Cat talk/advice - all meow, all the time (1 Viewer)

For you men, was getting a cat your idea or your wife’s? And for those with only cats, what led to that decision over getting a dog?

I just like cats. I've had a cat or cats for 20+ years. I like dogs too but have just had cats because situations have come where I end up with a cat.

We're thinking about going with a dog for our next pet, but we aren't ready yet. We also discussed the foster thing.

I got my first cat when I lived in an apartment and worked 10-12 hours shifts so dogs weren't an option

ETA- when my wife moved into my house with me she brought 2 dogs and 2 cats to go with the cat I had. Only one of those original pets (her cat) is still with us and we are up to 4 cats in total now

Thanks for the insight. Just wondered and I know people have different preferences. My allergies to cat hair made them a non starter for me. Then coupled with my disdain for litter boxes, owners who let their cats pounce on kitchen islands and put their whiskers in food, and finally the independence and general FU attitude of many cats just make them far down the list for me. But I get that there are 2 camps.

Easier to care for. Can be left on their own for a few days.
Like their independence and quirkiness. Cats can be very social or totally fine by themselves.
Not a fan of fur balls though.

This is exactly why cats are awesome!

Btw: This is Jaxson, our 11 yr old snow leopard bengal. Truth is…..I can’t believe he made it to another holiday as a yr ago, we thought that we had to say goodbye to him.

He was losing weight & not eating so we feared the worst & took him in to the vet. Initial lab work showed advanced signs of stomach cancer …..or possibly extreme IBS. Only way to confirm it was to undergo an invasive surgery….but with him already in a very declining health, we choose not to put him thru that & took him home so we could have a couple of days to say goodbye. 🥲. (The vet did give him a B12 & prednisone shot to make him more comfortable. )

Well, to make a long story a little shorter…it turns out that he slowly pulled thru that & has extreme IBS. Wasn’t a death sentence….but it does mean we have to give him a prednisone pill 💊each & every day & his system flares up really bad every other month.
He certainly has used up a couple of his 9 lives…..but I wanted to post the previous link for others to get a good laugh, but also to see anyone else had ever dealt with IBS in their cat 🐱 or dog 🐶??

We know prednisone isn’t great for long term use age, so it’s only a matter of time.

(And his IBS is triggered by stress…..so we really can’t have any more foster kittens in the house until further notice as he doesn’t do well when we have them. )

I really enjoy dogs. My BIL has a dog — great animal, super friendly, awesome to be around at our family cabin for a long weekend. And damn, dogs are so freaking demanding. Way way too much effort. I don’t want another toddler now that my kids are teenagers…..and yeah, having a dog is like having another toddler.

Cats are awesome. We have three now (long story), one that is 10 and a pair of siblings that are 1 1/2. All have different personalities, and we love them all. Zero regrets. I’ve had cats much of my life, and wouldn’t have it any other way. They leave us alone large chunks of the day, one of the three is “part dog” and thus super snuggly and friendly. He will lay on my chest for an hour if I let him. His sister is quirky and rides around on my shoulder for about 2-3 min at a clip, loves to sit in a wet sink, and plays fetch with various toys. But she also disappears for hours at a time. The old one is rarely around except for 1-2 hours in the morning and 1 hour before end of evening.

Cats can be left alone for days and days. No drama. Minimal effort from a sitter — who could literally be a 12 year-old neighbor stopping by 1x per day to feed them.

My wife and I are both unapologetically cat people. But again, we also both love dogs (in doses)……just can’t imagine owning one.

:goodposting: Dogs are too needy; I can't tolerate a pet incessantly following me around, and always begging for affection. And they can't be left alone for more than a few hours at a time. Plus, most of them smell bad, and some bark incessantly.

Really the only advantage of dogs is outdoor activity - they're great for walking, running, hiking, etc. Then again, when I do stuff outside, I'm not really a fan of working around other people's pets (or kids, for that matter).

I've had both cats and dogs as pets growing up, and my wife has brought up the idea of getting a dog someday. While I'm sure we could make it work, I'm much more content with a single cat, or maybe two.

ETA I think it may be partly an introvert vs. extrovert thing - cat people tend to be more introverted, and dog lovers the opposite, imo.

For you men.... Does anybody actually say "for you men" any more?

Love dogs. Love cats. Dogs have specific needs that living in the city in a smallish apartment we can't provide. Not going to get a dog and then put them in doggie day care all day or pay somebody else to take care of it with walks etc. Cats are equally awesome, and much less maintenance... Far better city pets.

Added 6 more to our wild cats.

I've mentioned before, we have a barn and field and woods. We're a regular spot for the Feral Cat Society folks to bring us cats they rescue.

