered a free Genie, and said my bill would stay the exact same. I took the Genie deal, thinking my bill wouldnt change and I could call later to do the song and dance when I was in the mood to do it. Well, today my bill autopaid, and my bill went from $93 to $130...it seems my discounts of $40/month actually ran out on 5/28, and now Im back to full price. I have no clue what the 11 months she said was about, but again, I was tired and kind of out of it at the time. An iyway Immediately called and cancelled the genie deal asked about any available discounts...was told Im not eligible for any at this time. Alright, DirecTv, guess its time to do this...gonna "shop around" for a day or two, and then call and go through the cancel routine.

Im an idiot. I should have just waited to call when I had the time and energy to go through the usual process.

Should I cancel the ST before they start billing?  Will this help/hurt getting ST again for free when I renew discounts?

Anyone know when their billing for ST starts - the bill we get in August?

I need to renew my account in the next month.

Called today to set up cancellation date of 6/26. I was immediately offered $50 off for 12 months, but nothing on Sunday Ticket. Maybe I'm getting greedy, but continued with cancellation. I'll make another call in a couple days.
Got a call last evening from Directv offering $30 off per month. I told the lady I was offered $50 off earlier in the day. She said she didn't see that offer in the system. Still nothing on Sunday Ticket. She recommended I allow the cancellation to go through and maybe get better discounts then.

Out of interest, has anyone ever accepted a deal and then called back in a few months later to see if there were any new promotions running?  I was wondering if accepting a deal locks you out of any new promotions until your current one runs out.

It seems like there are so many versions of discounts out there.
I answered my own question above just now. :)

When using chat to cancel the automatic renewal of Sunday Ticket, I asked if there were any new credits or discounts I could receive and they found another $15 a month for me for 12 months!

Lesson learned: it can't hurt to ask even if you are already on a contract :)

Received an email today with "The Big Deal" asking me to call to see what they could do to keep me. I settled for $40 off per month and free ST Max for 2016 season. They are also sending a tech out to move my dish to a more desirable location at no cost. I'm happy enough to stay for another year.

My billing date is the 27th of each month and my May bill shows $43 in discounts in mo. 11 of 12.  I also have an additional $10/mo. off in the other discount bucket and a $10 waiver of the advanced receiver fee.  These last two discounts show they are in mo. 8 of 12.  So my main discounts of $43 drop off with the June billing that goes through the July 25th in service.  (Note:  my year long contract ends June 29th)

A total of $63 in discounts and my bill is still $79.80 with tax.  $143 - Are you ####### kidding me?

ETA:  Was told by the initial rep that I had ST for free in 2016.  Not true.  I mentioned disconnect so I could speak to someone in retention and confirmed she didn't have a clue as to what she was talking about.

All I got offered was $30 off and a 20% discount on ST.  I canceled ST and am just going to call to disconnect on July 24th right before my main discounts fall off.

when you set it up, think about if you ever want to have a "roving TV" and look for the best location to set up the hub.  During FB season, I set up multiple TVs in the living room sometimes, and often bring a TV outside or into the garage.  The wireless receiver has about a 75ft radius and works great for these situations.
Wow, really?  Haven't head of that but I definitely need that upgrade.  I have a box on a three season porch that sits unused from Jan through March that I would have use for elsewhere.  Unfortunately my contract isn't up for a while.

I can confirm that cancelling will definitely get you the best deal if you can live without TV for a day or two.  I finally got frustrated after a couple of calls and no free Sunday Ticket so I went ahead and had Fios TV installed.  Called and cancelled DTV after the Fios install.  Started getting calls from DTV that afternoon, didn't pick up the first couple of days because I had no intention of switching back after all the trouble I went through but eventually I realized they weren't going to stop calling so I picked up and the guy offered me the same price I was paying from the deal last year plus free Sunday Ticket.  I said no thanks, that I would have taken that deal a week ago but now its too late I'm not switching back and then he offered to throw in a $200 Visa gift card on top of it if I would switch back.  I said no again and he basically flat out said "what else do I have to do to get you to come back", I said nothing, I already switched over all my TVs and I'm not going through that again and he finally gave up but now I'm thinking I should have seen just how far I could have pushed him just for ####s and giggles.

Yep, really.  What kind of setup do you have right now (i.e. genie or something else).  FWIW, I'm paying $25/month for "advanced receiver service" and another $7/month for each box.

So my $33 off a month expires this month.  Went online chat to talk and said I wanted to make sure my Sunday Ticket was free this season too....they kicked me over to a phone # with a pin and I asked again.....they said they couldn't give me Sunday Ticket for free, but they gave me $40 off a month for a year, without extending my contract at all.

