CBS Sportsline Scoring Error Cin. Vs. Pitt.? (1 Viewer)

Can somebody who saw the game confirm whether or not the Bengals blocked a field goal today? Sportsline is currently not scoring the Bengals D for one.

Here is what I found on the NFL.com play by play:

4-15-CIN30 (1:13) J.Reed 48 yard field goal is BLOCKED (J.Thornton), Center-G.Warren, Holder-C.Gardocki

Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a Honda.

The ball was deflected by John Thornton of the Bengals. I believe it landed in the end zone (although it could have been around the 5 yard line). The ball bounced through the end zone. I guess the only possible explanation is that this is considered a "tipped" ball instead of a full block. Think of a punt that gets deflected and goes 15 yards versus a punt that gets blocked directly down to the ground.

I know for a fact that Chris Gardocki of the Steelers has not had a punt "officially" blocked, but one last year was partially blocked or tipped and only went a few yards downfield. So there is precedence to a ball that is touched (as opposed to FULLY blocked) being ruled officially as NOT a block. The key to me is what determines an official blocked field goal. It could be that since the ball ended up through the end zone it is not considered a block. I don't know at all; just speculating.

I thought the rule was that deflected kicks don't count as blocks. To be a block, the ball can't go past teh line fo scrimmage.

You're thinking of blocked punts, not blocked FG.
I'm not sure why it cannot apply to both. Many times a ball has been deflected but still gone through the uprights on a FG or PAT. Surely they're not scored as blocked FGs, too, right?

I do know that when a kick is fully blocked and does not cross the line of scrimmage, the kicking team can advance the kick for a first down or touchdown -- or if it's 3rd down, simply recover it and move on to 4th down. So there is some ground for differentiating a blocked vs. deflected kick.

For what it's worth, this link from a Bears media guide shows the difference between a blocked field goal and a deflected field goal as being determined by whether or not the ball goes past the line of scrimmage.

For the purposes of fantasy football, perhaps both should count as blocks, but it looks like there is an "official" difference between the two terms.