They bring a pen and the cats and they have little styrofoam cat houses with straw, a litter box and food and water. You feed and water them and change the litter box for a month and then open the door and hope they stick around. They usually do.

We've had 12 come through over the years and 5 were still currently here. All 6 of the new ones have stayed so we're up to 11.

I can pet the OGs that have been here for a while when they are eating. But they're mostly wild.

So after 20+ years of cat ownership, we adopted a dog. She's a 5ish year old, 40 pound hound mix.

It's been so long since I had a dog I forgot what a difference it is from having a cat. We are absolutely loving it though.

So my wife gave one cat a bath yesterday (she smelled like litter box apparently my son hadn’t been keeping up on it)
Now our male cat is constantly growling at her (I think it’s supposed to be a growl he has really feminine sounding meows and whatnot)

Assuming it’s because she smells different and he thinks she’s an imposter or something and should subside in a few days but wondering if anyone else has ever experienced anything like this

Ugggg. I've had some issues with Uma this past 10 days or so, she's a Siamese. It started with some diarrhea and butt scooting, a really red irritated butt and weird litter box behavior. Vet gave her some probiotics and all her tests came back clean. A few days go by and she's getting better then she starts have tiny hershey squirts and laying down in the litter box. Back to urgent care vet. This time they did an x ray to make sure nothing in the abdomen or colon...once again clean results. A few days go by and her butt is now really red and starts to smell like ammonia.

Take her to my regular vet and they clean her up back there inject her with an anti-biotic and some other instructions. Things seemed to be improving over the last few days and then she had a seizure last night and it was devastating to watch. Luckily she's come back out of it and seems to be about 90% this morning. Still just a little off.

Waiting for the vet to call back to see if any of the meds could have possibly caused the seizure of this is an underlying symptom of something else going on with her that hasn't been diagnosed just yet. This sucks.

She's also been wearing the cone of shame some of the time...which also sucks.

:(

Oh, the joy of having cats. Our cats like to climb behind my home theater set up (where lots of wires and cables are connected). And they like to walk on my ottoman and end table where I keep my remotes. My wife needed me for something, I left the room for a few minutes, and when I came back, there was no sound. The cats were there just looking up and waging their tails. It took me an hour to problem solve. It turns out that one of them stepped on a remote and changed the input settings for the stereo. While that sounds like a simple thing to figure out, when you have multiple remotes, it’s not that easy sometimes. First I checked to see if the cables were all connected. I told them that if they told me which one did it, I would give the whistleblower extra treats for a week. No one spilled the dirt on who did it.

Anybody have experience with FORL? It’s a tooth problem in cats, for which they recommend extraction.

Our cat has it associated with one tooth. Doesn’t seem to bother her much, though I guess its hard to tell if cats are in pain.

I’m trying to decide if the risk of tooth extraction exceeds the potential benefits.

Looks like it's progressive. I'd do something earlier rather than later.

Yes. Happens to us all the time.
We have 3 cats & our local vet has an Annual Loyaty Program. For a 1x annual fee, it includes discounts on their vet appointments, but also includes 1 annual Bath & nail trim.
So we will take advantage of that bath.

When the cat who got bathed comes home, the other 2 cats will hiss for a couple of days. Happens every time!!!

It is with a very heavy heart 😢that i'm here to post the most devasting news.
Our family had to say goodbye to not 1......but 2 of our cats in the span of 3 days time.

JAXSON - He was our 12 yr old Snow Leopard Bengal
Such a Beautiful boy, w the most gorgeous blue eyes & the sweetest personality to go w/ it.
He was the most friendly & confident cat you would ever meet......He had no qualms about greeting new people, even workers that came into our house.
I was "His Human".........he would sit next to me to watch TV .......or come find me several times a day when he needed some attention.

2 yrs ago, he was diagnosed w/ extreme IBS (Previous Post about Jaxson).
We had to give him pills daily & constantly had to adjust his diet (it was Expensive!!!).......but it extended his life enough to where it was manageable most of the time.
Unfortunately, in the last mth, things started going downhill & he started losing weight & eventually we knew it was time to say goodbye to him late last wk.
That in itself was a devastating blow.

ZOEY - Unfortunately, it got worse............... we woke up on SUN morning to find 1 of other cats, our 18 yr old Siamese (Zoey) in the middle of a stroke.
As we started to leave for an Emergency vet, she took her last breath in the arms of my oldest daughter......luckily, she didn't suffer for very long & it was over rather quick.
Being 18, we knew this day would come sometime soon..........but just not prepared to have it happen almost back to back.