I can't tell on my account yet, but I'd be willing to be that I don't even after sign up for Sunday Ticket if I don't want to and still get the $40 off.

I'm very pleased.  FWIW, I might still call closer to the season to see if they'll give me Sunday Ticket for free.

My entire premise of calling was to verify that I would be getting Sunday Ticket for free again this year.  He said I would be getting charged the $44.99 for Sunday Ticket if I elected to activate it, but he was willing to give me a $40 monthly credit for 12 months ($480 total) without extending my contract, so it's like I'm getting Sunday Ticket for free plus some extra.

I just checked my account and I'm already seeing a $40 credit, since I was paid up in full when I called.  So at this point, I don't even have Sunday Ticket activated and I'm getting $40 off every month....so what I meant was, I don't think the $40 monthly credit was actually tied to Sunday Ticket (i.e. if I don't actually purchase the Sunday Ticket, I'll still get the $40).

When it gets closer to the season, I'll see what I can do to get Sunday ticket for free on top of this.
So I just got my email that I'll be charged for ST on my next bill.  Will be calling on Friday to threaten to cancel and ask for it for free.  Fallback is to commit for a year (which I would do anyway).

I got the ST email as well. Going to see if they'll give me a nice discount for it or find a way to try and haggle just RedZone channel from them. All the Redskins games are local for me anyway, so all I really need is RedZone.

talked Heather just now.....got $30/month loyalty discount and $5/month auto pay discount for a 1 year DTV renewal....she said they don't have a Ticket discount available for me yet but is sure I'll get some kind of deal if I call back late July....she cancelled my Ticket autopay renewal, which she said would avoid any overlapping payments when I get the new Ticket deal in late July....16year customer with DTV and the Ticket with a free ticket last year so I'll post here when I finalize this years offer....

for all our nervousness entering this years calls, it seems like everyone is doing quite well again even with no exact script to follow like last year.  Great to see!

Sorry if I missed it before, but how badly do they want us to bundle w AT&T?  I need another receiver and can't cancel until September.  I was thinking maybe I could get the new equipment, Red Zone and some discounts if I do the bundle. Obviously I don't want to sign up for 2 more years, but for the right price, I might.  I'm already w AT&T, so no big deal there.

called, first rep offered $40 off a month no contract.  $9 off sunday ticket with the max portion free.  plus i'm eligible for a free genie upgrade.  i declined.  i forgot to set a cancellation date, so i called back.  this guy gave me $50 off a month for 12 month with a one year contract and we downgraded my package, saving another $7/mo.  he said to call back once direct tv is on the bill and at the very least, i'll get what the other agent had offered.  so far so good.

My contract runs out 8/8 and called to tell them that my bill was getting too high and I'm considering an offer from Time Warner for TV and Redzone thrown in. I got the same offer of $50 off for 12 months with one year contract. Said that was great and put me back in line with the Time Warner deal but what could he do about the ST/Redzone and he said nothing to offer at this time. Told me to check back in late July/early Aug as there will probably be deals on the ST closer to the season. Thanked him for his help and kindly refused his offer and told him I'd try later on.

Just made my initial call. Not under contract, have Premier programming package with 3 TVs. All of my discounts from last year expired except for 1 $5 off per month, which has 2 months left. My bill for July would be about $187 per month, no charge due for Sunday Ticket yet.

Called the 800 number and said close account. Talked to agent and said I'm thinking about closing my account at end of next billing cycle in mid-July but had a few questions. Confirmed I'm not under contract and that the $37 per month discount I've had for the past 12 months was expired and not renewing even though it says it is 2 year savings. Also confirmed that billing for Sunday Ticket won't start until my August or Sept. cycle. Told him my bill was too high with all of the previous discounts expiring so he checked to see what discounts he could offer. Immediately got various discounts on movie channels and sports package which add up to $27 per month for 6 months, no change in contract status required. Also offered $30 per month for 24 months with a 2 year contract. Passed on that. I asked about discount for ST and he said nothing was showing but that if I wait until it is about to appear on bill I'd be likely to get an offer.

End result, my bill for next cycle will be $160 per month. I'll probably call back in a week and actually set a cancellation date for end of next cycle and see if they offer me anything better.

I have been with DTV for 12 years and I called yesterday to cancel, not as a ploy but to genuinely cancel because of awful customer service and many other issues that I finally got fed up with. They called me back all day and today from a local number until I finally answered, didnt know it was them until I answered. After I told them I no longer want to be with ATT/DTV in an angry upset discussion and that I am bothered they even called me as much as they did after I cancelled, they threw everything at me. I MEAN EVERYTHING, My bill is 28 for the Ultimate for a year (before the fees and taxes, so $55 total roughly) was 120 before. I have every station for a year, including premiums and got the ST Max plus a $200 Visa gift card. By far the best deal I have ever gotten from DTV and needless to say they kept me. Glad I answered the darn annoying calls. The gentleman who helped me was wanting to keep me.

