I will provide real advice for you Em... If my notebook is correct, you are near Detroit and have an Associates? If this is the case, go get your Bachelors in Marketing, it shouldn't take more than 2 years... At this point, it will be very easy to get a low paying ($30-$40k a year) job at an ad agency in Detroit. Hemp stock is at .06 right now. Great time to buy. It's at a low with a .34 ceiling. When the states legalize hemp! this stock could hit .50 for a week. $$$$$$$$$$$$

 
Serious question: Do you have a degree? If you don't have a degree and do not like your job, just quit and get a new retail job.
He does not have a degree.
In all fairness, in only a year and a half, assuming he can pay tuition, he will have an associate degree.
That was 6 months ago. I think he only has a year left.

Is it April yet? Remember how well things were going to be going for him come April? All his bills paid off and money to burn on the stock market.

O.K. My advice to you is to get a four year degree because you are wasting your time right now. Your two year Associates degree, unless it is in a very specific lucrative profession, is probably going to be worthless. I used to work in departmental retail management many years ago and even back then, I had a bachelors degree. Almost all big box/giant corporate retail operations demand that store directors (i.e. the only people on the front lines who are making good enough coin to justify working in the crappy world of retail) have college degrees of some kind.

Sure, you might be able to snag a 30K per assistant manager job at some point without a degree, but you will never move any further. Don't even think about moving into the 6 figure corporate world unless you have that degree and probably another professional credential of degree on top of that. My dad recently retired at a very large retail company as VP of operations and he basically said that at the higher levels of management, they are looking for 'well - heeled' MBAs and other advanced degrees, meaning not only degrees, but degrees from prestigious universities.

The job you have now probably seems like a lot of responsibility, but to be honest with you, what you do is nothing special. Do not convince yourself otherwise. You have the job you do because you are reliable and you are probably not dumb, at least at this point in your life. Make no mistake about it though, you are basically the king of the ants.

Oh...and here is a clue for you that you might want to consider. Retail sucks. When you factor in quality of life, working conditions, pay, and perks, It is probably the second worst place to work behind working in a restaurant. Ten years from now, even if you have that college degree and you are banking 80 - 100K as a store director somewhere, there is no guarantee that you will not hate your life.

My career advice to you is to make a plan for what you really want to do, get a four year degree from a reputable university, and move on from there. Also, as much as you might dislike your co-workers, always treat them with kindness and respect. I would not be surprised if a good deal of those 40 year olds you are leading didn't once have 'management' positions when they were in their younger and less jaded versions. That way you build up your own character and this time you are spending at Walgreens will not be a total waste.

 
My advice. Cash out everything you have and play the lottery. All you need to do is win ONCE and then invest properly and you're set for life!! How hard can it be?

2) You've given solid advice here. And because of that, you can be sure it will be ignored and you may even get told to be quiet because you don't know him well enough to offer advice.

:lol: :lol: :lol: Easily making 150K?!?! Sure...if he somehow gets into one of those companies and becomes a top performer. I am not sure that it is that easy to get there though unless you have some connections.

I am sure he comes to work and stocks the shelves the way the manager likes...when I was managing kids his age (10 years ago), there were probably 3 out of every 10 who fit that bill. Also, just to clarify, when I say 'not dumb', I am not saying smart, I am just saying that he is probably not a blazing, flipping idiot and is able to follow basic directions without complaint. Whether or not people think he is being serious or not, what he is describing is true. Retail is littered with many people who are in their 30s - 50s who never had any direction, never got a degree, are borderline losers of life making 8 - 10 dollars an hour with no insurance, no safety net, despite having many, many years of experience in the field. Working and trying to manage that pissed off demographic is a big reason why working in retail sucks and also why I would advise hightailing it out of there ASAP.

I'm not saying you're wrong. In fact, I totally agree with you. I think it's very good advice. But knowing how Em treats the advice he's given, I'm going to assume your advice will not be listened to.

I misspoke, not easy, you are correct... However with proper drive, skills, and accomplishments it is highly doable.

I do plan on returning to an actual University in the fall of 2015 to acquire a Bachelors in Business Administration.

I guess my backburner plan is to continue to get promoted in Walgreens as I continue to get educated. Once I get my Bachelors, I'll probe about my chances of becoming a legitimate Store Manager. It's a really easy position and the average salary is about $75,000 a year.

I do plan on returning to an actual University in the fall of 2015 to acquire a Bachelors in Business Administration.

I guess my backburner plan is to continue to get promoted in Walgreens as I continue to get educated. Once I get my Bachelors, I'll probe about my chances of becoming a legitimate Store Manager. It's a really easy position and the average salary is about $75,000 a year.
