Car Troubles, Part 3 (1 Viewer)

2005 expedition has been running terribly. It runs fine for the first 15-20 minutes, but then starts to feel like its going to kill and eventually the check engine light comes on. I have not hooked it up to get the engine light codes.

Another issue I have seen twice in the past week is when the turn signal is used, all of the lights blink...the stereo, the dash lights, the various buttons...all at the same time...although very quickly, not in the same rythem as the turn signal. Seems like some sort of wire short?

Not sure if the two issues are related in any way.

Do you have a coolant issue, as in not enough? Or water pump or thermostat issue. Would make sense that it runs fine at first but then starts to overheat. Any temp gauges on that model, or just a light?

Does the blinker only blink the lights if turning in one direction? My blinker will blink quickly if one of the bulbs is out, but I've never heard of it blinking all the lights.

ETA: I would possibly change the thermostat first. Cheap and easy thing to try.

I'll have to check into the coolant, but I had the issue before and after an oil change, which I assume they check the fluid levels. The temp gauge does not move much past the midpoint.

The blinker issue is not because of the bulb being out. :lmao:

Need the check engine codes....probably a sensor of some type....possibly o2 or air temp or something stupid. Probably throwing multiple codes so start with the cheapest first. Come back to us when you have the codes read.

Agree. Check the codes. It'll save you a lot of trouble. The wife's old Escape had a similar issue. It would lose power, almost make a "buzzing" sound. It was occasional, and would throw a CEL. A code reader revealed it was a bad #4 ignition coil. Quick and easy fix. Without the code reader, I'd have spent all day changing 6 coils, even if I'd have figured out that was the problem.

Re. the blinkers - Does sound like some sort of a short...Logically, when the blinker is activated, it's drawing more power than it should, and thus causing the rest of the lights to dim. Kind of like how a hard-hitting stereo system would over-draw the alternator and cause lights to dim on bass notes. I agree with WhatDoIKnow - is it both blinkers or just one? I'd guess just one...if that's the case, I'd trace that wire and check the relay. Heck, it might even be easier to just run a new wire from the relay to the light if you can do that. Digging in factory harnesses can suck.

Got the codes checked. I changed the camshaft sensor last night. Now I wait and hope I guess. The second code was for a new timing kit...which I clearly do not want to deal with.