The game here is to prove you are not wanting them anymore no matter what, they will beg you to stay. They just dont make money off of you from your bill, they sell the amount of customers to their advertisers since they cant sell ratings. I heard a rumor that if DTV falls below a certain amount of subscribers. NFL can pull out of its deal.

Not that anyone cares, but just got a message that I'm getting new Genie equipment shipped to me at no charge with two genie minis.
Did not know that, makes the deal that much better. Especially since they wanted me for two years with the new equipment, and I said I'll do it for a year, they bit.
I have a feeling though, I will not have any chance at getting ST Max free next year with how much I get this year. I will change my tune this time next year but it seems fair now.

Called and gave them one last ditch effort to keep me and just transfer services.  $134.29 my bill sky rocketed to from $75.00 - They saw no discounts except a Genie upgrade.

Cancel date 7/1 - We close on our house 8/1 projected.  They told me to call the AT&T number to get a new customer deal (can be in my name again)

Was quoted $70.00 2 year locked in rate (Wife has AT&T cell phone)  Sunday Ticket Max, $200 Visa Gift Card,  $10.00 off the cell bill a month, Unlimited data.  Will sign up closer to the move.

Just cancelled Ticket .  Offered 10% discount.  Uh no
got the same offer.. even went to retentions in the beginning, played a little that I still like it just can't afford it but didn't try too hard

Did not take the$50 off for 12 months when I called last week because no ST max included.  Will just bite the  bullet for a month and then call back in July and either I get ST max with the $50 for $12 or cancel time.

My two year contract was up in July, just moved, and was going to pay $20 early termination fee and go cord cutting mode. I already had an Apple TV with Netflix and Hulu, figured I would need a local/basic network antenna and maybe Sling (and also Amazon Fire/stick sideloaded with KODI)?

I had been paying about $100 mo. for a Genie in the living room and three smaller boxes in bedrooms (got free ST and $200 gift cert. in '14 when I rejoined after leaving for a sweetheart deal from Time Warner on a two year contract, nothing in '15, could have no doubt gotten free ST in '16 if I re-upped for another two years). The rep offered $40 off for a year (with no time commitment extension beyond the existing July '16 time frame, I think month to month after that?). I voluntarily requested to go from a mid-tier programming package to their most basic (Choice, Select?) and still got most of what I already watched, hi def CBS/NBC/ABC/FOX, TCM, BBC America, usual channels like TBS, TNT, USA, NAT GEO, music channels, after it dropped out for a day, was surprised to get NFL Network, only seem to have dropped ESPN which I rarely watch anyway. Also in the move, kept some equipment, but downsized to Genie in living room and a box for just ONE additional room (lopping two off the bill, extra equipment really jacks up the monthly bill). I still pay for "whole house" DVR and equipment insurance, as it has gone on the fritz once or twice over the years. Most recent and first new mid-month bill was $37, I will need to renegotiate the extra $40 month off in a year (or cut the cord a year delayed). The work order confirm e-mail for the move install did mention (contrary to what I was told by the FIRST rep) that ANY move install entailed a re-up for another 12 months, and new equipment, which I didn't get, for 24 months. I tried to clarify this, but as far as I can tell, no time commitment change, and even if it is a year, at this price, I'm fine either way. The install was free, and required a new dish as there wasn't one already (though there was pre-existing wiring).

Was paying $60 mo for Time Warner cable modem hi speed internet and intended to cancel and consolidate with ATT (now owns DirecTV) fiber optic, but that was a nightmare, got a wrong price quote, nobody would correct, was on hold for close to an hour before hanging up, so called back just to cancel. Earlier, when I bought a TV from Dell on Black Friday, got a 10% gift certificate and used it to buy a Time Warner approved combo modem/wireless router (two choices, the less expensive was about $110 but rep gave me about 25% off to get it to approx. $85 - same as Amazon). I thought I was paying $5 mo but it was actually $10 mo for the equipment rental, so when they did the internet move install ($20 which I tried to remove in advance with no luck), the tech hooked up my new combo and took theirs. Something was off on the new bill which was now $70, but rep found a new 12 mo promo to apply to approximate the old terms (need to request again on or before 6-3-17), and with the deducted $10 equipment rental, new bill lowered to $45 mo. Also month to month, no time commitment I think?

