Was offered a deal with Pena in it - was going to pass until I saw his numbers - had no idea he was having such a great year - whats the readout on him? Real deal or back to earth soon?
Nobody actually knows. I'm sure he'll be league-average at worst, but I'd be hesitant to pay for stats that are already in the bank. I really doubt he keeps up a top-5 OPS, but nobody expected this either.
Nice to see Pena finally hit the ball before the month of August. As a Tiger, his bat would be dead untill the Tigers statistically had no chance of finishing .500 and then he would come alive.
Well he and Bonderman were acquired in the same deal from Oakland so we all (Tiger fans) thought we had something special. He has a sweet, smooth swing and tremendous power but he always looked overmatched against anyone with above average stuff. In 2004 he hit 27 home runs but fell flat on his face in 2005 and although he had good power, he wasn't really worth the Tigers keeping around because he didn’t seem to have the ability to take that next step.
Then he went to Boston, they thought the same thing and now he's in Tampa. Someone asked this same question earlier this year and I said he was a mystery to me but the ability is there. Now I'd say knowing his swing and power that maybe he's starting to figure things out. He doesn't hit lefthanders well even now but he also seems to be able to hit anyone throwing from the right side which was not the case when he was in Detroit.
I really hope he does well because he's a really nice guy who has nothing but good things to say about his time in Detroit. I think he's an interesting player to watch because I'm not sure anyone knows exactly what he is doing right now and whether this is just an aberration. My best guess is that he'll always have great power and a great swing and will probably hit 30 HRs or more this year but his other stats (OPS, SLG, AVG, BB/K ratio) will get worse. I think I'd take the chance on him in a dynasty but would probably be careful in a redraft unless you are trading for him by giving stuff you have too much of. But to tell you the truth this is a very strange player to watch. He could be an above average 1B with power or just a guy that can hit a HR off an average RH pitcher. I hope he ends up being really good but I wouldn't bet on it.
Not that this has anything to do with fantasy, but this is definitely true. Guy is like Ned Flanders with power.More I think about it, I think he'll continue to pound righties, but may end up in a semi-platoon with Wigginton, which will save his fantasy owners from tanking the BA against lefties at least.
