Car Rental Companies. Your fave and most hated. (1 Viewer)

I always liked Enterprise - no hassle, pick of decent sized car/SUVs and good rates. And just walking straight out to pick your car.  Awesome.

Always used them for work - so it's been several years, don't know if it's the same or not.

Hertz is fun because they give you god tier lambo status if you can manage to link your corporate rate with them.

My company doesn't care if I use for personal as long as I pay.

Not sure how easy that is for individuals

Enterprise best

Thrifty by far the worst. Wouldn’t let me exchange a car that ran like crap because there was a nest in the carburetor. Never even got an apology of any sort

I usually use Avis just because I used to travel a lot and that's who my company used, so I have some ridiculous status.  I also use Turo sometimes, particularly if I want a nicer car.

Earlier this week I was in LA and rented through Alaska Airlines.  Ended up getting a car from "EZ Car Rental" who rented me a "Toyota Camry or similar" for $13/day.   Good process, didn't take long to get a car, and they upgraded me for free to a crossover SUV.

National and Enterprise are linked, yeah?  I assume so because National does the same... no hassle, go right from plane to lot and pick your car and drive off.  You have to be a member of their "club" or whatever but no big deal.  Definitely my favorite.

Absolutely stole a car from Hertz last summer in Honolulu. 10 days through the AAA website, got quoted about $1300. Decided to dig a little deeper. That was for the HNL airport rental location and return. Found the same car at a "Hertz Local Edition" 10 miles inland, for the same dates, and using my AAA code I booked it for $220. They offered free pickup so I had them pick me up at my hotel (which had a Hertz in the lobby, and totally confused the guy why he was picking me up from one Hertz to drive me to another, but the hotel's Hertz wanted $1100 for the car).  I upgraded to a much larger car for $15 more and then added the $10 fee to drop if off at a different Hertz for return at the end of the rental... and returned it to the HNL airport location, saving me a cab ride to the airport at the end of the trip. It only cost $24 to get me and my girl from the airport to the hotel on the first day, so, all told, I ended up saving myself over a grand. Comically put like 2000 miles on the car driving it all over the island. Had a blast.
You drove 2000 miles in 10 days on Oahu? It’s only like 50 miles from one side of the island to the other - where did you drive?

Everywhere. Big loops around the whole island, cuts through the middle, we had events planned all over the island every day, plus a few extra days at the end to go do whatever again a second time. Felt like going back to the same roadside shack for lunch on the North Shore one day, so drove all the way around just for that. Then back to Waikiki for some other thing. Then breakfast the next morning at Leonards just for malasadas. Unlimited miles so I just felt like getting out and hitting the road for fun. Vacation!
 nice!

Speaking of unlimited miles, a buddy of mine and I drove cross-country in an Avis car (well, cars... more on this in a sec).  We rented it in LA and told them we needed it for 6 weeks to drive around California and the Southwest.  In reality we were taking it as far as Boston.

By the time we got to Dallas (or just outside it... Corsicana to be exact), the car was toast.  The starter went out.  Got the engine jimmied up and drove to Dallas and they brought out another car.  That one lasted to Memphis, as it was making a ton of engine noise.  Got yet another car there and drove that one to Atlanta, up the coast to Boston and back to LA.

On the road for 6 weeks.  It was awesome.

I live on Oahu and barely drive that much in several months, but I ain’t touring the island. My wife complains about driving 20 minutes in traffic here, and locals sometimes spend almost their entire lives a few miles from home - driving 10-15 miles over the mountains is considered a “long” trip.

Seriously? We used to drive all over the island.

Too many awesome places to sit in a 20 minute radius.  We lived on Kailua Beach and Sandy Beach couple years each.

eta - 2000 miles in 10 days there seems a stretch

I live 2 miles from Sandys, and my first home was in Kailua. I drive to Mokuleia to climb once a week or so; that’s literally the other side of the island, but still less than 50 miles away.

Living and hiking/biking/climbing/canyoneering here 15+ years, I’ve seen more of the island than probably 90% of the locals.

Sixt tried to charge me for damage they did to the car.  They showed me pictures of the damage, but we walked the car upon return and none of that was there.   They ended up not charging me.   The car was Lexus, very nice car though.

What are the advantages of Turo?
The app is super easy to do everything - booking, payment, insurance

Flexibility of dates

Cool cars (if that’s your thing) or just get a normal sedan - overall spend can be way less than traditional rental car companies

Get the car delivered to the airport

1 & 3b are why I started using it years ago - two vendors in the same month mentioned using it to save money when they flew to NYC. Besides business travel, I’ve used it for weekend getaways to rent Tesla electric vehicles. There’s a lot of exotics in there, but the bulk of the owners are just regular people renting out their normal car.

This does seem pretty cheap.

I've been a Hertz Gold member for about 15 years.   Always liked how easy it was to see my name on the scoreboard and get my car.  Would even get emails with car location

Last August,  we flew into Spokane to go to Coeur dAlene for a 3 day weekend with 4 adults and 2 kids.

Rented a mini van.  10 minutes to CDL and we cant get ac to work.  We try everything.  It was like 88 the entire weekend.

So I return the car Monday am and manager comps me one of the three days.  This was fair.  I was cool with that.

Two weeks later I get a letter stating that we scratched three different areas of the right, rear panel. Problem is I didnt do that.  And unlike all my visits to Hertz at lax and tulsa each year, no one was there at Spokane to walk around the car when we dropped it off.

I fought it for about two months.  My insurance guy told me to keep fighting and ask for next guy up the food chain.  Pain in the ### lady that kept hounding me finally accepted my offer to write a letter and explain how it could not be me and how they ####ed up by waiting two weeks to tell me. They wanted $1800.  It finally got dropped.

Yesterday I ran over a bolt in our rental and Hertz would not cover buying a new tire because I didnt buy their ripoff insurance.

This is not surprising at all.

Even with the loss damage waiver, it may not even get covered.  I can't remember the car company I rented with but a similar thing happened to me and I had bought their loss damage waiver.  When I returned it, they charged me for a new tire since it hadn't exceeded the deductible.

Gotta read the fine print on the loss damage waivers, they say it covers anything done to the car but there are limits.

Fave: Hertz. Always lots of cars available, great customer service.

Worst: Dollar. They have maybe 7 cars on site, two of which smell like an ashtray, one with a dead hooker in the trunk.

Second Worst: Avis. Allowed a woman with a fake ID in my wife’s name to rent a yellow mustang convertible and never return it.

i borrowed a truck to move a couch from a fellow brohan named phil and he was pretty cool about it when i tried to even up and would not take any cash so i left a five pack on his passengers seat when i dropped er off so hey phil it is for me take that to the bank brochachos

As long as I don't have to stop at a counter I'm happy.

National is my favorite.  I like to be able to pick onsite which one I want.   Hertz Gold does fine too.  I always rent with my United Mileage Visa.  I think I get double points for it, and they have extra insurance.

Yep.

Almost expect hookers and blow in the car each week.

National. I’m a super duper member, so I’m sure my experience isn’t normal, but I always get to pick my car, and I’m always driving a Brand new Cherokee with leather, a convertible mustang, a decked out Maxima, or something similar. It’s always like that. I love it.

Anyone familiar with Sixt? I just started noticing them recently and their rates are really good.
I rented from them in San Diego and drove to San Francisco.  Other than their San Francisco location being off airport and not knowing that in advance it was a great experience.  Great car for a cheap price.  They tend to have mostly European cars.

There's a Mercedes-Benz SUV for a $100 cheaper than the majors' standard SUVs. It's suspicious.