* As noted, could have requested free Sunday Ticket, but not a good fit for several reasons. I wouldn't have wanted to re-up for two years, plus in order to even be eligible for such a service bump/upgrade I would have needed to jump back up one or two programming tiers to where I already was before, going in the wrong direction to LOWER my bill (which prompted me to want to cut the cord in the first place :) ). Also, now that Rams have returned to LA, I can catch them on local network TV.

sorry, wuht?

Went from $100 to $37 mo by A) getting $40 mo reduction (after mentioning I was cancelling but offered before it even got to CR - customer retention), B) dropping 1-2 programming tiers to most basic level (and still retaining most of what I already watched besides ESPN, INCLUDING NFL Network) and C) keeping a Genie and just one box (but dropping two additional boxes in the move).

* You don't need to quote everything just to say wuht? Wuht will suffice. :)

My contract ended in May. I called and was told the best she could do was $5/mo off. She said to call at then end of June and they might have more for me. So I paid a full month and now will be calling this week.

Not really happy about this. My call this week will include a cancel if necessary.

thanks yeah said i couldnt get out of the $99 fee but would give me $50 instant credit.  Interested on how the wireless receiver works
So far I like the upgrades.  Our internet is hit and miss.  With the new setup, it is not streaming Pandora, etc.   I have other ways to make that happen through the stereo but not happy about the connection issue (which was tolerable before).  I need to contact Comcast to deal with this.

ok was wondering.  I have blast with comcast and supposed to 50 but its normally in the 10 range.  Seems like I occasionally have problems when watching hbogo and other things.  Think I just need a new router that is a little better.

I have been looking for someone to take my "DTV's Gimp" status Mitch.

You could be it.  :drumsfingersonmitch'shead:

:)  No worries Mitch.  Go through with the cancellation and your ##### status will disappear.

They were absolutely horrible to me prior to actually being cancelled while others here were getting everything by just threatening to go.

I finally got everything they were giving ...but it was after I called back the morning after the actual cancellation.

Since I set my cancel date I have gotten a call everyday for 3 days. Still not getting a good offer.

I've been plying the Mr nice guy but it's time to switch it up. Going in as pissed off customer next call.

I am going to bend DTV over and pound them into oblivion in the next week or so. My bill jumped form $78 to $93 to $130 in the last 2 months. If I have to, Ill completely cancel and wait for them to call. Ive done this song and dance for years and just havent been feeling it yet this year, but the time is almost here. I want the ST Max, $200 gift card, and silly discounts, and I wont stop until I get it. All of it. :chestpound:

Agreed.  I've been with them for almost 20 years now I think.  Can get cable as a bundle for a year for $20 a month I think.  Wanted to switch because I really don't care but Mrs. SLB objected.

FYI, if you had free ST last year and cancel online, they will offer you a discount to stay.  Decline that and they will offer you another discount.  In case you want it but don't feel like haggling.

Also, if I cancel, they just turn the service off correct?  I don't have to wait for a tech to come out or anything?

Regarding canceling, just have to return your stuff (not the satellite, but Genie and any mini boxes, remotes), read off the serial numbers and they send out a box/boxes you can just drop off at a shipping place without paying.

So what did you say online for cancelling Sunday Ticket? I'm about to try that now and see what happens

The online chat to cancel Sunday Ticket doesn't seem to be working. No one can do it for me online. Though, I was able to get another $10 off for the next 12 months. So I'm now up to $60 off my bill for the next year!

Where do I check to see when my contract is up?  Checked everywhere
Not sure its anywhere on the bill (don't feel like looking ....)  :D

As painful as it was, I called - BUT don't trust a ####### thing I am told by the first set of morons.  It seems like the retention people are the only ones that aren't temps.

It turns out my year was up a couple of days ago but still have a month of discount left of my big discount amount and a couple more after that for another $20 in discounts.

Don't care.  I am going to line up my disconnect the last day of my larger discount - they disconnect at midnight and I called to new connect with the deals the next morning when I got up.

So what did you say online for cancelling Sunday Ticket? I'm about to try that now and see what happens
I canceled online and then there was a pop up asking me to reconsider for 10% off.  I declined that and there was another popup offering 20% off.  After declining that it canceled.

Decided to log in and check my discounts to see when they expire and see this:

 Current Balance
    - $58    (You have a credit on your account)

Interesting as I haven't made any changes or calls...  :oldunsure:

When looking at your last statement you can see when your deal will expire:

$31 off $74.99 for 12 months (9 of 12)
$10 off $74.99 for 12 months with Auto Bill Pay (9 of 12)
Other Discounts
4.     Save $10 for 12 months (9 of 12)
5.     Save $5 for 24 months (21 of 24)

Looks like come Football season I got some calls to make

ETA.. Looks like they already added Sunday ticket for free to my account, without any phone calls..
