Candidate: Autism and bad weather caused by God's anger. (1 Viewer)

Republican leaders called Thursday for Susanne Atanus to drop out of the GOP primary for the 9th Congressional District after she told the Daily Herald this winter's bitter weather is a sign that God is angry over abortions and same-sex marriage.

During an interview with the Daily Herald editorial board this week, Atanus said she believes God is angry because of same-sex marriage, abortions, civil unions and gay rights, resulting in severe weather and autism, among other things.

Her comments went viral on Thursday, resulting in a backlash online and among state party leaders.

On Thursday, Atanus said she will not drop out of the primary against David Earl Williams III, and as of late in the afternoon she said she still had not heard from the GOP leaders.

"I'm not withdrawing from the race. I don't know why they are not standing behind me," Atanus said. "They should talk to me personally. I will not back out of the race."

Jack Dorgan, chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, said in a statement on Thursday, "The offensive statements by Susanne Atanus have no place in the modern political debate, and she has no place on the ballot as a Republican."

"Her candidacy is neither supported nor endorsed by the leaders of our party, and she should withdraw from the race immediately."

Adam Robinson, chairman of the Chicago Republican Party, distanced himself from Atanus in the same statement.

"Atanus is not in any way affiliated with any of our efforts in the Chicago GOP, nor have we ever supported, endorsed, or assisted her in any way at any time," Robinson wrote.

Cook County GOP Chairman Aaron Del Mar has not made a statement on the issue and was unable to be reached Thursday because he was out of the country.

Atanus, who lives in Niles, continued to stand by her comments.

"I am a Christian. I care a lot about the world and I care a lot about my obedience to serve God the right way," she said. "I can't turn my eye and look the other way when I know that abortions, gay rights and civil unions are making God very angry."

The 9th congressional seat is held by Democrat Jan Schakowsky. The March 18 primary will determine if Schakowsky faces either Williams or Atanus in the fall.

It's good to see some Republicans vocally distance themselves from the crazy idiots. Hopefully this trend continues to sweep across the country until this brand of morons are a thing of the past.

Not sure why this is so weird. If you believe in the whole God thing, it actually seems pretty reasonable to think that he would be pissed off about some of the recent goings on and that he would send punishment in the way of storms or plague.

No, that's not the slightest bit "reasonable." Reasonable would be God sitting down with 60 Minutes and explaining what is bothering him.

Yeah, it's perfectly reasonable to think that God is more pissed over gay rights than he was about the holocaust.

It's pretty reasonable to think God unleashed Autism on the world because Adam and Steve got hitched?

I'd say let her run and let her be repudiated, but if she starts doing well, then that's a situation they probably don't want to risk...

Think about it, though. People like this believe that at one point in actual history, god got so pissed off at what people were up to that he flooded the entire planet and straight up murdered everyone. Why on earth wouldn't these people believe that god would send a few storms and illnesses to punish modern people that are up to [what they consider to be] no good?

To them, this is completely logical and reasonable.

If anyone ever wanted a concrete example of how the megachurch culture is dangerous for individuals who eventually have to work with people outside their culture, this is about as good as you can get. Granted I am assuming this woman is an evangelical and that her social circles are predominantly evangelical, but I feel like that is a safe bet.

Yes. Homosexuality is a sin. God has sent much worse punishments for much less

To punish homosexuals he makes the children of heterosexuals autistic, makes sense.

Makes perfect sense.

As a believer, she ought to be ashamed of the arrogance in thinking she knows the mind of God.
But that's the definition of religion. Claiming to know the mind of god. If it was just "hey, god exists, go about your day", people wouldn't go to church. Completely separate from faith, religion is all about people telling other people what god wants them to do.

If I had to choose banging that creature or batting for the other team id be bending over with a smile

+1 for camp that isn't sure that is a woman.

The bible is a great window into a person's soul. If they read it and come out of that with anger, vengeance, and keying on gays, well, you have a highly homophobic, insecure, and angry person.

I say the more crazy the better. Eventually we'll get to a time where the agnostic and atheist candidates can come out of the closet and not have to worry about losing an election if they don't pretend to believe. We're still a generation or two away but eventually things will flip-flop and the majority of political candidates will be non-believers. I bet we'll get to the point where believers have to pretend they don't believe if they want to win an election.

Does no one else find it interesting that she is so insulated from outward culture that she is actually surprised the GOP is not supporting her views?

The only reason I harp on that is I used to work with and for some pretty hardcore evangelicals. Church three days a week types who seek to spread God's word through everything they do, business or otherwise. And very accomplished and savvy folks at that.

The one guy who wore it more on his sleeve than anyone else, who was my direct manager for a time, often talked about how bad the megachurch phenomenon was for the Christian community. Precisely because of the disconnection from the rest of the non-evangelical world that megachurches allow and encourage.

How do we know it's the gay God is angry about? Not the millions of kids that die of malnutrition every year, nope , it's those damn gays.

Seriously...those two guys are happy I must punish some innocent children!!!! That's a great GOd you have there

To reference another thread, God is actually being a good father here. Destroy the wicked, corrupt culture and kill, er, I mean, bring the children home to heaven, so they won't be exposed to gays trying to recruit more innocent children to their cult.

According to the bible, only male-on-male homosexual acts are a sin. Female homosexuality is never specified as being sinful.

It doesn't matter who is fornicating with whom. God doesn't approve of homosexuals and according to His word, they deserve to be punished. And since our society is "aiding and abetting" the homosexuals, our society should be punished. It's not surprising that he is bringing his wrath in many different ways.

What is surprising is how ineffective he is. For an omnipotent being who wants to punish someone, he sure is doing a shoddy job of it. The gays have been gaying it up all over the country for at least, oh, 20 years now. At least, I think. Probably about that. For all their gayness, god hasn't been able to even slow them down. Not exactly a check in the Win column for god.

Why are you assuming that all homosexual behavior is "fornicating"? Do you not know what homosexuality is?