Needless to say, we are slowly getting thru this......trying to remember & cherish all of the joy & love that they brought to our family
We know there will be brighter days ahead.......I will even dare to say that sometime in the future, I don't know when, but we will try to foster some kittens again (our 8th group)

I think the point about dogs needing attention is spot on. We now have 5!!! Cats(sis in law moved in with her 2) That's a lot of darn cats, but they totally stay out of the way and if I feel like some cat time, I go grab one. One of the 5 likes to sit on my lap..but it's short and not intrusive at all.
Also have a dog, who I love tremendously. But he follows me everywhere....needs constant attention, gets uber jealous if my wife or I pay attention to a cat. Cat's don't care who you pay attention to. So even with 5 of the little ones running around, they aren't a hassle at all

We have one now and have had other cats who are clingy like your dog.

Our very first cat, Oscar, was my buddy. Big time. Cried like a baby when we had to put him down. He would lay on my lap all the time. Sometimes I would look down and be like "when did you jump up here" but he was like 8 pounds. My dog is 90 pounds. Very different

Sorry for your loses, @Nemesis. We lost 2 cats within 2 months and I thought that was tough, I can't imagine how hard it must be for you right now.

Hang in there. It does get easier, but it takes time.

It’s been a wk & we are slowly moving fwd as 1-cat family for now (thanks everyone 🙏). I still turn a corner in the house & expect to see them curled up in their usual spots but then reality hits me.

As I know most everyone in here has been thru this, I’m curious to find out:
1-How did you handle some of your pet’s last moments?
2-Did you elect to cremate? Bury?
3-Do you have a keepsake box of their ashes? ( or something similar)

We buried two different ones in our yard when we lived in the country. Placed generic markers down, which we left when we moved, which added to the landscape. So sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your losses, Nemesis.

1 - I cried. I was with most of the ones that were euthanized.
2 - All of the pets I've had as an adult were cremated, except one in college. One from college is buried. Someone was taking care of him when I was gone for spring break, and he got out. He was later found in the engine of a car, and it had killed him. I got a note when I returned home saying Opie had died, and how he died, and that they buried him near the Tar River. As you can imagine that was devastating. When I was young and before cremation was around for pets, the family pets were buried in the yard.
3 - I have a wooden box with a moon and stars on it, and five of my cats' ashes are in that. There are a couple toys in it too. It is full. Coleman is my most recent cat that died, and I was given a nice wooden box with his name on it by the cremation place. For now I've kept his ashes in that. They also gave me a plaster type thing with his paw print on it and his name. Anyway, when I'm cremated, all my pets' ashes can be combined with mine. Together fur-ever.

Just a little vent to my cat people. We have six (I know, I know), four of whom are 11+ years old. When we moved in August, we wanted to set up new vets for everyone so that we'd have someone in an emergency. We decided to start with the four oldsters, two at a time. So far:

1. Two are hyper-thryoid and now have twice-daily meds.
2. Two needed (and received) dental surgeries.
3. One has high blood pressure and now has once-daily meds for that (he's one of the hyper-thyroids, too).
4. One has pancreatitis, which has involved emergency vet visits and various meds and giving fluids.

I have no money left.

Hey everyone,
Here is the newest addition to our household that we just brought home. He is a 13 week old Lynx Point Siamese kitten & will become our daughter’s cat.

We didn’t foster him, but saw he was being fostered by someone else in our rescue group & had to meet him. So far so good
Omg

If he had come our way we would have absolutely kept that one. Beautiful!

And at this point, 20ish fosters later, I'm convinced that ANY kitten that's been fostered is going be an awesome cat, if just from regular early socializing with humans...and hopefully other cats. Those 3-7/8 weeks are vital, IMHO, as we've fostered older kittens who have all been ******** in some way or another (still awesome and cute). Every 3/4! week old we've looked after ends up being fantastic. And we're basically idiots, so I know it's not us specifically

Oh! I forgot the ECG we got for the high-blood-pressure, hyperthyroid cat last month because he had some value that looked weird and they thought he might have a heart problem. That came back clean, at least ($750 later).

I’ll see your $750…..and raise you to $5000

My daughter moved away 2 yrs ago & was eager to get a Bengal cat for herself. Well before we knew it she went out and found one & brought it home. Couple wks later she’s concerned about the new cats BUTTHOLE. Turns out….It is herniated…..which looks a lot like a red/raw “outie bellybutton “
It needs to be fixed with a surgery.
• Cats has 1st surgery with regular local vet. $
• Butthole not fixed
• Specialist vet called in for consultation
• Specialist vet performed 2nd more expensive surgery $. (Basically the herniated part is pushed back “in” and sewed to the abdomen wall)

Total bill was >$5000 😳
Good news is the 2nd surgery was a complete success & everything has been good to go since.

Make sure that bengal gets lot’s of attention, exercise, and playing. They need to almost be treated like a dog.

And post pics please. :)
