Carson Palmer injury? (1 Viewer)

A reader tipped us off on Tuesday to the possibility that Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer emerged from Monday night's loss to the Colts with an injury. Per the tipster, Palmer has a shoulder injury, possibly a torn rotator cuff.

We've poked around a bit via our network of sources, and we've concluded that there's something to this one. It might not be a torn rotator cuff, but it's something.

And it's the last thing the 8-6 Bengals need as they prepare to face the 8-6 Broncos on Sunday in Denver. The winner will be in great shape for a playoff spot; the loser will be battling with the likes of the Jaguars and the Steelers and the Jets and the Chiefs and the Bills (the Bills?) for the six seed.

Interesting. I suspect that if Carson Palmer had a torn rotator cuff, we would have heard about it by now from multiple sources. Not disparaging PFT, but the game was two days ago. The chances that a severe arm injury to a top-5 NFL quarterback and franchise player could be kept under wraps for 36 hours strikes me as highly unlikely.

Agreed. It's quite possible he suffered a shoulder injury of some kind but if it were this major I can't see how the Bengals would keep it under wraps.

During the game I remember Palmer getting hit on the arm and the ball coming loose (it was an incomplete pass, reviewed at the request of Dungy). It seemed like Palmer was trying to work some soreness out of his arm and the crack ESPN announcing team said that Wright was warming up on the sidelines, but he never came in. If there was an injury, this is probably when it happened.

:lmao: I remember this happening, too.

wow this would be huge if it is a tear.........Broncos would get a huge X-mas present if Palmer is out this weekend.

i agree that major news like this should have been reported by now, but if there was swelling there and they couldn't see it until that swelling went down, then Wednesday morning would be about right for the report.

There's no mention of Palmer missing practice today at Bengals.com. And I don't think Palmer would be able to comfortably get his arm over his head to throw passes with a torn rotator cuff, although his lack of accuracy in the second half is somewhat of a red flag.

Still, PFT has had scoops out of Bengaland before (CJ snapping at coaches, Odell suspension) so this bears watching.

Getting uncomfortable flashbacks of Greg Cook here. :lmao:

Still fussy about single blocking Dwight Freeney with a rookie OT, BTW. That's past arrogant. Especially after Freeney showed he could get upfield early in the first quarter.

:loco: Swelling in shoulder is different than swelling in the knee. The swelling needs to be controled in the knee before a proper diagnosis can be made. If he injured his shoulder back when he was shaken up before, I don't think he would have been able to go the rest of the game with a rotator cuff tear that would cause him to sit out the rest of the season.

rut roh. From Rotoworld:

Carson Palmer (shoulder) and Chad Johnson (undisclosed) each missed practice on Wednesday but are probable to play in Week 16.

The franchise quarterback had a brief scare in the fourth quarter on Monday when his arm was impeded as it pushed outward to release a pass. Palmer remained in the game, although Johnson missed a chunk of time after requiring intravenous fluids for cramps. Don't read too much into the missed practice unless it extends through Friday and a downgrade follows.

Notes: Palmer probable for Denver

Palmer

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer didn’t practice Wednesday with a shoulder injury, but he’s listed as probable for the Christmas Eve game in Denver and is expected to have a full practice Thursday.

Palmer had his throwing shoulder checked after he got sacked on the last play of the first half Monday night in Indianapolis and he appeared to take another shot there in the second half when end Robert Mathis hit him just as he was throwing the ball.

Jack Brennan, the club's director of public relations, said there is no structural damage. Trainers and coaches felt Palmer came out of the game sore, Brennan said, and that it was best to hold him out of practice for the day.

Thanks for the update. Hobson mentioned only CJ and Willie Anderson earlier in the day. Somebody must have gotten wind of the PFT story or was waiting for official confirmation of test results.

If anyone remembers, right before halftime, Palmer went to throw the ball and someone came from behind and hit his arm down while he was trying to throw it. The ESPN announcing team stated palmer was not moving his arm and you could tell he was favoring it while they were going to their locker room. Those two hits on his arm could of done some real damage.

If he injured his shoulder back when he was shaken up before, I don't think he would have been able to go the rest of the game with a rotator cuff tear that would cause him to sit out the rest of the season.
Pennington played ou the season with what turned out to be a torn rotator cuff..... As I remember the Dr's said it couldn't get injured more so, he played.... I'd suspect the injury is different every time and for every player. From Wikipedia:Pennington answered speculation that his shoulder was ailing with a sterling 20-17 overtime win against the AFC West Champion San Diego Chargers. This win came in the first round of the playoffs and Pennington's numbers were impressive: 23-33 for 279 yards and two touchdowns. Pennington then faced the 15-1 Steelers at Pittsburgh. Despite the Jets offensive struggles and being in a 10-0 hole, the Jets defense and special teams rallied to score 17 unanswered points. However, Pennington and the Jets would see their season end with kicker Doug Brien missing two crucial game winning field goals. The Steelers would go on to win in overtime, the third overtime in a row for the Jets.Pennington underwent surgery on his right shoulder in Birmingham, Alabama on February 4, 2005. It was later revealed that he had suffered a substantial tear in the right rotator cuff, as well as a large bone spur on that shoulder.

Ok, this is off topic I know, but what the heck does PFT have against the Bills? They continually rip Ralph Wilson even though it turned out that he was dead on correct about the CBA. And now they act like the Bills have no business competing for the Wild Card even though they've been playing like one of the best teams in the league since early November. They're 5-2 in their last 7 games with the two losses being against Indy and SD by 1 and 3 points respectively (and they legitimately had chances to win both games). If the Bengals and the Jets both lose and the Bills win this week, that puts Buffalo in the driver's seat for the final WC spot. If they could manage a win against the Ravens Week 17 then the Bills would be in.

Explains how erratic he was during the game.

Palmer seemed to be under relentless pressure under the malgined o-line. How many injuries do they have on there.... like 3 starters or something? thats never good.

denver's d isnt going to be much easier, as a carson fantasy owner, im considering benching him for a healthy jason campbell and matt leinart

LT Andrew Whitworth (rookie) -- Levi Jones out since Week 6 after a knee scope. Active last week and may be back next week although still listed questionable.LG Eric Steinbach -- Healthy all season but has seen time at center.

C Eric Ghiaciuc -- Rich Braham out since the Cleveland game in Week 2. Ghiaciuc missed time during the Bal game but has been healthy.

RG Bobbie Andrews -- Missed a couple games after an appendectomy mid-season. Now back in the lineup.

RT Willie Anderson -- Been playing with a foot injury most of the season.

The Bengals have been trying to get Braham back on the field for a couple of weeks, but he had a setback two weeks ago. Whether he can get back this season remains in question. Jones is apparently close and could be back this week. Anderson has a long consecutive games streak going -- his MRI wasn't overly worrisome this week and he'll play.

The current group had been playing very well as a unit prior to this week and was the reason the Bengals thought they could get away with guys like Whitworth and Stacy Andrews (who filled in for Anderson) in thin protection schemes against Freeney and Mathis. Dumb decision that has contributed to a tougher playoff road and an injury to the franchise QB.

Big Miami and Denver fans this week! Bills have to take care of business though!
